View Full Version : How many pairs of shoes do you bring???

Ok - ladies in particular, I need some input. My DH says I bring waaaay too much when we cruise, especially in the footwear department.

I have been sitting here eating my lunch and shoe shopping at Nordstrom's online (DH's fault, he asked me to order him another pair of his "same-old, same-old" favorite shoes) and before I knew it - I had 11 new pairs for our upcoming cruise in my shopping bag... yes, I know - it's a problem with me, however I am happy to report that I didn't end up ordering them...

How many is TOO many? I usually bring as follows:

2 pair black sandals for formal night (need two just in case one gets broken)
1 pair New Balance running shoes
2 - 3 pairs of flip flops/thongs (for the pool areas - and to match various colored swim attire)
1 pair nice flip flops to wear with shorts & capri's
2 pair of black nice mules/sandals to wear with slacks & skirts (informal night)
2 pair other colored mules or sandals for various other outfits
1 pair whatever shoes I decide to wear for traveling

So, basically I have about 10 pairs of shoes for a 10-day cruise... do you think that is too many?

For my DH, I usually pack about 5-6 pairs - but I can't seem to narrow it down for me.

Please tell me I am not alone here...

That's not too many. Lets see, I'll have:

black dress shoes
brown dress shoes
black sandles
brown sandles
waterproof sandles
walking shoes
hiking boots
black patent leather for formal night
maybe the cowboy boots, haven't decided
Probably more than most guys, I'd be interested in hearing.

This is a tough one for me also. It will be interesting to see what other people pack. I was trying to get my wardrobe together for our cruise on March 19th and I was also wondering how many shoes I needed. I do not have a problem packing alot of sandals, but those bulky new balance tennis shoes are going to give me a fit. I was thinking about wearing them to save from packing. Any suggestions on how to pack my new balance shoes?

ekerr and cru1s1ng,

Those shoe inventories are for your whole families, right?

(Otherwise you both must be centipedes.)

TedC - Those are just mine!

JaniceB - I'm thinking of wearing my NB this time... I hate leaving them at home, because I do like to "think" I will workout or walk the deck, but I hate having to pack them... but then, I will have to pack them for embarkation, so I don't know.

LOL, no, just for myself. What can I say? I change a lot. Sure I could go with black or brown dress shoes. Can't do without the patent leathers on formal night. Must have waterproof sandals and hiking books for the eco tours I plan on doing. :)

Isn't that what porters are for? I wouldn't want to put anyone out of a job. AA allows me 2 bags at 50lbs each + 1 45 lb carryon. I'm sure I'll use it. (Don't even get me started on clothes).

Way too many is right. Who cares if your flipflops match your swim suits. :)

I take one pair of black patent shoes - goes with everything I take for formal nights
1 pair Echo sandals for wearing during the day and even out to the pool
1 pair of dressy flats for informal nights
1 or 2 pairs of casual flats for casual nights

I wear my Rockports on the plane and for walking in the ports. Took my New Balance to Alaska because it was colder and more apt to run into rain there.

I have finally learned to cut down in the shoe dept. - wish I could do the same with clothes and "junk" that I take.

I remember the days when I took white, cream, navy and black dressy shoes - mind you in those days there were no casual nights, except first and last and even on the last night we dressed as tho it was an Informal night. We never wore pants in the evening - it was always a dress. I like it better the way it is now, - no more panty hose. :D

Janice - wear your New Balance on the plane - you'll probably be more comfortable.

This is the worst part of packing but in looking at what everyone else brings I feel pretty good. Shoe are so heavy in most cases and take up so much room in the luggage.

OK here's what I plan to pack this next week.

1 pair of black strappy dress sandals (hoping to get by also wearing these with a dark navy formal dress rather than bringing my navy dress shoes)

1 pair of white sandals

1 pair of black sandals

2 pairs of tennis shoes one for running on the treadmill and in the gym in the morning the other to wear out and about.

DH is lucky he only has 4 pairs, His Tux shoes (shiny patent) reg. black dress shoes and his sandals.

Oh my word ... 10 pair of shoes????
I take 3.

1 pair of black dress shoes
1 pair of casual shoes
1 pair of tennis shoes (good for shore excursions)

I I'm doing a lot of beach stuff I'll take a pair of flip-flops or Bierkenstocks.

But, then, I'm a guy. I understand that some women take bunches of shoes.

I bring about 8-9 pair.

I don't consider black patent to be formal....too casual for my taste. For formal nights, I wear either a black silk pump or black crepe/silk strappy sandal depending upon my formal wear.

New Balance walking shoes for treadmill/Promenade Deck fast walking;
Black Clark's sandal;
Light color (either white or taupe) Clark sandal;
Black Mule for Informal Outfits;
Another color Mule depending upon casual/informal clothes;
Low heeled pump or flat again depending upon my outfits.

The more careful I am about staying to two colors in my clothing, the fewer shoes I need to bring.

But sometimes I just HAVE to bring some outfit I particularly like even though I know the shoe I wear with it will not go with anything else I am bringing. ;)

I may not be able to afford my cruise if I go on their website right now! (I have very narrow feet, and Nordstrom is one of the few places I can find shoes that fit, so I have developed a serious infatuation with them!)

I would think that you could cut those shoes down somewhat. Have you ever had a sandal mishap? Could you, perhaps, bring neutral flip-flops for the pool? I ahve a friend who is a great packer, and she once spent two weeks in Paris with 4 pairs of shoes: sneakers, walking shoes, dress boots and pumps. I don't think I could live like that, but it is impressive to know it can be done! (And trust me, she is a fashion diva and knows how to dress, she got quite a few looks out of those 4 pairs of shoes!)

I think the key is to wear the clunkiest shoes on the plane, and then pack the rest in neutral colors so they go with multiple outfits. And prey there are no sandal saboteurs on board! ;)

List your outfits here, maybe we can help you coordinate!

Take care,
Emmie

Just 10 pairs for 10 days???? Nope, not enough, I took 12 on our last 10 day and usually about 9-10 for a 7 day, you never know what you are going to feel like wearing

Will never forget my first cruise soooo many years ago, one whole suitcase full of just shoes, I think 16 was the final count. DH still hasnt let me forget that, this from a man who wears onboard one pair of sneakers and packs one pair of dress shoes, 2 pairs for any length cruise, can you imagine??????? Men are soooo lucky!!!!

I try to keep my shoes down to a minimum as we have such long distances to travel and weight is so important.

I usually bring 5-6 pairs of shoes, including the ones I wear on the plane.

I always bring a black pair of strappy sandals for evening wear which will also go with my semi-formal wear. That eliminates bringing any other high heel shoes.

The rest are good walking shoes, Rockports and light shoes for hot days. I find I do not need to bring sandals as we do not go to places like the Caribbean. We tend to cruise to/around Europe.

My wardrobe and shoes were completely different when we went to Tahiti but then weight wasn't a problem as summer wear is so much lighter in weight and summer sandals are also lighter.

Well, I'm with Esme!!! Who the heck cares if your flip flops match your swimwear??!! No way can I cruise with any of you. I bring as few shoes as possible. When I plan my cruise wardrobe I plan around my shoes ... not the other way around. So I bring:

1 pair sneakers (forget the fancy ones)
3 pair dressy and semi-dressy and they're not even a tiny bit strappy but that's because I have foot difficulties.
1 pair "jelly" shoes for beach or swimming in funny places (doesn't really count)
2-3 pair of my favorite Naturalizer slider sandals

And that is it! If I brought all those shoes you're all talking about, I'd have to have an extra suitcase.

Oh, I hate it when that happens! You find some great outfit and debate over taking it because the shoes that go best with it will only be worn with that one outfit... talk about a dilemma.

Seriously, I am happy to see I don't really over do it (though it does seem that way when I am packing) - I know I can cut back a bit on this trip, but I do like to have a nice assortment of casual shoes and flip flops for around the pool and to wear with shorts.

Well I guess we don't travel much I have : 3 pair of sandles with heels, 1 without, 1 flip flop and just bought myself a new pair of keds. I will leave my old easy spirits at home. However, if I traveled as much as you all do, I could handle all those shoes. I work and fun time in sneaks most of the winter but love sandles in the summer. DH 1 nice shoes, 1 flip flop and 1 new sneaks. Hopefully, everyone will think we look nice and not check out the feet. 3/5 Zuiderdam Yea:)

I take one pair of black pumps for formal nights---all those outfits are based on black.
One pair of taupe pumps for the rest of the nights.
One pair of flip-flops for pool. They double as slippers.
One pair of taupe slip-ons that I wear to travel and every day.

This is for a 30+ day cruise.

The more I pack the more I would have to carry. I don't look like a pack horse. :D

For a 7 day cruise:
1 pair of tan flipflops (coordinates with any swimwear/coverup)
1 pair of water shoes
1 pair of Teevas (very comphy sandles) I wear these most of the time
1 pair white heels
1 pair black heels

Last year I also brought my english riding boots and wore jeans on the horseback ride in Belize. After nearly passing out from heat stroke, I'm just going to wear capris and teevas and try to make sure my feet don't get stepped on.

1.2. Why brown dress shoes? One black pair is more than enough for me!
3.4. I take one pair sandles - black or brown whichever is on top of the pile.
5. Same for me
6. My sandles are fine for walking.
7. Hiking? Isn't this a cruise :-)
8. 9. My Elvis days are over...

So...One pair dress shoes, one pair sandles, one pair flip-flops.
Actually, I would take one additional pair of casual shoes to give all the others a rest. Total of 4 pair :-)

Brown shoes look better with khakis, unless of course you're wearing a shirt that is mainly black IMHO. Same for sandles.

One of the excursions I'm taking is an eco hike. Sounds like a lot of climbing over rocks. As a former colorado resident, I take my hiking seriously.

I have flat feet so sandles don't cut it for long walks, so I take walking (comfy tennis shoes). I need them for my 2 miles a day also.

The patent leathers with the tux is just because they're pretty.

Boy Lisa, you have some tiny little feet! I love Nordstrom's and have shopped there for years. I was lucky enough to live close enough to the one at South Coast Plaza when we lived in Cali and I got hooked on it when I was very young.

We have a great one here - but I love to shop on www.nordstrom.com (http://www.nordstrom.com) during my lunch hour...

Wow, I guess I pack too light in the shoe department, I take 1 pr. formal shoes (works with both dresses), 1 pr. informal pumps (works with all outfits), 1pr. tennis shoes, 1 filp flops, 1 sandles and my slippers. Oh do those rubber water shoes count hehehehe. :) But I would take more depending on the lengh of the cruise but this works for me for our 7 day b2b's. Dh takes 1 shoe each for dress and casual, 1 pr. water shoes and 1pr slippers. He wears a plastic boot cast on his left leg, so only time he needs 2 shoes of the same is in the water or at night before bed hehehee so I get to take an extra free pr. of shoes right :)

Don't get me wrong! I love shoes, too. Zappos.com knows me personally and always sends my shoes out rush delivery for free (great spot for Naturalizer btw, Lisa). I recently counted and had 50 pair!!! I just don't pack them when I travel. They weigh too much and take up too much room.

And when was the last time you were walking about the ship especially on formal evenings and went up to someone and said ... "my what lovely shoes you're wearing!"

C'mon, admit it ... you do not notice other peoples shoes which is why I don't bother. No one is looking at my feet ... they're way too focused on my heavenly body:D .

As few as possible. I used to take many pairs full but realized I was the one having to lug them off airport carousels as my husband is disabled. On our last cruise (21 days) I really cut down and took only the bare necessities and really I didn't miss any that I had left at home. It's the shoes that weigh the most. I always try to make the weight of each suitcase similar. At one time the airlines would weigh all our suitcases together and as long as we were not overweight they were accepted. In San Diego in November, flying America West, one suitcase was about 5lbs over and others were under the max. Right at the gate, with other passengers waiting in line behind us, they made me open them up and take something from the overweight one and put it into one of the others. Luckily there was a pair of shoes handily packed at the front.

The airlines have gotten very strict. I checked American Airline and it has changed to 50 lbs each for 2 bags checked. Additional bags are charged 80 bucks. The loophole is you can also have a 45 lb carry-on. Sounds like that extra pair of shoes came in handy.

Well I am six feet tall as is my husband, so my shoes are as big as his. Believe me they take up a lot of room. I try and try to keep the numbers down because of that. Ten to twelve pair would certainly need a suitcase of their own. I often get along without my New Balance and use my sport sandals for many things, in the water, on shore and around the deck. They feel just about like tennis shoes. I take two pair of dress shoes and the rest are mainly sandals that don't take up as much room. I always have problems with the old shoe dilemma!

richnorto
March 1st, 2005, 11:23 PM
Ok, lets look at this reasonably. Flip flops and little sandals take up almost no room! They shouldn't count in the shoe count. Strappy heeled dress sandals only count 1/2 - they take 1/2 the room of a pair of normal shoes. If I wear my tennis shoes, I figure that only comes to packing 1 pair of shoes! Hah! I win!!:D

You can never carry to many shoes if you have the right amount for you! I LOVE shoes! They make me happy. My DH has stopped making fun of how many I take. I used to take one suitcase full of nothing but shoes. I have learned to scale down from that. But, for me when cruising, part of my joy is being able to wear clothes that I cannot wear at home and have the proper shoes to go with it. I did buy a pair of clear flipflops thinking they would go with bathing suits/coverups. Alas, when I purchased them it was a good thought. I still bring coordinating flip-flops to go with dressier bathing suit coverups. Guess it just gave me a good excuse to buy more shoes! I think on our last 11 night cruise I took about 10-12 pairs. I wore all but one pair of them--and didnt wear that one becasue we had room service for dinner one night. You never know what you might be in the mood to wear! Enjoy the cruise--and those shoes!

I bring as few as possible.

1 pair of flip flops
2 pairs of mule type sandals (can be worn with anything, except formal outfits)
2 pairs of heels for formal nights

Depending on what I wear on formal night, a 3rd pair of heels may be taken.

I wear either the flip flops or a pair of sandals on the plane.

Heather, I have to somewhat disagree with you on this one.

I got SUCH a horrible sunburn on the tops of my feet that I appeared formal night in my long velvet skirt, sparkly top, and black flip flops! I kept telling myself that no one could see my shoes under the dress... yes, I'm SURE that was the case... right??? Oh the heck with it - what choice did I have?!? LOLOL!!

For us, I base everything on formal night around black sandals, then I have black 'mule' type sandals, regular flat black sandals, blue sandals, and my sneaks. Husband has black dress shoes, deck shoes, sandals, and sneaks. That's it for him - 4 pair. He wears the Columbia deck shoes with khaki, because he agrees that black with khaki doesn't work unless the shirt is black.

My husband moans if I've got more than 4 pairs, including the pair I'm wearing! I'd never get away with 10 pairs! Good luck to you though if you can sneak them in.

Last cruise 9 pair...I can cut back...one pair wasn't used... I like choices...

I like choices as well. DD and I will have a suitcase full of shoes. DH hates it & has made me promise to cut down on the amount of stuff I take, so I'll just cut back on the "stuff" I bring for him or buy more stuff (shoes, sandals, flip flops in the islands. I can always mail a box home if I have too much coming back.

I try to keep it reasonable:

2 pairs of formal shoes
1 pair of sneakers
1 pair of flip flops
1 pair of walking sandals
2 pairs of slides which can be worn with capris/skirt/pants at non-formal dinners

I'll be wearing my sneakers to board the ship, so the others do not take up much room to pack.

This is my kind of packing.
But instead of tennis shoes I'll bring a pair of slingbacks Hillfiger sneakers.
Navy and white, very light and goes to most things.
And flip-flop of course.
The casual shoes is what ever I decide to travel in.

Have a nice shoe packing everyone.

Heather, I have to somewhat disagree with you on this one.

Three times, I have been asked about a certain pair of formal shoes. So I guess there are a couple of people out there that do look at shoes. Maybe they are the "Ultimate Fashion Police", that have genes similiar to those of Imelda Marcos !! :D

Well, this was my shock for the day, Gizmo! (...the disagreeing part:D ).

When you quoted me you left out the most important part of my post which was that no one is looking at my feet because they're so focused on my "heavenly body"!

So they simply aren't drawn to my feet:D . Besides, whether I'm dressed informally or formally, it's either pants or a very long dress. And I do frequently receive compliments ... just not on my shoes. I always say "draw the eye up"! The older you get the more you want to raise the eye!

Before I offend anyone ... I'm kidding!!!!:p

I try to keep it simple

1 pr metallic strappy heels for formal nights.
1 pr Nude/beige sandal for other nights.
1 pr flip flops/beach sandals that match the coverup
1 pr beige Birkenstocks for day/excursions. Also worn during air travel.
1 pr sneaks for the gym/walk a mile around the deck. Can also go on excursions.

I shocked my husband when my I took 1 suitcase for a 7 day cruise and it only weighed 42 pounds. I try to pack by this mantra - "No one else remembers what you wear. Only you remember what you wear." So if I have repeats of outfits, so what! Just change the jewelry....Now that's another packing story!!!

Who's kidding? That's a fashion rule for women of a certain age, isn't it? :D

This thread is too funny. But I have a story to tell that taught me a valuable lesson: when I was in college I went to France for 6 months. I got almost a new wardrobe for Christmas before I went. I packed all of my shoes and wore my snow boots because they wouldn't fit in the suitcases. You guessed it - Air France lost all of my luggage enroute and it was never recovered. I wore those snowboots for 4 weeks (I was a very poor student financially) until I was able to get funds from home to get some new shoes. (Clothes were my first priority).

Bottom line - you can make do with what you have. I did buy a terrific pair of sandals in Progresso last year because my sandals were giving me such bad blisters.

This trip I am bringing:

1 pair formal beige sandals
1 pair watershoes
1 pair tennis shoes
1 pair Sandals (bought in Progresso)
1 pair silver Ballet slippers
1 pair gold sandals

I think that's all. (No snowboots)

:p

Melissa -

I'm glad you brought that up. It's very important to me to make certain I never have all my shoes in the same suitcase.. another reason why I think I tend to rationalize bringing extras - what if they lose a bag??? I am sort of picky about my shoes and can't wear just any ol' thing, so I'd rather have a pair or two extra, than be short.

Heather - I am ROTLFOF! I think at my age I'd prefer people's eyes to be drawn to my feet!

Peaches, I was referring to my whole post (more specifically to the part about my heavenly body;) ) ... not really to the part about drawing the eye up.

EKerr, no ... up up up!!! Always up!:D Did you book the cruise yet???:D

10-12 pairs for me, but you have to remember the flip flops and sandals take up very little room. I would say 4 pairs of my sandles occupy the same room in a suit case as DH's size 12 dress shoes.

We been known to have an entire suit case dedicated just for shoes.

On our honeymoon we went to Acapulco and had to change planes in Mexico City. Once there for some reason we had to collect our luggage and recheck it. I believe we had 9 suit cases of various sizes. We live in DC, but got married in Florida had been been away for a month. We knew we were way over the limit and just decided to pay what ever they said we had to.

The Mexican officials didn't know what to do w/ us and our luggage - may be too much paperwork. In the end they let us go and just told us "not to come back to Mexico again." Twenty plus years later when we see people w/ too much luggage we joke that those people might be told not to come back again.

You mean you all wear shoes on a cruise????
(Red-neck response, couldn't resist;) )

In all honesty though, I bring tennies, 2-3 dress up sandals, a casual walking shoe and a pair of casual sandals....never realized I brought six pairs for 7 days!!!
(This from a girl who prefers barefoot whenever possible!) :)

I always take too many pairs of shoes, which ends up being about 8 pairs. This year I have vowed to cut back.

I will wear my sneakers, and pack:

flip flops for beach and pool
slippers for the cabin
navy blue sandals
black sandals
white sandals
3 pairs of black pumps, one leather, one patent leather and one sequened

Darn, I am still at 8 pairs of shoes and I am leaving my black silk shoes home, I always feel like I am in a wedding with those shoes. Gotta re-think this one. Here I was thinking I was doing so well!!!!

Ok folks, which other ones should I leave at home??????

Leave the slippers and navy blue sandals at home. The white ones will go with everything. ;)

Thanks Gizmo, I may leave my navy and black pairs at home and just wear the white ones, but I gotta take my slippers!!!!!!

Why not use your flip flops in place of slippers?

Now if it were JimV, I would never recommend leaving the slippers since he and his bwife bring a suite case full of animal slippers !!:D

I thought about it Gizmo, but I need my slippers. I am not crazy about flip flops, wearing them at the beach and pool area is enough, I like my slippers.

Somebody earlier on this thread said that you only count flip flops as 1/4 or 1/2 because they take up so little room. So count your shoes that way and it will be less that you planned. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

I've been very concerned lately about JimV, too. I'm sure some folks on here have his email. Hopefully someone will see all our posts of concern and try to find out if he's okay. It's been an awfully long time since he posted. The last post his profile shows was 12/21/04 when he wished everyone Happy Holidays.

Too long.
