Yes, even those who have cruised before have questions:) ?
Has anyone ever participated in the classes you pay for in the gym like Pilates?
Actually it is Pilates I am interested in, I have always thought if I could take the classes I could at least learn some of the exercises with the help of someone teaching it rather than getting the video.
Are there any other classes offered you would recommend?

We took a yoga class on the Statendam a couple of years ago, and were very impressed with the instructor's knowledge. As we were the only three, we received very personalized instruction. My husband acheived an improvement in his posture that helped some of his back problems.
Last Nov, DH took an individual lesson in free weights, and also learned from that.
sorry, I can't help with the Pilates.

I signed up for the pilates pass or whatever they actually call it... I believe it was $33.00 for all of the Pilates Classes in the week (5?) I think I made it to three, because I didn't want to wake up early enough for the 9 am classes :) I really liked them! The instructor was great, and I could feel the difference in my abs after only that couple of hours...

Do they have private pilates lessons?

If you are new to Pilates, try not to overdue. You will definitely feel it.

I do a lot of floor exercise daily and I think a few I do are pilates style. I am hoping to learn the correct way and help to get toned. The last 2 cruises I got up at 6:15 every morning and was in the gym by 6:30 and spent an hour the first 5 mornings. I have given myself a break to sleep in the last two mornings.:)
I think one of the best parts of the cruise is being up in the gym, walking on the treadmill feeling good about exercising, seeing the sun rise as we are sailing into a new port. The views have been breath taking, those a truely NATURAL HIGHS:cool:

The classes are $11. You can also get a private Pilates lesson. We took the spinning classes last week on ZUI and they are a major workout but a lot of fun. We love going to the gym onboard. How else do you burn off all of those desserts?

This is what I don't understand - why walk on a tradmill when you can walk the deck, breathe the salt air and feel the breeze in your face (or at your back on the other side :) )? I do use a treadmill at home (it's convenient, especially when it's raining :o ) but I do prefer walking "outside" even here.
So what's the draw of the treadmill for you?

The treadmill is great, you get on it, do your program, you can always walk to stretch before or after the treadmill on the deck.........it is too hard and windy to walk/run the deck because of "slow-going-shufflers, or "buffet-stuffed cruise guests" or people who cannot stay to the right.....or stop and take pictures, block your way......or smoke while they are walking, or whatever else reason, they have all happened to me on numerous occasions and I don't need someones poor habits/mannerisms upsetting me on my cruise....I know I know--but hey, the cruise is all about me having fun, working out, and sunning....so I will stay on the treadmill or stationery bike....no hassles, no excuse me, while huffing or power walking....etc.....and I will walk to cool down or warm up outside on the deck...or a slow walk after eating the entire buffet--hehehehe
It is like walking, running, biking at home, you got dogs running at you, stoplights to stop for, people to walk/run/bike around........I just need my treadmill and I am happy....I have seen too many accidents on cruise ships with careless walkers, joggers etc...running into older/younger people, tripping, and or flipping them the bird and or making a scene because someone cut them off while they were "In the Zone", so I avoid "crowded" outside walking/jogging paths......am I wrong? NOPE.
STOP WALKING/JOGGING PATH RAGE! Chill out, if you wanna walk/jog, do it very early with others in the same group.....or very later or at a quiet time while the ship is in port etc....

Dave, I also walk the deck later in the day. When walking the deck you tend to have to watch where you are walking more than seeing the scenery. Plus the view keeps changing unless you actually stop to watch. On the treadmill I can speed up better and use the incline mode to get more of a work out and still watch everything straight ahead. Plus I can vary it my using the eliptical or bike. Plus not as many people see me in the gym in the morning. I am not nearly as beautiful first thing in the morning and those in the gym don't care.

Well, I'm not sure I "improve" as the day goes on :)
Still, you do make some good points...

I've always enjoyed the elbow bending classes offered in the Dolphin Bar. Tones me right up.... only downside is the darn automatic 15% gratuity they tack onto the class fee.. *S*
and no errant walkers or joggers to avoid...

You made the sun rise treadmill sound so inviting that I think I will do this on my cruise in Oct. Thanks for the great idea!:)

If you have never done Pilates before, you will CERTAINLY feel a difference in these exercises! I do a lot of yoga and ab work at the gym, but a Pilates class teaches you very quickly that you have more muscles in your abdominal region than you ever realized!
Pilates works all the muscles in your abs, hips, upper thighs, and (for some) lower back. It is a wonderful workout, and you can learn a lot. But trust me, even if you do lots of work now on stretching and toning, Pilates can be very different. Take a class, and treat yourself to a long steam or whirlpool immediately afterwards.
One major positive after my first class years ago: I found that my muscles were achey, but felt a LOT better if I tucked my abs in and held my body straighter....it made me look slimmer after one class, and showed me just how much it can improve posture and such.
In any case, I hope you have a wonderful time! And by the way, I admire your ambition, right now my exercise goal for my cruise includes such strenuous activities as getting out of bed to open the door for room service!:D
Take care,
Emmie

Thanks Emmie, I have said for the past 2 cruises that I planned to sign up for a Pilates class and never did. This time I really want to. I definitely like doing the steam room thing too so that sounds like a plan. Thanks:)

No but you may have to "avoid" some people who may have drank a little too much who stagger to the left and then to the right, just when you are getting ready to pass them. One time we tried to pass this very inebriated man who reeled right in front of us into the wall. He slurred, "must be these damn high waves" Of course the seas were calm. :D
Emmie:
For someone new to Pilates and more into Tybo type exercising, will they tell the beginers when to quit at the first class so we don't get too sore?
Lisa:
I can relate to your early morning beauty thing. Who wants to look good that time of the morning, only to have some of it slide off of your face (at least mine) after perspiring? Besides even though I haven't yet met you, it sound like you also have beauty on the inside. The good news is that when I have done a good workout, I feel so much better about myself, and a little less guilty about tackling one of those decadent desserts! :)
