We are new to HAL and are trying to find a balcony cabin that will fit 2 adults and 2 school aged kids. There do seem to be some quads but I hate the idea of a bed above our heads! At least we would be on a port-intensive trip so not a ton of time in the room (10 day Baltics) I would love to hear anyone's thoughts. Thank you so much!!

The best? Probably a SA suite or the Penthouse. That would give you the most room, a second half bath (in the Penthouse), and a sleeper sofa.
If you want to make sure you have a fold out couch, the bigger the cabin the better.

The "SA" cabins hold four guests great. Many families of four take those cabins.

LOL - let me rephrase that - I don't mean "best" I mean "nice without having to raid the kids college funds". A balcony cabin is in our budget and possibly the deluxe suite but that would leave little for excursions . . .

My family of 4 (2 adults 2 small children) have done 2 cruises in the verandah cabins, they worked and we managed fine. Well, after doing some research for our family's next cruise we are trying the main deck J cabins for our cruise in January on the Nieuw Amsterdam (sister to Eurodam). Apparently, these inside J's and K's on the main deck are much larger than most cabins. Frankly, with kids in tow I willingly will give up a window/verandah to have another 80 sq ft of indoor living space.

We are a family of 4 (well, really 5, but the 5th is in a cabin with my parents :D) and we elected to do an inside cabin J category on the main deck because they are larger than any other cabins until you get to the suite category. I figured with 4 in a room we would appreciate the generous space more than we would appreciate the balcony. And it was *much* cheaper.
I know I've said it before, but it is really a shame they don't have any of the superior vernadah suites in a quad. Those would be ideal for families of 4 with the slightly bigger space. But there are none. If you have more than 3, you have to bump out to a Deluxe Verndah category.
ETA: If you do decide to look at the J cabins, don't mistake the "J" category cabins on any other deck with the ones on the main deck. The only ones that are big like that are the ones on the MAIN deck. The other J's are quite small.

We've done 10 HAL cruises in a quad - Ocean View. You will be amazed at how quick one bump on the head makes you remember about that bunk above yours!
In all seriousness, we're in the room so little, that it's fine. Not ideal, but very cost-effective. Your steward will raise it durign the day if you like or leave as-is.

Check out the VA aft cabins. The cabin is longer , a lot more room. Look at the center ones.

I say a J on the main deck, (make sure there is the sitting area)
OR
VD 4166/4168 with the 18ft balcony, just a great deal.

If you do end up in a cabin with a berth over the queen bed, consider asking the steward to make up that queen reversed from the normal setup. That is to say, have the "head" of the bed down where the feet usually go. At least you won't knock yourself out if you sit up quickly.

Thank you so much - now if I could only find a picture of a verandah room made up to sleep 4 people. NOT an easy thing to find out, I have discovered!
