We are sailing on The Century next January and we will be coming down a few days before we cruise. We are renting a car from Dollar and will be dropping it off at the airport location. Are there shuttles from there to the dock?

Thanks for your help

I don't know about shuttles but the port is very, very close so a taxi cost would not be prohibitive. Since they (taxis) charge a metered amount and a shuttle by the person, it might even be cheaper.

I have seen the car rental agency shuttles at the port, so I think they will take you to the ship. I live in Ft Lauderdale and it is a VERY short distance to the port from the rental agencies.

We are also on the ship with Toni in Jan. and are staying at the Renaissance the night before. I guess I should give them a call and see if they have a shuttle, but it sounds like a cab will be just fine.

The Renaissance is just outside the port entrance. A very cheap cab ride to thre ship...but maybe the hotel shuttle will drop you off for a tip.

Always call the local service office (rental car or hotel) to find out what they offer. Dollar just might allow you to drop off the car at port everglades (other rental companies do).

Same with hotels, many have shuttles not just to/from the airport but also to the cruise port.

Thanks to everyone for their help. I think I will call Dollar to see if they offer a shuttle to the port. Last January when we cruised out of Miami we had a car from Thrifty. We returned it to the airport location (which was a good 20 minutes away from the port) and they supplied a shuttle which took us right to the ship.

We were on the Century 4/17/2004 and stayed at the Renaissance Hotel the night of 4/16/2004. One of the reasons I booked the Renaissance on Priceline was their FREE shuttle from the airport & to the ship. Upon arrival at the airport I found out they no longer have a FREE hotel shuttle. We took an inexpensive cab ride to the Renaissance. They encouraged us to take the for pay shuttle to the ship instead of a cab. This was okay. After the cruise we visited the Renaissance again and we took a cab from the dock to the hotel. It was half the price of the shuttle for 2 people. If more then 2 the savings would be even greater.
SUMMARY - Take cabs in Ft. Lauderdale, they are cheap.

I know Hertz and Avis have shuttles from their lots to the ships, no charge. My son has done this. He drops the family off at the dock, takes the car back (not far) and shuttles back to the dock. If you don't rent a car, use taxis. They are cheaper and faster. Even if you're at the AmeriSuites with their shuttle, the day of your cruise everyone tries to leave at the same time so you have to wait until they can take you. It can get busy. Taxis are about $5. to $10. depending on where you stay so do yourself and favor and use them.

I have flown in to FLL and used the Celebrity shuttle system each time for transfers between the airport and ship. The cost was about $30 (this included both the "to the ship" and "from the ship" transfers. The transfers for the Miami airport are about $40,I believe.
Celebrity had a couple of its people meeting me at the airport to make sure everything went smoothly. They made sure I was able to get my baggage from the airline and onto the shuttle without problems.
I'm a believer in using the shuttles. It usually gives you someone interesting (or at least different) to talk to en route.
The Celebrity shuttles have always been a nice experience, the one time I went with my daughter and her husband (NeakBerk, who posts a lot on these message boards) Yes, I am his famous (or infamous) Father In Law.
Because my daughter is time-challenged, we missed our flight out of DFW and had to make a couple of hasty changes in our plans.
We were able to get seats on another flight at a higher cost, but this meant we landed at FLL only 30 minutes before the Century sailed.
NealBerk was trying unsuccessfully to get through to the proper person at Celebrity while my daughter and I worked out the flight new plans.
After we were booked on our flight, I tried to help NealBerk.
Now, you have to understand that NealBerk is trained as an engineer -- and all that implies. He kept getting more and more frustrated at his lack of success on the phone and me trying to take the phone from him.
Finally, he got mad at me and glared as he almost threw the instument my way.
I spoke into the phone with my daughter listing in: "This is (my name) and my Captain's Club number is ......."
About two minutes later, the arrangements were made for a late transfer at FLL by the Celebrity shuttle and Celebrity hostess.
I handed the paper on which I had written the information to NealBerk. With a bemused expression he looked at the paper.
I just smiled in triumph and allowed my daughter to explain.
"Dad just told the guy his name and Captain's Club number and the man almost imediatly answered "Yes, Mr. (my name). I've got you on my list along with the Berks. We'll have the hostess there for you with the shuttle. And we'll be ready to get you though embarkation in time to board ship.'"
I said, "It was really a simple matter, Neal. You shouldn't get so flustered."
Ahh yes, there really is a God and this was one of those times you'd love to live forever.

Although I can understand the previous posters experience with using the shuttles, Ft. Lauderdale is probably the last place I would ever use one. It is just not necessary as the port is only five minutes from the airport with a ten dollar fare. With the shuttles or Celebrity buses you have to wait for them to fill and they go when they are ready. Take a cab you will get there when you want. You still have to get your luggage from the plane.

Just to get what you said straight. If I use X I still have to claim my luggage? Also, there will be seven in our group, any ideas on the best way for us to get to the peir. Obviously a taxi would be out of the question.

Thanks

You will still have to claim your luggage. Take two taxis, still the quickest way and cheapest or you could ask for a van taxi. Its hard to explain but the airport is so close to the port any other way is really a waste of money.

Unless you're absolutely married to Dollar, you might want to consider a car rental company (like Budget) that has a location right by the pier, with free drop-off, and they will (or at least would last time I was there) shuttle you to the ship.

Otherwises, yeah, Taxi is fine.

I had 8 last summer and took to cabs. It's breeze. Will do the same this year with same party of 8.

All of the car rental companies at the FLL Airport location will run their shuttles to the port. Be sure to ask as you board the shuttle as some lines have seperate shuttles for port & airport and some run a route that does the airport drop off's first then run to the port. The port is very close, only about a mile or two from the airport and most car rental locations are actually in between.

Thanks Larry

That's what I thought. When we cruised out of Miami last January, that's how it worked.
