View Full Version : What do you wear for embarkation?

Dressy or casual? Resort casual? Does it matter which port?

We like to dress for warmer climates when boarding in FLL, DH likes his Tommy Bahama shorts and a nice polo or golf shirt. If it's cooler weather, he will wear Dockers. I usually wear capris, sandals and nice top, but we don't over do it for embarkation.

However, I saw some "super, duper" dressed up folks last time we were in the Neptune Lounge.

The one lady looked at us like we were something she just scraped off the bottom of her shoe! I really hope we don't cruise with someone like that again. She treated the concierge and the rest of the pax like it was her own private yacht.

Here's what I was wearing to board the Oosterdam last month:

http://homepage.mac.com/revneal/.Pictures/oosterdam2005/embark/greginfrontoost2s.jpg

This had the advantage of getting my black blazer aboard without me having to pack it, and it also gave me a jacket to wear in Dallas getting to the airport and in south CA, where it was a bit nippy in he evening wind.

Laura, I think you are reading my mind:eek:

Of course time of year and port have a lot to do with how we are dressed and if we have to travel all day (or all night) We are normally casual but not scruffy. Our last cruise was November and it was already cool here as well as in San Diego so I wore nice dressy black dockers, black loafers and a nice tropical Knit golf shirt. Well this Sunday Tom and I already decided on what we are wearing, yes it is kinda cutsey but we thought it would be fun. We both have the Navy and white "Dam Ship" t-shirts I plan to wear mine with my Liz C shorts and white sandals and Tom will wear his with his creme colored shorts and sandals. Then we will change after the life boat drill because we have 6:30 reservations for the Pinnacle. This is the first time we have ever boarded wearing shorts.

(Heather, I am counting on you to make sure the weather is WARM this Sunday:) )

 I wear my white duck trousers, navy blazer (with the gold "anchor" buttons), white shirt with contrasting cravat, my dress deck shoes and, of course, my yachting cap. Must maintain standards, don't you know!

HAL is so good about getting luggage delivered promptly, I hardly worry about dressing for the ship - I dress more for pre-boarding activities knowing that being better dressed seems to get me better service in airports, restaurants, shops, etc.

However I'll be more concientious on other lines having had to wait 2-3 hours for luggage on MSC...

Oh c'mon, Sail, what were you gonna say???:o

Actually I dress quite nicely. I dress as though I will have to wear it to dinner (casual) that night. One just never knows.

Dave, I love that picture. You look perfectly normal! Who wooda thunk?

If it's warm I'm probably in a Hawaiian-print muumuu. :)

Last summer it was cold and rainy when I sailed from NYC. Can't remember how (or if) I was able to keep warm.

if it's warm, DH wears shorts and a polo ..and I usually have on a sun dress .. nothing fancy .. just comfortable and cool.

We normally arrive the day before a cruise, so we have haven't been "wrinkled" by travel .. but, we are wearing clothes that would be acceptable for a day at sea ..

ekerr19 - doesn't it drive you nuts to meet people who think they deserve all the attention and look down on others??? We ran into a couple like that on the Zuiderdam in 03 .. They sat next to us at one of the suite parties .. we introduced ourselves, they, frosty, introduced themselves and then proceed to keep their noses in the air and never said boo to another soul! Why bother coming?? We ran into them several times throughout the cruise and they never spoke .. we did .. one morning, in the pinnacle for breakfast..it was us and a table for two and them next to use at a table for two....we greeted them..no response..no recognition that there was even other people in the room, other than running the wait staff ragged with their demands. Thankfully, all other suite passengers we met were delightful!! (and casually dressed!)

Enjoy your cruise!

EKerr, maybe this is the same couple? Do you know Peggy Sue? Didn't you tell me another time that the incident was on the Zui?

We travel and board the ship in business casual attire. We don't dress up to travel like they used to do. (Remember the old airliner pictures with pax dressed to the nines?) But I don't like to look like I just got out of bed ... and I see many travelers who look that way getting on the plane and getting on the ship. I think it's just sloppy looking. But that's just me.

Peggy Sue - It sounds like you could have been on our cruise in August '03 on the Zui... this couple was down right hideous to everyone else!

EKerr, maybe this is the same couple? Do you know Peggy Sue? Didn't you tell me another time that the incident was on the Zui?

Yes, I did - they were the most awful couple we've ever encountered (mostly her!). The woman was seriously angry that someone else had booked "her" cabana and proceeded to fight with the other pax and the concierge about it - it was truly embarrassing; not just for them - but for all of us that had to endure that extremely rude and obnoxious display.

Brian - I agree 100% !!! We always try to dress for the trip down and for embarkation - again not overdoing it (especially in some locals) , but being more than presentable seems to open a lot more doors than not...

We usually travel to the port at least a day before embarkation, and while we like to travel in comfortable clothes, we are closer to business casual than to working-around-the house casual. For embarkation day, DW will maintain her "June Cleaver" decor' but if anything, I will dress for the weather, but the jeans and shorts will still stay in the suitcase for that day. I also agree with Brian's outlook.

I get straight to the pool, drop my drawers, and catch some much NEEDED rays!

After about a week, people stop staring:eek:

Yours in a beige speedo,

I don't believe any ladies fashion faux pas could ever equal the "speedo". That said, we will be boarding on Easter Sunday and probably atending Easter services somewhere and not wanting to change again, will probably board in our Easter Sunday best.

DH will probably be wearing shorts and a polo shirt. My plan is a pair of capris and a lightweight sweater set. :)

JaniceB

It really depends on the weather. I prefer Capri's, a sleeveless shirt, and a sweater when I leave from FLL. My DD's are only interested in wearing something with their bathing suit underneath it. The first time they cruised they wished they had worn their bathing suit. My Dh will want to be as comfortable as possible.

As I was waiting for my flight out of FLL this past weekend, I observed a stunning middle-aged blond lady debarking a plane in her full-length sable, dark sunglasses and gold jewelry carrying her Coach travel satchel (jewels and swimwear?) - I assumed she was from New York heading for QM2...

Always a jacket, with dress slacks or khakis. Never sneakers. Sometimes with or without a tie (but in Florida, only and depending upon what shirt I have on).

First impressions are what count and I want comensurate service at the airport counter, on the plane, at the rent-a-car counter, at the pier and, on the gangway. Looking nice and neat is never inappropriate.

Just normal clothes -- you know, blue jeans, boots, black Harley t-shirt, riding leather, with a polka-dot bandanna around my head so my hair doesn't frizz up.

Who started this weirdo thread, anyway??

I did, why? I didn't think it was weird. I am curious - that's all. We got a nasty look last time we were in the Neptune Lounge from some uptight lady and I was just curious what most folks wear.

If you don't like the thread topic - no one forces you to participate. :)

I just googled you and up it came! It's lovely, isn't it?:D

I was just putting together our album from our last cruise and came upon this shot the Ship's Photographer took of us on Embarkation Day for our November Oosterdam cruise. As you can see, we like to dress up a bit:

I wear what DH lovingly refers to as "airport clothes."
When I was commuting from Ohio to Fla. twice a month, I would always arrive in FLL dressed up. [He would rather travel in more casual apparel.]
So he'd say I was in my "airport clothes."

When we embark, I usually wear nice pants and top and jacket, or a light cotton suit. Comfortable enough for the 1 1/2 hour drive to the port. And dressy enough in case our luggage isn't delivered before our 6 p.m. reservations in the Pinnacle!

Hi E,

Please don't be upset. I posted my message tongue in cheek, trying to say that what any one given person thinks is appropriate (i.e., a biker) should obviously be accepted by others as the norm; and he would be outraged if any 'weirdo' suggested any other option.

There are people, unfortunately, who out of a false sense of superiority tend to be very rude about others whom they think are . . . beneath them? They hurt my feelings too, but I cannot deal with them without being rude myself; which would violate MY standards of social propriety.

N.B. I usually wear jeans and a nice shirt, with a suitable overshirt or jacket.

Lane

typically shorts and a polo shirt, with a pair of slacks in my carry-on should my bags not arrive at my stateroom in time for dinner.

embarkation/debarkation are travel days - my chief concern with clothing on those days is comfort.
