Can you bring alcohol on board? It is vacation!

From the Holland America website...

Except for wine and champagne, alcoholic beverages purchased in the vessel's shops or otherwise brought on the ship cannot be consumed on the ship. Bottles and other containers will be collected for safekeeping and delivered to your stateroom on the last day of the voyage.
A corkage fee of US$18.00 applies to wine and champagne brought to the restaurants or bars for consumption.
Room Service offers reduced-price stateroom beverage packages for in-stateroom consumption of alcoholic beverages.

You can order bottles of liquor from Room Service to be delivered to your cabin and can even purchase them in advance of boarding and they will be in your cabin waiting when you board.

The above suggested search feature will bring up a current list of bottles/alcohol you can purchase.

Ok, I understand where people get upset when the same topic is brought up time after time. However, these posters are suppose to be newbies. Maybe they are and maybe the aren't, but the way you snap at them when the first arrive might come off to harsh. Just recommending to be a little more forgiving.

Yep. Rules don't apply to me. HAL doesn't own the ships, thus they can't make rules that restrict what I want to do. I have paid my cruise fare and can do whatever I want.;)

I agree. Being an adult means you recognize HAL's ability to make rules for their premises, and being an adult means you should respect that. You have rules for your house or your business and expect people to respect them, don't you?

Makes you wonder sometimes.

Doesn't anyone ever read a brochure anymore?
It appears from many threads on this and other sites that people are booking cruises without much information about what they are getting into.

Can you bring alcohol on board? It is vacation!

Welcome to CC.
As you read in the 2 previous answers, you can bring wine and champagne with you in your luggage or carry on bags. There is no corkage fee if you consume these in your cabin. They will charge you $18/bottle if you drink them in the dining-room or any of the lounges.
Hard liquor and beer are not allowed. They will scan the luggage and will look for alcohol. Not sure if they ever find any and keep it until the end of the cruise. When you return to the ship at your port stops they do scan and keep any alcohol that they might notice. You will receive it back the night before leaving the ship.
Hope you enjoy your cruise.

I have never been called to a naughty room. Maybe the poster is thinking about NCL. I just hope that everyone who condemns bringing alcohol follows every rule including propper dress, using pool loungers and smoking in designated areas.

I will accept that comment. I own, and bring a tux, don't smoke ( in fact have a respiratory disease due, at least in part to exposure to my parent's smoking) and we aren't sun worshippers, so rarely spend more than an hour or two at the pool.

I have brought on wine before to drink in the cabin, but since I am never in my cabin except when sleeping or grooming, I am glad I only carried on a couple bottles.

Now, I do enjoy wine with dinner, and the wine packages in the main dining room are actually reasonably priced compared to most of the restaurants we frequent at home. We sailed in 2008 and 2011 on HAL - and the wine selection improved drastically, in my opinion, in the interim. I'm kind of picky about what I like, and I didn't have any problems finding several wines to enjoy.

I also recommend the daily happy hour (buy one, get 2nd for $1) at selected bars and over selected hours around the ship - and the drink of the day can be quite yummy also.

Personally I think it is more fun to have my beverages while I am out on deck or in the crow's nest enjoying the views. And the bartender in the Crow's Nest on the Eurodam does some entertaining magic tricks with cups and fruit too!

Maybe I would have a different opinion if I paid for a veranda room, but since I book inside rooms generally, I have plenty of money leftover for my bar bill:D!

Have a great cruise!

I will match my bar bills with anyone. I am not trying to cheat the ship. It's for my convenience and they never carry the brand of rum I like.

Yes, of course. There are few rules on a cruiseship and they're easy to obey. I'm curious, what other rules besides smuggling alcohol and the above do you break? Do you drop the anchor while the ship is cruising?

m steve
August 6th, 2011, 12:50 PM
I dress according to daily bulletin, my partner only smokes where permitted and we never hog chairs. And we never remove the auto tips but tip at the beginning and end of cruise as well as tipping bar tenders and waiters a little extra. What I can save on a bottle (other than the fact they don't carry my preferences) I distribute among the staff. And I declare all my liquor purchases even if I buy more than the allowance and let the customs man decide if I should pay duty as well as the full price of any jewelery. I might bring something on board but never sneak anything off the ship. I hope all the posters who disagree about liquor can say the same thing.

If Holland America doesn't own the ships then who does??? Last time I looked at the Policies in the back of any brochures it states the following. The ships are owned by HAL Antillen N.V. and charted to Holland America Line N.V. All of these are affiliates of Holland America Line Inc. It is there in black and white. The ships that we love are the property of HAL.

reddingrn,

You do not mention when you will be sailing.

If by any chance, you are sailing on the Volendam between October 4th and 24th 2011, all passengers will be banned from drinking in their cabins during these dates.
(This ban was reported in a Sunday newspaper last weekend.)

I was being sarcastic. That was why there was a ;) after my sentence. I said that because some people seem to think cruiselines don't have the authority to make rules on their ships, which are their property. Some people think just because they have paid their fare, no rules apply to them.

This thread has been heavily edited, and some of the points I replied to have been removed.

Not necessarily. All TAs are not equal. Some are very informative and helpful and worth their weight in titanium. Others are not.

Not that this impacts me but it has piqued my interest, any reason why HAL is saying no to cabin drinking?

DerekOn a charter the chartering organization sets the drinking and casino rules. Maybe they are worried about excessive drinking in unmonitored venues.

I am betting that the Volendam has been chartered for those dates by a private group who does not allow drinking. I cannot find a cruise for those dates on the HAL website not on the online cruise sales websites I frequent.

Rugby Cup charter not allow drinking? They wouldn't get a single passenger.

It's about making sure they don't drink so much that they fall overboard.

"Rugby fans have been warned rowdy behaviour won't be accepted on Rugby World Cup cruise ship tours, with drunk passengers risking minimum 24-hour booze bans and enforced doctor's check-ups.
And as cruise ship organisers look to crack down on onboard drug use, passengers and crew could even face searches of their cabins and property.
The plans are set out in applications for liquor licences that three companies have submitted to the Rugby World Cup Authority."

"The Holland America Line wants a seven-day licence between 10am-3am, for the MS Voldendam during its October 4-24 stay. It will cater to up to 1426 passengers, all of whom will be banned from drinking in their cabins during the cruise.
The company said it also had "zero tolerance" towards the onboard consumption or sale of illicit drugs.
Its application includes a detailed paper, Prevention of Use, Sale or Possession of Drugs Onboard.
In it, the Holland America Line "reserves the right to conduct searches of its vessels, and persons onboard, for drugs or any other contraband."
"From time to time the company will conduct random searches," the document says. "These searches may involve the use of specially trained dogs or technologically advanced detection equipment. Random searches may cover the entire vessel. No individual's quarters or possessions are exempt."
