The countdown is on for my first cruise ever. We are celebrating my 50th birthday. We leave in ten days on HAL's NB cruise from Vancouver. I'm so excited. The weather here in North Texas is terrible. Our high today was 108, the 38th consecutive day of temps over 100! Bring on the cooler temps!

Any last minute tips or suggestions?

Bon Voyage and enjoy your first cruise. The Alaskan temperatures will be wonderful after your heatwave and drought.

Congrats on the 50th and your cruise. I am leaving for our second Alaska cruise in 10 days. Like the previous poster says, bring gloves! The other word of advice is layer your clothes and bring rain gear. Yes, really! And enjoy the cooler temps.

My suggestion: Take me with you! I, too, am suffering the Dallas heat, although I think I am getting used to it as even 108 doesn't seem that hot anymore. You will love being in Alaska this time of year!

I hope you have an AWESOME first cruise, how could you not... you're going to be on a cruise! :D

About Alaska, I've not cruised to Alaska but in my experience it is a beautiful, rugged land. It is worth every penny to see that land!

Some of the areas I've been to in the Summer have swarms of biting flies that seem as if they're they size of dinner plates and bite as hard as a Schutzhund champion! I've seen blankets of those ornery flying demons on critters, I was aghast and glad I wasn't that critter!

Skeeters too... they can take pints! There used to be a joke that the state bird of Alaska was the skeeter because they about 30 different species of those vampires.

If you're going in country be sure to have some quality repellent with you. Once the freeze starts, the pest wane.
