On Friday, I ran into my neighbors who own a race horse. We started talking about the horse and when they thought she may run at Del Mar. Well, turns out the horse will run this coming Thursday 8/09. I was bummed because I could not go to Del mar that day to see the horse. I cannot go to Del Mar because I will be in Vegas most of this coming week and then it dawned on me; I can make a bet at the Sports Book at the Paris Hotel where I will be staying. I have never made a bet in a Sports Book so that may be fun. We shall see what happens. I will let you know.

Do have a great time on the canal cruise. Sounds like fun and since you are going, that tells me that you are healing well enough to go. Good for you. And you have the big cruise coming up next month. Take care and enjoy.

Sounds like fun Jo. Wish I didn't have to wait 50 days till my next venture. Might sneak in a little run to Atlantic City soon. They just opened a beautiful new hotel there that I must check out. Used to run down there every month at least. That was before we started cruising.

Some great pictures back from the Curiosity Mars rover. Amazing accomplishment. Here we put that vehicle the size of a car on Mars safely and in perfect condition. And Mary Lou was driving one of our cars on a street yesterday and she hit a curb and blew the tire. Good thing she didn't have to drive to Mars.

Long day at the hospital today volunteering. Started 10 hours ago with a disaster drill for the Emergency Dept. Pretty interesting how they handle all that. Also got to spend some time in the hospital next to where the helicopter takes off and lands. Amazing machines but I just cannot go on one. It'll be a 12 hour day before I head home. Golf tomorrow, Doctors appt on Friday, track on Saturday then down to Long Island for Sunday-Monday. Other than that , not much going on.

Went to the track today. I should have checked the entries before I went. I figured on a Saturday they would have a good lineup of horses. I left after the 5th race. Bad horses and a big rain storm after the 2nd race convinced me. Oh well, I have to get ready to go to Long Island tomorrow. Looks clear around here right now so Maybe I'll get to see a few meteorites.

And here is what happened in Vegas last week. First of all the high was 112 degrees and the low at night was 90. No, I was not outside very much at all. IT WAS HOT
Wednesday night while at Mandalay Bay, I went into the Sports Book there and asked for the Racing Form for Del Mar for Thursday. They gave me a huge book that not only contained Del Mar but also Monmouth Park and Sonoma County Fair. I do not even know where those tracks are. So I check the races for Del Mar and my neighbors horse is horse # 1 in the 6th race. But the race is 6 furlongs and the owner had told me not to bet her if the race was over 5 1/2 furlongs. She had just moved up in class and she had not raced in a longer race and he was afraid she might not do well. Following instructions, I did not bet on her. She went off at about 6-1 and won the race. She paid $15+ to win so I lost out big time. And i could have used the money since I lost the other 3 days in Vegas. I am just so happy for the owners as they are so exited about this big win. It was wonderful for them.
As Bob has stated, we finally do have our hot weather here. Going to the movie today to see Hope Springs and then to the pool. Enjoy the rest of your weekend all.

Too bad Ann about the horse. Nice price. One hit like that can make for a nice day. We're down on Long Island, my sister and I, visiting some family memebers. Of course I'll visit my twin Granddaughters tomorrow. Riley, one of the twins, told her sister the other day that she had suffered through 7 minutes of horror. She had to fold her Fathers underwear. I'm still wiping my eyes about that one. Tomorrow on the way back home we're going to swing by the new racino at Aqueduct Race track Supposed to be something. People are betting billions of dollars there. Had a great day on the golf links today.

Just back from Long Island. Had a great short visit with the twins. They are now trying out for the Cheerleader squad. Can't wait for that. Left their house to head home and went to the Racino in NYC. Yes, it's attached to Aqueduct racetrack and is huge. Unbelieveable number of machines. Nice brand new placew with ample parking and a nice atmosphere. But, I probably will not stop there again. I've been around gambling now for over 40 years and I have no idea what most of those machines paid off on. I finally saw the electronic crap table and headed over there. Threw my money in the machine and made my bets. Looked up and the machine was rolling 3 dice. I've seen that a couple times before from people that were cheating. Again I had no idea. Time to cash out and leave. I was ahead $15 and they will never get that back. The only other casino I've ever said that about was a Trump casino in Atlantic City but that's only because of what I think of the "Donald".

Somehow the 3rd di was for another bet on the board I guess. I've seen some people with dice up their sleeves that pop out when they roll but that's a different story all together. I always referred to craps as Pair-A-Dice and now there are three of 'em.

Well, I finally went to the doctor. Good thing I did as I have bronchitis. I now am on anti-biotics and an inhaler. I went to the ophthalmologist today due another problem. Found out that I had a blood vessel tear in my left eye that was creating what they call "floaters." Luckily, there was no detached retina. Doctor told me it should clear up within two weeks to two months. I also got a new prescription for my glasses. Hopefully nothing else will goo wrong.....

Bob,
So sorry to hear about your health issues. Yes, it was very good that you went to the Dr. Hope that means some time off especially in this heat.
Just got back from the Concert in the Park that we have every Wednesday night in July and August. What a glorious evening it was out there; not hot, not windy, just perfect. Great music and it is nice to see families out playing in the Park and friends enjoying each other. There are usually about 12 of us that go. Tonight we all brought food to share and had a feast. Great fun.

SHould hook you up with my son Jerry. He's a Respiratory Therapist. Don't take bronchitis lightly. It can be worse than Pneumonia. I picked him up at work today and he was 20 minutes late coming out. Well, for the first time in many months our furnace turned on last night. But that also means we're getting closer to our cruise. But then our dishwasher broke which was a big problem because we had some of our Grandkids over for dinner. Mary Lou has her work cut out for her.
Went out to dinner a couple nights ago with two couples that are some of our closests friends. I think I talked them into going on a 3 day cruise just to see what they are like. That should be a blast.
Mary Lou and two of her neices went up to our local ampitheater last night to see Toby Keith. THis time she took some cotton with her to plug her ears. She can almost hear this morning. Now she knows how I feel all the time. What?

At 9:50 AM, my air conditioning, which is set at 80, kicked on. Guess we are not getting cool weather for a while. It MAY cool off to about the 80's by the end of the week.
A 3 day cruise is a great one to start newbies on if they are not sure they will enjoy it. And after that, they will never want to stay home again.
How great to see Toby Keith. Bet it was a fantastic concert. Good for her.

Toby does a lot of patriotic songs which upsets some critics. Too bad.
You're right about the short cruises getting people hooked. We took Mary Lou's best friend and her husband on a short one last year because she was deathly afraid of water. Completely reversed. Hooked on them. Hard not to be.

Busy day today. Our monthly retirees get together to sit around and brag about being retired. Then off to 7 hours at the hospital. So maybe I'm not retired, just semi-retired. Either way is good.
Down to 37 days till our next cruise. Hope the Panama Canal is ready for us. Still working on the best way to surprise my friend who doesn't know we're on this cruise with them.

HI all!
I'm back from my little canal cruise which was really nice. I gained 4 lbs so food was good & plentiful.
I see you've been chatting up a storm while I was gone.:D
Grandpaul ~ it must be so rewarding for your son to have helped save the child's life.
Bob ~ hope you're feeling better & the floaters aren't bothering you.
Ann:cool: ~ I really like your cruise counter, where did you get it please?
I just started new therapy yesterday & it was pretty tiring! I'm not progressing as well as hoped so will now go 3 times a week ( & hope my insurance covers it!). I have to be walking better for my cruise in 37 or so more days!
Have a good day!

A cruise is a good incentive to do therapy. Good luck with that. It can be tiring but that's how you get better. Keep it up.

It has been so long since I have been on any ship other than Princess so what makes the NCL casinos better or ones that you prefer?
For me it's all in their crap tables. They let you play more odds on your bets and the more the better. The odds bet on a crap table is the only bet in a casino that is an even bet. And they are owned by the same people that own Harrahs so they throw free cruises our way every now and then. Maybe I'll earn another free cruise when I go to Harrahs in Vegas next month. Last NCL cruise I was on there were 400 people on board that got free cruises. Casino was a bit mobbed.

Hi Jo,
Welcome back. Wanted to give that site for the cruise counter http://www.cruise-ships.com/
You do have to join but it does not cost anything. The only bad part is that you have to choose all the ports you went to also and it is very time consuming, so i just listed the cruises and the ships. So it looks like I went on several cruises, but did not stop anywhere.
Hopefully you will be better by the time the next cruise comes around. Keep up the therapy.

Did not know that the NCL casinos were run by Harrahs. I do get many offers from Harrah's and just 2 weeks ago stayed for free for 3 nights at Paris in Vegas. But I have never been offered a cruise. Maybe if I went on one of their cruises and used my Harrah's card, I could get a free cruise. Thanks for the info, it was very interesting.

Bob,
Looks like in about 5 weeks, you are going to be the only one on dry land.
I will be gone on September 26th and Jo and Grandpaul are leaving on the 28th and 29th.
We will probably all be on line at one time or another but I know you will not be lonely as you are on other threads too.

Definitely a good deal for the lake regarding water. Flash floods can be very dangerous though. We also got a little break in the weather. Not as bad as Texas was earlier, but we did 23 days in a row with 100+ degree temps.....:D:D:D

I see Vegas did have some problems with the flash flooding. I've been there a couple times when that has happened. Amazing. You could see the drainage tunnels under the hotels just teaming with water. Not a good place to go swimming. Should help the lake a little bit though.

Years ago there would be whole parking lots under water when they had not properly prepared for flash flooding in that area. Wish the rain would have made it about 250 miles more to the west and dropped some on us. there has been some rain in the local mountains but not here in the flat lands.

On the threads for your upcoming cruises, has anyone said they would organize a Meet and Greet and a Slot Pull? We are having both on my Hawaiian cruise and I am in charge of both of them. On another thread, I have been sharing the simple but effective spreadsheet that I made up to use for the Slot Pull. They are always fun and I have about 70 people for the M & G and 60 for the Slot Pull.

I've organized a few M&G's but never a slot pull. One thing to do though is use your casino card in the machine used for the slot pull so you get the casino credits. Not a lot of them but whatever will help.
Guess I am going to the Travers Stakes tomorrow. Mixing up with 40,000 people thay are expecting. Mary Lou is heading to Florida with her twin Saturday. Of course, that's bad news for Florida with the hurricane coming. Last year when they did this trip they caused that earthquake in Virginia that shook the whole east coast. Imagine a hurricane and eaarthquake at the same time?
35 days till we board in San Francisco. 32 till Vegas. Maybe I'll have such a hot roll I will miss the cruise.

Well they already started a part two r/c thread for the Royal cruise. I also noted that other large r/c's are also being stopped. Seems like anything approaching 6K is fair game. Course when the part 2 thread started yesterday many of the posts were from the "Cruise Only" related posters. I just wish everyone would stop posting whether there for or against cruise only related posting. I personally post about anything and everything. Sometimes I get a little tweaked when someone takes issues with my zest for posting. I honestly can't figure out why they can't just block me or scroll by instead of stirring the post with their divisive posts.

there has been one issue that was brought up on another thread about using your casino card. . . .what IF you happened to hit the really BIG JACKPOT? the person whose card is in the machine will be responsible for the taxes. Guess that has to be understood in advance; before anyone gets paid their portion of the winnings, the taxes are taken out and given to the person who has to claim them on their income tax statement. Do not think I am going to worry too much about that happening.
Hope you win at the track and it is not too crowded.
You can have a hot roll in Vegas but for sure you cannot miss the cruise.

We didn't stay long as it was approaching 90 & very draining.
BTW I entered my info for the ticker you told me about & was surprised they wanted the exact dates of the cruises, I had to improvise as I only wrote down the months.

As I mentioned I left the track real early. The crowd was 45000. Just a bit noisy. The last thing I did before I left was make a big bet to win on the Travers, the biggest race of the meet and I would watch it at home. Race started and my horse was about 2nd to 3rd all the way around. Down the stretch they came and my horse made a move on th eleader. Talk about close. I thought my horse won but then the slow motion replay made it look sort of the other way. Usually I'm prtty good at deciding who won. After a few minutes on the TV show I heard the crowd roar. The race was a dead heat. Whew. I thought I was going to relax when I got home. Now I have to go back to the track to cash my ticket.
Bob, I checked on that cruise and it looks like it is sold out. Of course, I can't make decisions with the Front Office in Florida.

Just came back from taking 2 of my Granddaughters fishing. Good thing they both caught something. Perfect weather and will be for the next week or so. That's good because Saratoga track is having it's final day on Labor Day. Should be a busy weekend.

Mary Lou is staying at her twins sister's house down in Florida. The house comes with an a alarm system that monitors bad weather. The alarm has gone off twice since they arrived there and neither one woke up. Just a little tired.

Wish that I could sleep like that. I do love the rolling of the ship and can sleep better at sea than at home.

I always thought a bed that could simulate the motion of a ship would be a great thing to have. I believe I used to have one like that back in my drinking days but I must have got rid of it when I quit.

I don't think it would be that hard to build but it would be a bit expensive. Might be a bit noisey too. But I would buy one.
Went to the horse races today and it was a perfect day weatherwise. Not perfect handicapping though. Stopped at the racino on the way home and was down a few bucks and stopped at one last machine, a penny machine. Played the maximum coins and I heard bells ringing etc. I won $322 on a penny machine. On a dollar machine that would be 32 thousand dollars. Of course I wouldn't be betting 400 dollars on a dollar machine like the 400 pennies I was on the penny machine. Ended up a few bucks ahead for the day.

Funny story I forgot to tell about the fishing trip with the Granddaughters. On the way to the lake their Father turned on the car radio to a station that plays kids music. The 5 year old, Daniella, asked me if I ever heard that song they were playing before. I said I didn't. She told me it was from a show on television, then came the funny part. She said "It's an animated reality show". I had to think about that for a few miles.

Fantastic win on the penny machine. Do not know if I related this or not but several weeks ago when I was in Vegas at the Paris Hotel, a lady sat down next to me. She put in a ticket for $1.14 and I thought she must going to be putting in money too. No, she started playing and hit 1 line, 1 penny. And she was winning but only betting one line. When I finally left, she had $1.16. She really took the meaning of a "penny machine" seriously.
This weekend a friend and I are going shopping at the Desert Outlet Mall and will stop at a local casino also. Hope we win ! ! ! !

had another good day att he track today. Best meet I've had in years. Nothing comes easy though. Had one horse who won by about 8 lengths. Man this is easy. All of a sudden the "Objection " light came on against my horse. But they kept him up as the winner. Final day is Monday so I have to get at least one more day in. Mary Lou and her twin, Gerry, went out on one of the gambling boats down in Florida and had a wonderful time. She's telling me how cheap the houses are down there. Wonder why she's doing that? And they have year round horse racing right near her. Hmmmmmmm.

I like snow. I really enjoy skiing. And living in Florida I would have to head back up here for the summer anyway. Plus I really don't find Florida very attractive. Flat and boring. Yeah the beaches are nice. New York is a beautiful state no matter where you go in it. I do like the price of gas in Florida though.

I enjoy those Meet&Greets and was concerned we might not have one or two. Perfect weather here today but looks a little stormy the next few days. Closing day at the track today but I decided I didn't want to go. I'm ahead for the meet and don't want to give it back. Getting smart in my old age. Or cheap.

May be a very smart decision.
On Saturday when I wen to the outlet mall and then to the casino, I did not do bad. It was amazing that for the first 3 hours I played all kinds of slots and only lost $40. Then I found my favorite - Ultimate X Poker, at one of the bars and totally blew mucho $ $ $ $ $ . I have to try to keep away from that game but I will state that it has been VERY good to me in the past. But that is gambling; some days the machine is in your favor and other days, it is not.
Our M & G for this coming cruise is fairly active with only about 40 people on it. but I think we are going to have a great Slot Pull as about 60 have signed up for that.

The little rain that we had today did help some what on the fire but still a great deal more rain would be needed to put the fire out completely. There is a prediction of some more rain tomorrow but not sure it is in the area of the fire. The fire is burning in canyons and so difficult to fight or even do water drops from planes due to the terrain.

We tug boats around. Actually, what we have here is where the Erie Canal runs into the Hudson River. Used to be a hugh shipping lane where tugboats were used all the time. It's in a town called Waterford. So for years they been having a celebration dedicated to all those tug boats. They still use them quite a bit. In fact last year when Hurricane Irene decided to come right up the Hudson River the tugs were very important for the barges etc that were stuck here. They have a big town festival with entertainment, craft shows and a bunch of tugboats on display for tours. When we first started cruising you couldn't get the ships out of the harbors without tugboats. Now they all have thrusters so they aren't needed anymore. Big cost savings.

I remember doin gmy countdown. The retirement countdown is even slower than a cruise countdown. But after you retire it really goes fast. I've been retired just a couple weeks short of 12 years. Can't believe it. You're going to love it Bob.
In 24 days it will be 4 years when we left on this cruise. Speaking of time going fast.
Wow, four years already. Seems like only yesterday.....:):):)

That does seem amazing that it was 4 years ago as I can still remember so much of that cruise. What a great time, great people and fantastic ship and itinerary. Wish I could repeat it again in the near future. Did not see enough of Venice.

Yeah, I think we saw enough of Venice. Not enough of the rest of Italy though. Great country to tour. Great night for a ball game tonight but we lost 5-2. Sets up the tie breaker tomorrow night. I'll have to listen to it from the hospital.

Caught the last few innings of our local pro baseball team playoffs 3rd and deciding game last night. I walked in at the end of the 6th inning and it was 5-5. We won 16-7. Now the finals start tonight.
Went out early this morning and had to go back into my house and get a jacket. Hadn't done that since April I believe. Just means our cruise is clsoer I guess. 339 hours till we leave. Tick tock Bob. LOL.

Aha. In April we sail on the NCL Breakaways maiden voyage from London to NYC. Spend a few days touring London before. Haven't been there. GOing to use a touring company rather than on our own. They then drive us to Southhampton on cruise day which is about an hour south of London. Hope it's unseasonably warm then.

Under 300 hours till we leave for Vegas. Well, looks like the recent earthquake in Costa Rica isn't going to effect our cruise. Now I understand there is a hurricane that might come up the Baja Penn. Should be out of the way before we get there.
I'll be checking in online while away. Got to keep an eye on all of you.
Last night I was doing some research on London and the surrounding areas. I was always interested in the Titanic story. Our ship for our cruise is leaving from Southampton which is where the Titanic left from. Hope global warming melts all the icebergs before we leave. Anyway, I found out there is a Titanic museum in Southampton. Over 500 crewmembers lived in Southampton. Back in 2009 they had a guest speaker at the museum. She was the last survivor of the sinking. She was 97 years old. She was a little baby that was put in one of the lifeboats with her Mother. Would have been an interesting speech. I'll have to check that museum out before boarding our ship. Sounds like an accident waiting to happen doesn't it?

I'm interested in that story too so when I got my PVR in April I taped a LOT of shows about the Titanic, most of which I haven't watched yet.
When our ship calls at Halifax Pat & I are taking the "Titanic - The Halifax Connection" tour, which should be very interesting. There's a museum with an original deck chair
plus the cemetery where 100+ victims are buried.
Have a nice day!

Last year we left Southampton for our cruise up the coast of Norway. Some of us had bought the pre-cruise package with Princess and were driven the 1 1/2 hours to the port. We had no time at all to look around the town unfortunately. Some of my friends flew directly to London and the bussed down to Southampton and also had no time at all to look around.
Hope that you are able to schedule some time there as it looked like a great town.
And yes, you are so right; Vegas got hammered with rain earlier this week and in some areas her in the foothills and mountain areas, we have had flash flooding too.

We're spending a couple days in London using a tour company. Then on the morning of the cruise theyre taking us to Southampton. The ship leaves at 4 PM so I'm hoping I have till around 2 PM on that day to maybe check out that museum. I figure a car is a lot faster than a bus. I'll ask the tour company.

This AM when the streets were open again, off to go shopping and general running around errands. Just got home and I knew it was hot outside but just looked at the Weather Station for my town and now shows 106 degrees. I am making some calls to friends and we will meet at the pool very soon. Had an interesting day today. I'm a bachelor for the weekend babysitting our beloved Misha as Holli is visiting her sister. She's actually at the Dodger game right now. I'm watching the game on television trying to spot her. At 0630 this morning, I called work to see what time I started my night shift overtime. Much to my surprise, the Watch Sergeant told me I was scheduled for overtime on day shift and I was actually thirty minutes late. After a hurried shower, I got to work and changed my hours from 0700-1500. I was quite busy as I handled numerous calls for service. I ended up with six reports to write at the end of my shift. I had to finish one and took the other five home to write.
Thank goodness for the six pack of Sierra Nevada I picked up. It's making the report writing more managable.....:D:):D

Brunch at Knott's Berry Farm was great. Had pictures taken twice with Snoopy. That outfit that the person wears is so big, so heavy and they have to be sweating like crazy when it is 100 degrees here.
Since Paul posted, so will I . . . . 111 hours until we leave for the ship! ! ! ! ! !
On our cruise which leaves in a matter of days, Princess is still moving people around and giving them "upgrades" some of which I would not consider an upgrade. And I think there may still be some cabins left. For anyone in the LA area, they can probably get a great reduced fare right now.
Happy packing to Jo and Grandpaul.

Working the hospital every day this week and Saturday we're going down to Long Island to see the twins, and their parents I guess. The twins spent all day Saturday at a science museum in NYC and Riley got on the phone last night and was trying to explain how big the Universe is. I'll have to tell Steven Hawking about that when I get home Saturday night. He could learn a lot from Riley.

Your hospital "volunteer" work is a great deal more than mine. We only have to commit to work 8 hours a month. You seem to be thee all the time. But you have said that you do enjoy it. Your hours make it more of a real job.
Tick, tock. . .the hours are flying by.

Makes the time go faster and I really do love the work there. And it seems like every week I know at least one of the patients in there so I can visit them and brag about my cruising. LOL. In fact I'm heading there right now.

I also get to spend some time wit my son, Jerry, who is a Respiratory Therapist there. He shows me the newborn babies a lot. Nothing like 40-50 screaming babies. Actually they are pretty calm. As mentioned earlier I visited someone I know tonight. She was in a car and the person driving it had a fatal heart attack while driving. How scary is that? Looks like she's going to be okay. The passenger I mean.

Just went under 150 hours till we leave for Bright Light City as Elvis called it.
Last night at the hospital a wife came to the desk with a gadget in here hand. She said her husband had no voice box and she had a device he used for talking. He needed it down in the recovery room. So I took it down there, found the patient sitting in a bed and gave him the device. I took about 3 steps away and heard a very mechanical "Thank you very much". Amazing the things you take for granted. For the next hour everytime I said something I listened to my voice and was thankful.

I always tell the parents that Paul is a wonderful name. Don't know if they listen to me or not. Off to the hospital again. I was talking to my son and he said the most interesting place to work is the Emergency Dept. I'd love to do that too but with my hearing it wouldn't work out too good. "What Doctor"?
