Day 2 – sea day
Thursday morning dawned and although we were in an inside cabin we could tell it was a sunny day because someone on this board gave us the tip to leave the TV on the bow camera so when the sun comes up so does the picture on the TV. This worked great. Because we had two children with us we had also pulled the curtain across in front of the bathroom and left the bathroom light on so the kids could see where to go if they needed to get up in the night.

The kids were all excited and we headed to breakfast in the Lido. By the time we found a table for 4 and were sitting down while Dh got his breakfast they were both green. I thought “oh no, what have we done”! My son said his head felt “fuzzy” and then he looked at me and said “mummy, you never said the ship would move!”. What could I say to that?! Then my daughter (10 years old) said she had a headache. I tried to get them to eat something but they refused so I went back down to the cabin, got Bonine that we had purchased in Seattle (we only can buy Gravol), got the sea bands I had bought and their coats. I also learned about the chewable Bonine on this board. I told Dh to take them out to the aft pool deck while I went back to the cabin. The fresh air did the trick for both of them and by the time they had the tablets dissolving they were both right as rain. Phew!!!

They could hardly wait to get to Club Hal. We signed them in and then headed to the spa to schedule the two treatments I had won. After that we went back to the cabin to finish unpacking. I was really surprised that there was plenty of room in the cabin to store 3 large suitcases, two rolling carry on suitcases, two back packs, and one large tote! That said, our cabin did not have a chair, our steward said there was no room for one, so we pushed the coffee table under the desk where the chair would be pushed in. That worked for us well as we never just sat in the room. The kids loved the upper bed and I found the bathroom had plenty of storage with the shelf behind the mirror and the lower shelf. We also had a date in the crows nest to meet up with two other CC members.

We picked up the kids at 11:00 and they couldn’t wait to go back at 1:00. We ate lunch in the Lido and watched the scenery. We went to the shops on board because everything Alaskan was on sale…I mean big sales. Rob bought a HAL polo shirt; his size wasn’t there and I asked the shop clerk and she just said what was there was what they had. So we bought one size up hoping it would shrink. Later in the week his size was on the shelf so I think she couldn’t be bothered to check for us as she was never friendly. I washed it yesterday and it did shrink so all is good.

I can’t remember what else we did but we enjoyed ourselves. Soon enough it was time to get dressed for the first formal dinner. We had first seating so the doors opened at 5:30. Ian had his 3 piece suit and Natalie a formal gown…DH and I also got dressed up but nobody had eyes for us! We had our pictures taken before dinner as we knew if may be a lost cause after dinner as you never know what Ian may spill….

We enjoyed the formal dinner but did not many empty tables. Our dining room staff were terrific. They made origami figurines for the kids each night out of the menus. The kids loved it. Both kids always ordered off the kids menu and the kitchen always made it first. They always had ice cream for dessert so we all finished at the same time.

We changed as the kids wanted to get back to Club Hal for 7:00. I was surprised that both of the kids wanted to stay right to the end at 10:00. There were 11 3-7 year olds registered for this cruise and 30 8 – 12 year olds. Since most of the 3-7 year olds were either 6 or 7 they spent most of their time in the tweens room. Rob and I discovered the Explorer’s Café and library where we spend many hours after than. I loved to work on the puzzles, read, play chess or checkers, or just sit and DO NOTHING! Sorry for shouting but that was amazing to me as I am out of the house 13 hours a day and never get to do nothing! I even started reading a book! I haven’t read a book in 7 years! Now I just have to make time to finish it.

Next day way Tracy Arm and Juneau!

Thanks for the report. As I write these lines the Volendam is in Skagway and will be in Glacier Bay tomorrow. Are you home or still on the cruise?

I am sad to report I am sitting in our family room reminiscing about our wonderful first HAL cruise. I can say it won't be our last!
