We are so excited- we just booked the Volendam transcanal October 1. We need help in finding a hotel in San Francisco for a one or two night pre cruise stay. Is there a good mid priced hotel near the pier- or is there a better place to stay? Thanks for your help

Hotel York on Nob Hill, 3 blocks from Union Square. Very attractive, small botique hotel with rates around $100.00/nite (see their website). Part of Hitchcock's Vertigo was filmed there.

We like the Chancellor hotel (www.chancellorhotel.com (http://www.chancellorhotel.com)) It is reasonable priced at Union Square. The cable car stops right in front, and you can get anywhere in the City from there. Union Square is nice for shopping, and the theater district is right there if you have a desire to see a show.

Check it out...you'll like it!!

For Union Square, you can try the Hotel Monaco. Also a small botique chain. Small (but super cute) rooms...they even have goldfish on loan if you're missing your pet at home!

For Nob Hill...try the Mark Hopkins Inter-Continental. I know you can sometimes get GREAT deals there. But, Nob Hill is a little out of the way from things if you're planning on doing a lot of walking.

There are a couple decent hotels in Fisherman's Wharf...but can't think of the brands (all big brands...Hyatt, Marriott, etc.) Never stayed there as I much prefer Union Square.

If price is of no concern...splurge on the FOur Seasons...absolutely beautiful rooms. And The W is great too...just South of Market (SOMA) - hip area.

Hope this helps.

If price is no concern, you need to get the bridge to bridge suite in the Mandarin Oriental. Amazing views. It was wonderful lying in bed at night and looking out the window to see the top of the TransAmerica pyramid. You also get binoculars that give you a great view of the city.

I only stayed because I was able to get a half price night, and even that was outrageous, but it was a once in a lifetime thing.

Thanks for the help. We wern't sure what location to get in San Francisco. Looks like Union Square is a good location. Any ideas about taxi fare to the pier?

$5 - 10 (inc. tip) depending on the traffic...
