We are going on the 14 night Alaska trip on the Amsterdam and it looks like we are getting rain most days. Here is my question? I have booked two active tours should I cancel them orbjust embrace getting wet?
The first one is in Ketchikan and it's the zip line trip and the second is in sitka and is a kyaking trip.
Both are costly but was looking forward to doing them with the boys. Just guess worried won't be so fun in the rain. I also got to ok from the dr because of the surgery I just had

This is a personal call. If weather is too bad and it is a ship's excursion, they will cancel it and refund your money. I always go prepare for rain in Alaska. Maybe others that have tried these excursions in the rain will respond. Have a wonderful cruise.

Rain gear is provided on all of them so think I am going to go for and make this the best trip ever no matter the weather. This may be crazy.

Doesn't the zip line supply rain gear if needed? Sorry it was sunny when I zipped. I'm not sure which one you're going on but all the ones I read the web pages said they have rain gear. They operate the zip line in rain unless of extreme wind conditions. I think I would be more concerned about reinjuring something I've recently had surgery on than getting wet in the rain. You can never predict the weather on the west coast. It can be nice and sunny and then 10 minutes later pouring rain.

My nearly twenty years growing up and living in the Pacific Northwest, including numerous visits to Alaska, led me to really dislike rain. :) Seemed to me that there were three weather conditions during the summer. One was sunny, beautiful clear days. I've lived all over the US and parts of the world and I don't know of any other area that can be that spectacular. Second condition was what sometimes felt like endless drizzle filled, gray days. This can wear on you to the point of bordering depression. You can be outside and if you live up there you've got the lightweight rain gear but it's not overly pleasant.:) Third it just outright downpours. Frog strangling, duck drowning downpours and you just stay inside. No amount of rain gear makes days like that acceptable. The first two obviously are workable for excursions. The third is not and hopefully the provider and the cruise line would agree to cancel those excursions that became unacceptable because of heavy, continuous rain. Really comes down to luck and mother nature.

HAL announced on our 14 day cruise that all tours would go regardless if it rains. The weather would have to be really bad for them to cancel tours. In 2008 the weather was so bad that all helicopter and float planes were cancelled due to low visiblity. This year we had tons of rain in Juneau -- only some of the helicopter flights were cancelled.
I have seen people out in the kayaks in the rain.

I am going unless it's deemed unsafe. Talked to tour companies and both have rain gear and so here we come.:)

We've done a kayaking excursion in Ketchikan. I would say for us it was more of a drizzle/fog than a rain, and we had a great time. They do supply rain gear, and we never felt wet.
But I've lived in the PNW most of my life and we learn early to adjust to life in the rain. :D

You could always go snorkeling and not worry about how wet you will get;)
DH took three teenage girls snorkeling in Ketchikan. Had a blast.

Weather in Alaska is unpredictable. :)
We had cold, wet rainy weather in Juneau yet bright sunny days in Sitka and Ketchikan - we were laying in the sun by the pool at both sailaways and came home with a sun tan. Think how disappointed you'd be if you canceled and the weather turned out perfect? I'd rather zip line in the rain than not at all.

IF it rains just remember this is the weather that locals, native people, and all the animals live with. This is after all, part of the greatest rainforest system on earth! You will have a great time.........and who knows, maybe the sun will shine! :D

I just got back from an Alaskan cruise on Sunday. Before I left the forecast was for rain every day. The only day it rained in 7 days was in Ketchikan. The rest were partly cloudy to sunny. The forecasters are just as accurate about our weather in Calgary:rolleyes:.

You see your glass as half empty ... try to see it as half full. :D No one can know how much rain you will get ... your trip does not start until July 8. We enjoyed beautiful weather for this cruise last month. Don't worry until you see that you're getting wet!

I'd wait until on the ship. The deadline for cancelling with a 90% refund is usually a day or two before the port. There will be a shore excursion booklet in your cabin and it will give the cancellation deadlines. This will allow you to make weather decisions a little closer to the excursion. Also, they sometimes don't the 10% cancellation if you cancel one excursion and book another especially if the new one is the same price or higher.

Aside from what everyone else has already said about the rain, my DH is a meteorologist and we live in the Pacific Northwest. He says to never trust a forecast for more that 5 days out.
Chances are it will will rain sometime during your cruise to Alaska, but at this time of the year, probably not all day every day for two weeks...that would be VERY unusual! I'm glad you're planning on going with the flow (so to speak:D)

I have rafted in the rain (not in Alaska but in Northern CA). I had a blast. Whether or not it is raining, you will get wet kayaking. Go and have fun. It's only rain.

Hi Lorene, glad you had good weather. Now it's our turn for Alaska. Don't you dare take the "good weather gods" home with you. Hope you left them in Alaska. Looking at the weather forcast for next week in Ketchikan it says rainy. So you guarantee good weather based on that prediction????
Hope you had a good time? I spot you posting every once and a while on HAL postings. Hope things are going well for you.

There must be a reason that Ketchikan measures its yearly rainfall in feet! :) We have been there in rain, clouds, and even some sun. All was wonderful. Any day in Alaska is a good day. We'll be back August 5th!

When we went to Alaska many years ago, I prepared for cool weather and rain. We had bright sunny days except for the last day on our Fairbanks extension. I could have worn shorts if I had brought any! One never knows. You might check weather.com before you leave.

This is after all, part of the greatest rainforest system on earth!
Greatest rainforest?? What happened to Brazil?
Just to set the record straight, the Pacific Northwest does have the greatest temperate rainforest, but the Amazon tropical rainforest is the world's greatest rainforest, followed by that of Central Africa. Sorry, Alaska.
