Looking at insurance through insuremytrip their price is over $60 less than the travel agency (on line). I am niave about this stuff; is the travel agency making the extra in a commission? Any drawback to my buying this directly?

Nope, no disadvantages to purchasing the travel insurance yourself and lots of advantages. The advantages include choosing the policy that meets your needs, sometimes choosing options within the policy, including additional trip costs for trip portions or add ons that you've booked yourself, dealing directly with the insurer if you need to add to the policy or transfer it to a different trip, and probably cost. You also get confirmation and policy information right away.
We go a step further and book directly with the travel insurance rather than insuremytrip. I'll check the various policies and compare on insuremytrip. I then go to the selected insurers website, make my final choices and purchase from the insurer. That has the advantages of sometimes having more policy choice and also of dealing directly with the insurer for any changes.

It’s important to remember that the same plan, offering the same amount of coverage, for the same travelers with the same trip details will be the same cost regardless of the where you purchase it. You will never receive a discount for purchasing a policy from the insurance company, travel agent or a comparison website like squaremouth.com.
Not sure I understand your statement. I have sometimes found better coverage at a lower premium depending on company. So to state the same plan will cost the same amount is misleading.

If it costs less, it may be that the coverage is not exactly the same even if it is the same company. You just have to read the policies and compare the two. Look for coverage limits and time differences (for trip delay or lost luggage). They probably won't match up in every category. You have to decide which risk is most important to cover. If the differences are inconsequential, take the less expensive policy.
