I just got back from a Mexican Rivera cruise on Mercury. At every port we just negotiated with a tour driver once we got off the ship. We had great tours everytime!

My question, is this possible in the ports we will stop at on the Mediterranean cruise? I'd like to do it this way instead of pre-selecting all the tours. My husband and I are not interested in being in a bus lots of people. We'd rather tour with about 6 people.

Thanks!
Nancy

It depends on the port. In Rhodes, we found a taxi driver at the port who turned out to be excellent. ("American George" he is called because he went to school in Boston.) In Rome or Athens, there are limited private tour operators, and they will surely be booked already. I don't recall seeing taxi drivers waiting to pick up passengers for touring, but there could well be a few who will be scarfed up quickly. It will be a real crap shoot to wait until you get there in most ports, IMO.

Thanks! I appreciate you replying. I guess now I need to start looking into tours.
