View Full Version : Odd Question - Temperature of Public Rooms

I saw on a website (someplace) that the "temperature of the public rooms tends to be cool". I'm sailing on the Amsterdam to Alaska in August. What do you wear to dinner, especially on formal night? I tend to be a bit "thin blooded", so I'm now wondering if even a long sleeved top will be enough...i.e., having to cover up my "dressy" ensemble so I don't freeze! Are layers needed, even inside? Thanks :)

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. It'll vary by ship, by time of year, by itinerary and even vary within the same ship. I've seen people report back that the dining room was frigid on the same cruise that others said it was sweltering. Since you will be in Alaska, you should plan on layering anyway so you should be prepared, no matter what.

If you are inclined to be cool, then a nice wrap would be in order. You may not need it, but it's better to have one just in case. It's hard to tell about the public rooms. I've never felt the dining room was too cool. Lounges and other areas can be either cool or warm, depending on how many people are there and if the sun is shining in at the time. I think layers are the order of the day for most any cruise.

I always take sweaters and hoodies with me. Also a shawl or two for the dressier occasions. I've always been cold in the public rooms on HAL ships [Zuiderdam and Oosterdam.]
I just tend to get cold ... like when it gets below 70 down here!

I'm with you; being from southern California, anything under 65 degrees is seriously chilly for me.
Thanks for the tips!

Blue fox, mink, sable, whatever is still legal to wear in Alaska.

In past cruises I have always complained about the frigid temps in the Dining Room and Showrooms. Our last three cruises on Zuidy, however, have been perfect. On the Maasdam, our DR Supervisor got me an extra tablecloth for my shoulders (big tip), and once when we dined with the Chief Engineer, he flipped out his cell phone and "ordered up" a little more A/C. I always take a dressy pashmina, just in case.
