Someone just e-mailed an article to me that appeared in the Catholic News Service. It was an interview by Fr. John Jamnicky who has Catholic Cruise chaplains listed with AOSUSA. This is true. The article claims that there were imposter priests or priests not in good standing doing Cruise Chaplaincies. This IS NOT TRUE on Holland America and it never was true on our line. First of all the priest contact person--there are two (one for Alaska and one for everyplace else)--and these people both require a letter from the Bishop stating that the priest is in good standing in his Diocese or relgious order. So, I don't any priests from Rent a Priest Dot Com would have ever served on a Holland Ship.

What has changed with the new program is that each year the priest must oblain a letter from his religious superior (in my case the Bishop) saying that the priest in good standing and that he gives his permission for the priest to do this.
In case that this topic comes up on these boards again, I want to be clear that the policy for guest chaplains on Holland America Line has always been such as to weed out those not in good standing. Holland Passengers need to know that all priests who have served have been priests in good standing.

As you probably were, I was horrified by the story from Princess' Hawaiian holiday cruise.

Every priest we've met on Holland was delightful and very people-oriented (as he should be).

Excuse the ignorance, but Is there really a "rent-a-priest.com" website?
The guy on the Island princess must have been from "rent-a-wreck".
Very tongue-in-cheek, thank you,
And I love your pseudonym,
It reminds me of my childhood friends from Boston (Irish).

There is such a web-site. These are inactive priests who have left the priesthood and active ministry to get married and they are looking for work as priests. If you go to that web-site and enter, you then click on your state and it will give you names and contact information for each of these guys.
As I say, Holland America has always sought a the CELEBRAT (Document saying a priest is in good standing) and now we are required to belong to AOSUSA and we have to get a letter from the Bishop giving permission.

Thank you Father Himself!

One of the reasons I book HAL is the opportunity to attend Mass everyday. It's reassuring to know that HAL chaplains are the real thing. The two chaplains I have met so far were absolutely wonderful, and real "people people" to all faiths.

That is what all chaplains on the HAL line should be.
