Prior to booking a cruise, is it possible to find out how many cabins are still available?

You could begin the process of making a reservation, type in each category of room, and see what staterooms come up. That would give you a rough idea of how well the cruise is selling. Maybe there's an easier way though...

I assume you mean the total inventory booked or available and the answer is there's no quick and easy way to get that information. HAL only shows a limited number of cabins in any given category and in turn don't show travel agencies each and every cabin available. Asking if a specific cabin is available is possible but to do that for a whole category and in turn all categories for the whole ship would be painfully slow and laborious.

There is another website where you can ss the entire ship but unfortunately, they also are a travel agency/booking agency so I'm not allowed to post the website. You might do a google search, though.

By going to the HAL site I can find many more cabins open for our cruise next month than show there.

Even if you did go through the HAL site and request rooms not on the list to see what's available, you don't know how many guarantee bookings there are. Some of the cabins that show up as available will go to them.
I have poked around the HAL site to see what's available on my upcoming cruise, and I was surprised to see how many cabins there are. But then again, there may be a lot of unassigned guarantees.

When I check that site ---- I also check each catagory which gives me a better picture on how that particular cruise is selling. I know it's not foolproof but I see many more available cabins than on HAL's website (or any other cruise line, for that matter). You can also change the currency box for price conversion. JMO.

That's probably due to the cabins being released back to HAL as your departure date is approaching.

(They also show me one DA on the Main deck to make up the standard group of 6.)
When I go to the HAL site I can find 6 additional D cabins open on the Lower Promenade. The site does NOT show you all available cabins.
