I am interested in any recomendations anyone has for a company in which to inquire about private transfers from the Airport to Central Rome and then to the Port.
I would also like to schedule a private tour of Rome and Vatican with a good tour company as well, plus if that same company can handle the transfers.
If anyone has had experience in this let me know.
We will be joining the Spirit on May 31st, 2012.
Thank you all in advance.

We used Rome in Limo and were very pleased with them.

I have used Driveinrome twice in Rome and once in Florence and I thought that they were wonderful.
A big plus is that they take a personal US check and that saves from carrying a lot of extra euros around.
Their website states that they take a check. It is www.Driverinrome.com (http://www.Driverinrome.com)

We used Rome Cabs, run by Stefano Costantini for transfers, also does great tours. Excellent prompt service, nice private Mercedes sedans, half the price of SS transfers. He responds promptly to inquiries. www.romecabs.com.

I would also highly recommend romecabs.com
They are not a cab company and do a wonderful job on the transfers and they also go great tours.

We've also used Rome in Limo - in fact, twice in the last two years. They were great both times.

We recently visited Rome and had an excellent experience with Cristiano Pellegrini of Rome Travels.
He is a very knowledgeable licensed guide (with a PhD) and it made our days touring the ancient sights and the Vatican very special. He also arranged our airport transfers.

Getting a guide for the Vatican is almost essential unless you want to stand in a very long line, for a very long time. On the day we visited the skies opened as we were whistled through security and there were some very unhappy people standing in that long line!
If you have not booked a hotel yet, we can also highly recommend the Rome Cavalieri Hotel (Hilton/Waldorff Astoria chain). It was simply delightful and had wonderful views over Rome.

Anybody have any suggestions to solve our dilemma?
We booked long ago with a tour company in Rome "Your tour of Italy" and went to Wells Fargo today to get Euro travellers checks as this company and almost every other one requires payment in Euros or Euro t/C. No credit cards. Unfortunately WF has just discontinued selling Euro t/c, AAA no longer sells them here not does BofA, Chase, etc. We are in southern California and would have to go to San Francisco to buy them!
We leave in 2 weeks and really don't want to carry around so many Euros. I just wrote the company but probably won't hear for 24 hours or so.
Does anyone have any ideas about this in the meanwhile? I know we could carry US$ t/c and go stand in a bank in Italy to convert but very time consuming.
If we had more time to explore other companies it would be easier but this company seems good and we have scheduled several transfers from airport, Roman tours and a tranfer to Florence so it isn't very easy to change.
Thanks for any thoughts!

Many Credit Unions provide TC's to their members. They might sell you some for a reasonable fee.

I heard from the touring company in Rome and was told that USD travellers checks were fine. (or cash, of course).
I am relieved as there are a few banks here that sell them, I believe. I wonder if AMEX in Rome would sell them. Could one put that on the credit card? Well, it's academic at this point but perhaps others can be forewarned in the future.
Don't you find it odd that these companies can exist without accepting credit cards?

The easiest way to get Euro t/c's in the US is to head to any of the major airports that have a Travelex outlet. You can get your t/c's and any local currency cash required.
I think you will find that the reason that the tour companies prefer t/c's rather than credit cards is that it makes it possible for them to hide the income from tax.

We recently used www.Romeshuttlelimousine.com for transfers to and from the airport to downtown. The service was good and the site is in English.
