Have to share this with everyone....

As the story goes, my jacket (or sport coat) vanished from my stool in the Northern Lights. Went to the head, and upon my return, my jacket was gone! ... vanished without a trace, left the scene, etc... you get the picture.

I'm thinking it slid off the stool and fell on the deck.
(the stools in NL are comfy, but kinda low in the back, so take care in watching your items hanging from them)

After asking everyone and his brother, no one could locate it.
Ran into James Deering before debarking. The man performs miracles! He located my jacket in Seattle, and it's now safe and sound in my closet.

I am amazed with his help, and persistance in finding my lost article. Holland America Line has gained an excellent asset in all perspectives for this man 'who goes the extra mile'

Thanks to James, Jeroen, Adam, Pam (for her hospitality for the VIP party, even tho I crashed it!)Melissa, and last but not least.... ok, 'least' :)

Jason..... he should try out for "Last Comic Standing"
... (and he'll win!)

This was a great sailing .... and I'll be back!

Having had previous experience with James Deering when he was HM on several NCL ships, I'm not at all surprised that he "went the extra mile" to assist you. He is passionate about what he does and truly believes that it's all about customer service. He shares this passion with his entire staff and is a true team builder.

Glad that your jacket is now hanging safely in your closet - how long before it's hanging in a shipboard closet!:)

Congrats! I hope I have the same luck..I gave them my favorite dressy black pants to be pressed and never saw them again! They believe they were delivered to wrong cabin. We've been home for 2 weeks now and they haven't turned up yet..I loved those pants. I filled out a form that had their value..Do they just issue me a check for the value if they don't turn up?

It's always so easy to post complaints and disappointments. It's nice to see when someone takes the time to post a positive.

Kudos to both Mr. Deering for his efforts and to Vic for letting us know.

We met him last year on the NCL Sky Panama Canal cruise. He was very professional and tried his darndest to make up for the many service problems while the American crew were being trained. We received many "perks" for being guinea pigs.
What ship is Mr. Deering on? We are going on the Maasdam July 16 r.t. Boston for 35 days and would very much like to meet up with him again.

Happy sailing,
the Playfords

We met James Deering when we sailed in Hawaii on the NCL Star and of all the cruises we've taken...he is the only HM that I can recall by name because he was 'so available' to speak to or see around the ship. Everything the pax tell you about how he 'goes above and beyond' is true. Any ship that he serves on is the better for it! The beautiful MS Oosterdam and her pax are so fortunate! I think he is becoming 'almost legendary' in the cruising world!
Happy sailing!

Deering is serving as a "Floater" around the Line, taking duty on various ships to cover for HMs when they move or go on leave. He's going to be moved from the Oosterdam soon, but back when I was aboard he didn't know which ship he was going to. Frankly, given his excellence and high standards, in my opinion HAL should move him to a ship where they need some help in picking up some falling standards. I don't know how long he'll be "floating" around the fleet ... my guess is that he may be "on-hold" until it's time to staff the Noordam. Who knows!? :) Yes, Seattle knows ... we only speculate.

He truly is a fantastic "officer and a gentleman," and an asset to the Line. It's good that he's back with HAL. If you ever get a chance to have dinner with him, have him tell you the story of his time on the first cruise ship to call at Shanghai, PRC. Now THAT is an interesting story! :D

I hope we have the pleasure of meeting Mr. Deering on the Oosterdam in May! Only sixty-some-odd days away!

I to lost an item while packing to leave the ship, i had accidentaly put a diamond necklace on the bed to put in my jewerly case, forgot i set it there and finished packing. after leaving the ship, flying home and while unpacking realized the necklace was not packed, i called hal spoke to the lost and found department and answereing a few questions, received a cll back 2 days later and GUESS WHAT..y necklace was found returned to seattle and shipped to my home address. thank you thank you never seemed enough, but i learned my lesson regarding packing my valuables. hal does go to the extra mile, from the cabin boy, steward and everyone else involved in the recovery...hal is my cruise line when i cruise....:) :) :)

deb....

Now that's LUCK!

Have to say my success rate has been 99% with lost items.
On one cruise (won't mention the line) I left some ties in the cabin closet. It dawned on me after I got home when I was cleaning out my bag.

Did the whole contact spiel ... called the Miami office, and mentioned the forgotten items. Of course, they couldn't help at that time, but will notify housekeeping on the ship, yada yada yada. Well, a week goes by, and sad to say, no ties were found in my cabin. There's a steward out there with a new set!

It's good that your necklace was returned. Next time, BE CAREFUL!

:)

(But why would anyone take a bunch of ties??)
