hi - we are looking at a trip from newcastle and thinking we will get the train and then the bus to the terminal as parking seems very expensive. has anyone done this and if so what does it cost and it is easy enough? i see the buses go from the station every 20 minutes and take 20 minutes but just trying to add it all up to see if it will actually be any cheaper!
thanks

We decided to travel from Newcastle as it's our local port and we had done two cruises from Southampton, with 8+ hours of coach travel. We looked at train travel and to be honest, there's nowhere to put baggage on trains that's within sight and too many changes. Also there's never enough time to get 2 or 3 cases on or off a train. We thought about a taxi - too expensive, but in the end we went down to the Port of Tyne one day to have a look & there's a massive car park (a very short walk from ship), which I'm assured never ever gets anywhere near full. You get a ticket from the machine on entry and pay before returning to your car. We checked with Fred Olsen and they assure me that if I get the car park ticket validated with them at check-in, I'll get a concessionary price of £9 per day. This is how we're going to do it, well worth while for 3 of us & no problems handling luggage. Port of Tyne is very easy to find from Scotland. Travel South on A1 then take A19 5 miles or so South of Morpeth and follow the ship signs.
Good luck.

thanks but yesterday did a bit of googling and found a premier inn 5 mins away for £29 for both of us overnight and when i called they said we can park car for free if we make a donation to water aid. i am far happier giving the money to charity so booked in there and no worries re getting delayed on way down!

It's between the Royal Quays shopping outlet and the Port of Tyne - less than 200m from the Port of Tyne car park entrance.
We live in Durham City, but rather than risk delays at the Tyne Tunnel or in Newcastle, we will travel North around Newcastle on the A1, then follow the A19 and the ferry/port signs East then South to the Port of Tyne.
