I am sure I read it somewhere at some stage in the past few months but hubby has just asked me how many bottles of wine we can take on board in Rome when embarking on our 20 day cruise.

We are going to be in Tuscany for a week before we sail and I can see his mind ticking over!!!!! Thanks in advance for your help!

Gee ironin! I am not sure I will actually tell him that lol. does that mean we can take on board and drink more than two each? Am sure I heard it was only 2 each. But then again it will be less expensive to take it on board but too expensive to carry all the way back to NZ.

Hi skydancing,

As stated by ironin, you may bring on board as much wine as you wish.
Take a case on board at each port if you wish:)

Remember that if you take a bottle to the dining room you will be charged the $18.00 corkage fee.

It's not too long now until you leave these shores for Europe.
Have a great holiday and cruise.

You will have a great opportunity to sample lots of Italian wines.

It may be worth packing a corkscrew in your checked luggage, as they may not use screw tops to seal the bottles.

You can also take bottles of wine to the bars and lounges -- again -- $18 per bottle corkage fee.

Echoing Ironin and just want to add - you can also bring all the wine, water or soda you want at any port as well for consumption in your stateroom.:) HAL's policy is fabulous:):)

Not to highjack the thread but seems a good place to ask a quick (kinda) related question! .. what about beer?

I love collecting and trying all different types of local beer and bringing some home with me to share and taste with my father. Now I can imagine it is allowed to bring beer on board, but can I keep it with me and enjoy one on the balcony as well :D?

Sorry - it's only wine, water and soda you can bring on board for consumption in your cabin. Beer is not included in the list. HAL does have a fairly good selection though and you can order 'buckets' of beer if you so desire.;)

Here is your link for your roll call - there seem to be two - one for the 60 day beginning January 4 and one for the 30 day.

Had the same question for our recent cruise to Bermuda. I called direct. I asked: "How much wine can someone bring?" "As much as you can fit in your room and still walk." They supposedly have people with dollies of wine. We took the equivalent of 15 bottles: Several boxes and several bottles.

Who knew?

Related question from a first-time HAL cruiser --

Is only water and soda allowed? What about other mixers -- like juice -- in bottles? We use low-sodium tomato juice or V-8 for DH's Bloody Marys. I was planning to carry on a 46-oz bottle for his evening cocktail. This is a US departure, so I'd just buy it before embarkation. (We'll purchase the vodka from HAL.)

Any issues, other than being (physically) able to carry it on?

Linda;)

Does anyone know why beer is not included along with wine, champagne, soda & water that may be brought onboard at embarkation!

My DH has the same question concerning beer - he thinks it is discrimination against beer drinkers :)

I drink wine and I'm happy to learn that I can carry as much wine as I want on board! I don't remember being allowed to do that when we sailed with HAL before, but I could have just missed it. Is this new?

That really is a shame, but I will say this ... since we are doing the Baltics cruise I am definately going to try and pick up a few bottles of local beer here and there ... so watch this space and see how I get on!

Will report back mid September :D

you should buy the best ones as they would cost over $100 at home. I suggest Brunello, Gattinara and Barbera for reds.

I was on the Prinsendam South American Grand Voyage This winter and I and several other people bought beer at different ports and brought it on board with no problem. I have not tried it in Ft Lauderdale but I did bring 2 cases of wine on board, shipped it as baggage on Southwest so it went free. Just be sure to pack it in those shipping cases that the California wineries ship it in. I do not know if the cases at the liquor store would provide enough protection, I have shipped wine on airplanes as baggage 3 times without incident. Once, I convinced my wife that I needed to pack an expensive bottle from France in her suitcase, when the bag arrived at the claim area it was soaked with wine , she was mad at me until we got home and found out the broken wine bottle was from someone else's baggage.

I bought wine along the cruise route, Nero d' Alba in Sicily, Primitivo (Zinfandel) in Naples, the white wine from Santorini is quite good, Monte Carlo etc have good French wines for sale in the port stores and in town. Port wine in Portugal is a buy, Spain has good reds, even Croatia had something to offer. Bought a bottle of local wine in the Azores that was terrible.

Did you hide the beer or just walk on board with it?

Did you hide the beer or just walk on board with it?How would you hide it? One bottle in each pocket? Anything going through the scanner is seen. It all depends on how security at the gangway feels on a given day whether beer will be overlooked at a port or not. I've heard of many people openly bringing on local beer at AK ports with no problem ... but don't be surprised if they do insist on taking it and holding it. :)

Frankly, I think most of us can do without hearing how you broke HAL's most generous rule about alcohol. :o

Have a great Baltic cruise, and be sure to try some smoked Herring with your beer!! (Golden Bornholms preferably.)

Not me... I am looking forward to hearing how it goes. However, I don't like the idea of sneaking beer on board and hope that HAL will update their rules to include beer with wine. Or, they could start selling local (to the cruise location) or craft beer instead of the Bud,Miller, Coors stuff.

Or, they could start selling local (to the cruise location) or craft beer instead of the Bud,Miller, Coors stuff. They already do to some degree. In AK there's Alaskan Amber on most if not all cruises, and we had some good Rostock beer on board in Warnemunde Germany. I think we've had other local beers on board but that's all I remember right now. HAL could do a lot more of that.

Generally, on board DH drinks Grolsch.

Totally agree Carol - they had some really unique ones on our Baltic cruise (they were good and I'm not a beer drinker traditionally, but you always have to taste culture). And they did in South America too.

Really enjoy it when HAL does this type of thing:D

I don't think anyone has answered this. My understanding is that mixers and juices would be fine, just like soda.

Thank you for following up on this, readytocruiseagain and catl331. I had thought it was probably okay, but it doesn't hurt to ask. (Then again, I know some who are of the persuasion that "it's easier to beg forgiveness than ask permission"...:D)
