First cruise will be Sept. 21st on Nieuw Amsterdam to Mediterranean. We booked room VF/5136 at travel agency. Does this mean this is the room we will get or is there a chance of an upgrade?

If you did not book a guarantee, but a specific cabin, I would not expect an upgrade. If you booked a guarantee, (doesn't sound like it) then perhaps you have a chance of an upgrade.
Overall, the system of upgrades is a strictly kept industry secret, and nobody really knows if you are going to get an upgrade or not. The general rule is to book the level of cabin that you "need", don't expect an upgrade.

I agree with Bruce.
The chances of getting an upgrade when you have specially booked a certain cabin are very slim.

We would be happy to have you join our roll call. There are about 52 people signed up for the meet and greet and many are planning private shore excursions. Here is the link: http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=1241294
We look forward to meeting you.

Whenever we have booked a specific cabin, we have never had a 'free' upgrade. There is probably more chance of receiving a call for a 'paid' upsell. I think these offers are usually a good price, but you do have to decide for yourself if it is worth the increased price. When we book a specific cabin, we decide right away how much we are willing to spend for an upsell and what category we are willing to purchase. This will also sometimes be different depending on the itinerary and length of the cruise.
Hope you end up with the cabin of your dreams and enjoy your cruise.
