NCL has the only published Baltic Cruise itinerary for summer 2013. A 9 day Copenhagen to Copenhagen which includes St. Pertersburg. Hope other Cruise lines follow suit. Keep on trucking. I the meantime we are heading for Lost Wagers, NV at the end of this month.

I am hoping for a CCL Baltic maybe from England, if there is such a thing. Since I am wishing I might as well wish for what I really want.;):D

Joyce, is this one of those gambling cruises? If it is, we have friends who will be onboard as well. Actually, Dennis & Carolyn (SCPerk) who are on the Spirit to Australia were planning on going but Dennis' mom was just diagnosed with cancer and doesn't have that long so they had to cancel. Our friends, Mike & Jacque who actually picked us up in Galveston and had us as houseguests and are also doing the Spirit to Australia, will be on the Valor with you. Hope you run into them.

Sorry to hear about Dennis' mom.

I agree totally Claire. What a series of disasters from unprepared crew to a questionable ship. I understand the Concordia is the sister ship to the Splendor. I knew there was a reason (besides the decor) that I did not like that ship.

One problem is you have to know there is a problem before you head to your muster station and I think that was how a lot of this occurred.

lettienets
January 15th, 2012, 11:31 AM
I have often speculated in my mind how an evacuation would unfold and this Concordia is a real wake up call re safety, size of ships, drills etc. Heck, these poor passengers didn't even have their safety drill yet, scheduled for the next day! I have not been in favour either of the new lazy safety briefings given in a lounge rather than the muster stations.
It seems to me we will be hearing lots of stories about pushing and shoving, survival of the fittest etc. Sure haven't heard one yet about an act of kindness or heroism. Haven't got any details either re injuries...

I will be curious if there is more seriousness and detail at the safety briefing on my cruise this Sunday and will report back.

I thought these ships had sonar or something to detect undersea object, obstructions etc. If the rock isn't on a map, why wasn't a rock detected? Anyway why was a ship that big going between two rocks when it had a whole sea to use? This captain is in big doo doo, will be fired, sued and charged with something. Lots of lessons are going to be learned from this disaster.

I guess there is still an investigation going on as to how this crash occurred. Someone did post on another roll call that the bodies of an elderly couple were found in the submerged restuarant of the Concordia. I think we all can imagine how that happened. How very very sad for their families.

What about all the poor people that are physically challenged? Is there someone assigned to help them in case of an emergency? How does a person that can't walk get from one floor to another with no elevators? When an emergency happens how do you know whether to go to muster station or to your room to get your life jacket?
As you can tell I've been having all kinds of scary thoughts ever since this started!! By the way, hi everyone!! I have been lurking here for a while!!;) This is for George!! GO GIANTS!!!:D:p
If I'm ever on a cruise when there is an emergency I'm going to make sure I help someone less fortunate then me!! I may be getting old but I'm still lucky enough to be able to get around without help!!!
We might consider the Baltic someday, if we have any money left after the cruise to oz. everything in Australia and Hawaii is very expensive!!!

Ruth,

That is how I think the elderly couple found in the restuarant got left behind. They were unable to get out and no one stayed to help them. Bless you for thinking of others. I would hope we would do the same thing in the case of a disaster.

You are right about Australia being expensive. We are not lingering in Hawaii. As west coasters we can come in the day of the cruise, board and not have to pay for a hotel. However, that being said, we had very good luck finding a hotel the last time on priceline. If you haven't already booked for Honolulu, give that a try. We use the bidding system.

I cruise with Holland America a lot and there is really a more elderly clientele on that line, longer cruises etc. I cannot see how so many of them would have survived a disaster like that with their physical ailments etc. So many have scooters, walkers and canes. And when the ship listed people had to climb up the highside or slide down to the lowside etc. Who knew where to go. Can you imagine the panic in the stairwells with the the whole ship trying to get somewhere at the same time without elevators and in the dark? It would have really been a disaster. This Costa cruise seem to have younger looking people and very few kids. Only a 7 dayer. I was surprised when I heard people could join the cruise at more than the original port.

It is a wakeup call for the industry.

As far as the gargantuan size Oasis and Allure, I don't think of them sinking so much as I look at the open wind tunnel from the stern up the promenade and wonder about that with a rogue wave (well probably wouldn't get that high) or hurricane. I was in 40 ft waves once in the Drake passage and it is mighty scarey. Dishes flying, furniture toppling...I don't think ships will ever be built as big as this pair anymore. Trying to fill them week after week must be tough. No wonder they have gone to a "dine around meal plan ticket" to earn more money....have you heard that?

Have not heard of the "dine around meal plan ticket". Is that like a ticket that allows you to dine at any of the speciality restuarants whenever you like?

I agree with you Loretta. As more and more stories are being told, the death toll rising, it was truly a disaster and may be shown to have been, totally preventable.

Hello everyone. It's been a while.

On a positive note, I just finished watching a movie called The Tourist. It's a great flic and the entire movie takes place in Venice. If you want to relive our two day stay in Venice last October, I would highly recommend watching the movie. It stars Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie. You'll feel like you are back in Venice.

I loved the shots of Venice but thought the two actors didn't really seem to have any connection, certainly not anything irresistible.

hi guys

I'm back from my birthday cruise on the Crown Princess. It was just what I wanted - very laid back and relaxing. So different from our Magic cruise that was so high energy. I'm already looking for my January 2013 cruise. The Breeze has a nice 8 day itinerary that I'm considering. But for right now I'm concentrating on planning my TA in November. Not only did my teams lose in the playoffs, I didn't win any money in the office pools. Double bummer!

Had a super cruise. This trip I didn't participate in a cruise critic meet and greet group but I really think that enhances a trip and I missed it.
In light of the Concordia, I had big hopes for the safety drill. As far as the muster, no improvement at all. It was terrible, the worst I have ever experienced, people still arriving at their stations 15 minutes late, many carrying bottles of beer, icecream cones and even two guys with plates of food, nobody listening, everybody talking and laughing even during the demo and loud speaker..... We weren't put in line by height so I couldn't see anything, the loud speaker was all garbled. Not an officer in sight. It was awful. Only the usual dancers and low level employees in bright vests. But I gave an officer a piece of my mind when I saw one shortly after. Very rattling.
They did however have good instructions on the TV and also a very good video explaining in detail all the instruments up in the Bridge that officers follow and plot.

The food was good and salmon is back on as the everyday fish instead of mahi mahi. I had no problem picking something! Food was similar to the Magic but it is the the new menu like we have seen published by zydeco on cruise critic with the "didja..." suggestions etc. Ate breakfast mainly in the dining room. The buffets at lunch, the wok, deli, etc were great and open till 3:30. The tables were cleared fast and always available. Actually I was really impressed with the Lido staff.
My tablemates were great, just 4 of us singles, a lady from Toronto and two men, one man is a part owner of Milano Jewellers in all the ports and he was visiting his stores. Needless to say I bought a beautiful pair of ruby and diamond earrings with his discount! The two major shows were fantastic, the costumes and dancing etc. No cutbacks there. And the Punchliner comedians in the comedy club were fun, we had 3. One had to go home for an family prob.
Well, back to porridge and cereal for breakfast! And good coffee. Ship coffee is terrible. Loretta

I'm sorry to hear the safety drill was not important to everyone, it should be as was recently demonstrated.:(

Sounds like a good cruise, Loretta. I too had hoped that the muster drill would be taken more seriously after the recent disaster. One of the Australians on our Spirit to Oz roll call just got back from a cruise on the Victory but I doubt it was the same one you were on. I love the colors on the Victory! Maybe that is why I liked the Magic decor so much.

Claire, I have been following the thread on the main Carnival CC board about the Baltic cruises. Nothing definitive yet but it does appear hopeful that one of the Conquest style ships will be there in the summer of 2013. We are continuing to save our air miles for that eventuality.

I was wondering if the Europe itineraries are delayed again because of the Costa Concordia accident. Hard to push Europe when people have visions of a ship on its side! There will probably be good deals when it happens.
Carnival Corp is taking a big loss with the Concordia and lawsuits etc, and now one less ship in the fleet..... Who knows what the plan will be?

Hello all - sounds like you all had a great cruise and roll call on your Med cruise on the Magic. We are doing the Med cruise for the third time in October - this time on the Breeze. Could I please bother you with a couple of questions?

In regards to Venice, I heard something about a people mover. Can someone shed some light on this, like where do you get on and off?

On prior cruises we have used a ship shuttle to Piazzo Roma to purchase our Vaperetto passes and board their. Is that still the closest place to the ship's dock to do this?

And finally, were you still allowed to bring on wine in each port to consume on board.

Sorry to jump in like this but would really appreciate your help.

Clairescurtains
February 7th, 2012, 11:35 PM
I can answer a few of your questions.
The people mover is a good walk from where the ship docked [it might be a different dock next year] don't know about the ship tour, we try to avoid them if possible. The people mover just took you about 1/4 mile to the area where you can buy tickets and board vaparettos. You can also buy your tickets online in advance. http://europeforvisitors.com/venice/articles/venice-vaporetto-fares.htm

As to the wine, it is a toss up, sometimes there were ship personnel screening and they say "check your liquor/wine" and sometimes it is port personnel and they could care less, we bought several bottles and never checked anything but you may have a different experience.
There is/was a duty free store at the dock in Barcelona on the second story towards the right, before the picture takers and after the security. If you are boarding in Barcelona you can each take a bottle of wine on board with your carry on luggage.

Hope you have a wonderful trip.

Thank you for this info. We've sailed into Venice twice and each time the first place we could purchase tickets and board a water taxi or vaporetto was at Piazza Roma. Is there now a place nearer the ship/dock that you can do this, or is it still at Piazza Roma?

Thanks again

Actually, you can get a water taxi almost beside the ship at the pier. This is the one that goes direct to St Mark's (behind it) and I forget what they charge but there is a booth right there to buy tickets. This is one way not to have to take the Peoplemover to Piazzale Roma and then a vaparetto.

In Oct when on Carnival Magic I took a 2 hour Carnival ship tour on the day our ship arrived and it was with the same company. It was an overview or orientation of all the main islands. You did not get off the boat. The reason I took it is our ship arrived on a Sunday afternoon at 2pm and it was something to do late in the day that was easy and a lot of things in Venice were closed. The boat did let people out at St Mark's Square after the ride around tour before heading back to the ship if anybody wanted to get off and stay there. They also told them that drop off point behind St Mark's was the same place to catch a taxi direct back to the ship.
So this was my easy way to see something and the next day I actually walked into Venice from Piazza Roma, a little confusing but ok.
Rick Steve's guidebook of Venice was great.

The tour was also inexpensive as I recall. Or just take the taxi.

Thank you Lettie. This sounds like the arrangment we have been hearing about. I think it must be new since we were last there in 2009. I am sure that this is what we will do. We were looking into hiring a private water taxi for 10 pax to pick us up at the pier but our concern was if we arrived earlier (as we did in 2009 by 2 hours) we would have to wait for the water taxi to arrive. Do you recall how much the tickets were? Also some of us are going on to St Marks and some of us are going to head out to Murano and Burano the first day. Do you know if there is a transport direct from the pier to the islands?

My two hour narrated boat tour/ride with Carnival on a boat from the same company was only around 20 euros. And like I said, on the way back it will let people off at St Mark's if they did not want to go back to the ship.

Now the water taxi from the pier, and the ticket booth is very visible.
I thought it was around 14 euros for a group boat taxi, it is a group, and it goes around the island, not down the grand canal direct to St Mark's. It was not a bad price, since you would have to pay a euro or 1.5 for the Peoplemover and then 6.5 euro for the vaparetto unless you got a pass of some sort. So what the heck, it gets you there fast and direct....

I never heard anyone mention any direct way to Murano and Burano from the pier. You have to take the Peoplemover to Piazzale Roma and go from there somewhere. The Rick Steves book has info that says you can get to Murano from St Mark's (the big boat dock San Zaccaria-Jolanda dock behind St Marks near the Bridge of Sighs) vaparetto #41 goes every 10 min and you can go from Murano to Burano from there too LN vaparetto from the Murano every 30 min. See if you can get the guide at the library. It is worth buying for Venice. Has detailed info on everything there, all the info you need even inside buildings and churches, other places too.

Again, thanks so much for this info. Even though this is my third cruise to Venice it seems that some things have changed. I downloaded the sample of Rick Steve's book onto my Kindle and it does look good. Trying to decide whether to load the entire book onto my Kindle or buy the book. I'll probably download since it is easier to carry.

As for Burano and Murano I had printed out directions on transfers to get there the last time and was taking a group of 20+ cruisers with us. A nice young Italian businessman I met on the first leg of the vaporetto going to St Marks actualy got off with us and took us to the next stop and showed us the routing to take and where to get off and board the ferry out to the Islands.

I wish C.C. would leave the roll calls for reference. The prior roll calls were a wealth of information for us when we were planning our first two Med cruises.

I'm looking hard at the 8 day Eastern sailing on January 19 for my birthday cruise next year. I'm not thrilled about St. Thomas and Nassau but I definitely want to go to Antigua and Tortola. The Freedom does the exaxt same cruise for less money, but I really think the Breeze is worth the difference.

The water taxi fare to St Mark's was each person around 14 euros.
That was nice of the fellow to show you the dock where the water taxis etc are behind St Mark's. I think you can vaparettos there to a lot of places. I carted my Rick Steve's book around and it was great for little maps and descriptions inside buildings. I had a lot of pages highlighted and turned down so the book itself worked for me and the index etc. So handy. Not sure how that works on a kindle etc.

Ship pals here, I booked all 3 legs of the SA cruises, going for broke!
Heck, some people go to Florida for the winter, I am going cruising for 48 days in 2013! Won't have to worry about being platinum now no matter what scheme Carnival changes to.!

As I said on another thread, we did the Panama Canal transit on the Pride and on the Elation. The Pride was sooo much better. Firstly, there is much more open decking so everyone can get a good view as you go through the locks. Also, because the Spirit class is a bigger ship, it gets very, very close to the walls; I believe they said a foot and a half on each side, so if you are on a lower deck, next to a window, you have an up close and personal look at the canal walls.

And, just to make it better...Steve & Marilyn (Europebound) just posted on our Australia roll call that they have booked the Miracle also.

So you did buy a motor home, I remember we were talking about in Magic up in the Lido around breakfast and I was trying to persuade you not to! :D Well make sure you get out and get your money's worth out of it! Have fun!

Oh Denise, tell us all about it! Year, length, kind features that you like. I'd never ask the price as it is none of my business and as long as you are happy, who cares! Would love to hear the other details and glad you are still onboard for the Baltic.

Loretta, just out of curiosity, what was your objection to the motorhome? I know as a single, RV traveling is a bit more problematic. I have a great deal of admiration for the women we have met who have lost their mate but still keep RVing. Just don't think I could do that.

Money. :p For the amount of time you will own and expect to use it, is it worth it at his stage of life to buy or rent. That is how I would look at it. Ownership over renting and use of the money/value on other things.

Aha, now I understand! Since RVing was something we discovered before cruising, our motorhome has been a good investment for us. It has allowed us to enjoy a lifestyle with a lot of people our age, has allowed us to meet people and see parts of the US we wouldn't have been able to do otherwise. RVers. like cruisers run in the same circles and you meet up with each other from time to time. Sort of a social network, much like cruising is to us as well.

He everyone. I am amazed looking at the winter weather that our Med ports are having. The picture of ice on the Venice canals was amazing, as well as the heavy snows and ice in Croatia. I see Rome is supposed to get 11 " of snow today. That is surprising to me, considering all the palm trees we saw on that trip.

We booked the Carnival Freedom for October 2012. Going to Aruba, Caracao, Grand Turk and La Romana. Looking forward to another trip to the Caribbean. I just wish it was sooner, rather than later.

If the Panama did not conflict with the SA I would do it even tho I just went on Elation in Apr 2010 (after we all met on Dream in Nov 2009) That one was west to east. Would like to go there again especially when it is winter here. We have snow today, last night, tomorrow, not a big accumulation but it is really cold out there. Decided not to go to aerobics. Burr.
I won't rule out the Baltics, depends on when. Since SA is spring, it would have to be fall with a TA maybe. I am just looking at how to pay for all these trips, juggling the figures!

Wonder if Carnival is going to send two ships to Europe or one. They are short one now eh? But their name is in the mud...

Really never thought of a SA cruise. I should look up the itineraries. As I mentioned earlier we booked the Freedom for October and some friends want us to go on a RCCL trip in April. But I am already going to London May/June and as far as the UK I have really seen a lot of it over the years. Even did a couple of those narrow boat canal cruises there. I don't venture past London anymore unless I am visiting a friend. Would rather do a Baltic one.

My pvp called today and she said the past guest rate will be the same as early saver a few days. I don't want to commit again to ES and get stuck with the non refundable and the rebooking fee again, did that twice last year already!

So I am on the fence unfortunately. Just feel too wound up to make another travel decision when I have so much else going, esp the $$$$$ SA. Bought more euros and pounds yesterday for upcoming trips.

Our TA has an open house this weekend and I am picking her brain as to pricing. We are looking at inside refundable deposit using Military and past cruiser rate. Will let you know how we made out. It might be time to start a new thread.

OK, we are booked but with a refundable fare and at about the lowest possible rate. ;) No windows or balconies for us. That is subject to change of course, we might decide to upgrade the room but for now we are just happy to be booked.
Al said he was not looking for another cruise for a while but Scotland and Ireland intrigued him. We loved the southwest of Ireland and happy to see the eastern/northern side.

WOOHOO!:D

Where are you going and on which ship?

That was the one that appealed to us the most so we have booked it and I started a roll call, or at least I think I did.
Glad to know we are sailing together again.:)

I stuck my nose into the Roll Call and saw you and Val. I need to do some banking stuff this Saturday and then I can book it. I figure I'll reserve something under the past passenger rate and then if I find something better (i.e., cheaper) elsewhere, I can always cancel.

I booked online through CCL and didn't see anything about upgrades but the early saver and past guest rates were the same. At least the base rates were, we did get a room on 7 rather than the least pricey one. I thought getting something refundable was a good plan. We might upgrade as time gets closer but for right now we are at least on the ship. It looks to me like it will be very popular based on the huge response on the new roll call.

It seems to me they weren't charging a premium yet for some upper floors so maybe that is the upgrade my pvp was talking about., where some prices were the same. I don't know I did not pay that much attention because I know I am not booking.... But after Monday ES will be the lowest price and past guest will not be the same as ES.
I would book refundable too. If I had to cancel my 3 legs of my South America for any reason, I would have 3 deposits there I would have to transfer to something else too.

I did the same thing Claire. I generally book on Riviera or Main, but this time I booked on Empress. The upcharge was only $10/day. The only way to get any kind of inside with a window (1A or 4K) was at the full rate and it just wasn't worth it.

Claire, did you check the military rate? That is what I got for my 4K and it was only $100.00 more per cabin than the early saver. This way we still get price drops before final payment and no penalty for cancellation.

The 4K cabin was not available for Past Cruiser rate..The Past cruiser rate was lower then the Military rate for some strange reason. If we elected to take a 4K cabin the price would have been almost $400 more.

We are doing B2B2B on Splendor around SA. and B2B2B on Legend, Aug 20, sept1 and sept 13. Even though I love a balcony, we booked inside for all the legs. We were lucky to get the inside porthole on Splendor but will be "in the dark" on Legend.

We would not spend the extra for any better positioned cabins. I prefer to do more cruises in less luxury. I did cancel the Spirit to Sydney.

I just decided that I'm not getting any younger and I can't take it with me.

:p Meow. I had to re-jig the other cruises, dropped the third segment of the South America Feb/Mar 2013 ones and moved the deposit to the Baltic one and then added the Sept 1 as past guest (in case I cancel, no penalty). I do get nervous being booked up so far in advance. Don't know why. Lot of time and money committment I think. And I seem to change my mind if something else comes along!
Yes I get jittery. How do all you others book so far?
Still quivering here at home! (cat chow, yum yum!)

Before we retired I use to say that it would be great not to have to book way in advance. That we could take advantage of last minute specials..... not look at us!!

:D I felt the same. Hardly ever do a last minute trip since I retired. I guess we are the kind of people who are organized and like to know what is coming.
I still get jittery. I think it is because I wonder if something else better will come along. (ha ha ha, must have felt that way about a man, still single!)
Oh well, I have several trips and cruises lined up now. That will keep me busy planning. It is so much more fun going on trips where you know people!

We're looking at it but would probably just do the Sept 1 as we have done the Baltic. Loved it but when we docked in LeHarve on another cruise we went to Paris so the Normandy Beaches have been on my bucket list as I have an uncle buried at the American Cemetery there.
Ya'll are tempting me!!

Oh, please, please, please join us! I know that if you want to do the the same tour several of us are doing, it will be easy to get 6 other people to join you. It seems a lot of people really want to do Normandy. Must be an age thing.

Patsy, Carnival is still showing past guest prices same as early saver, so you could book and if you have to cancel, get full refund of deposit before the 90 days or whatever.

Thanks, Anne & Loretta, I'm trying to figure out how to spring this on Joe when it's so far away. We had a couple of long driving trips planned (which he dislikes) so may can make a deal with him. So we could book on past guest and not lose deposit if we cancel within the right time frame?

past guest deposit is fully refundable up to 70 or 90 days??? before not sure what the deadline is. I am tired of alway paying the admin fee when I move an ES rate to something else as it is non refundable within whatever that time period is. I have only gotten one ES discount. It seems to me the best rates are within a couple of weeks or so that a new itinerary is announced. I usually book the cheapest insides and they never seem to go down. Once in awhile I treat myself, like the cove on the transatlantic Breeze.

You might also check the military rate, if you or Joe qualify. It is holding quite well. And certainly look into the 4K stateroom for a decent price for air and light.

Is anyone doing anything in Nov/Dec? I looked at a TA from London to Ft. Lauderdale that went to LeHarve, Lisbon & Bermuda but the air talked me out of it.

I'm doing the Mariner TA from Rome to Galveston leaving November 2, with a good air price via Choice Air. The cruise price has gone up since I first booked, but it's still a good deal. We have a very active roll call with lots of activities planned.

I really wanted to book that cruise, even before John made it the Bloggers cruise, but it would cost me $1,000 more than the Pride cruise I ended up booking and I just couldn't justify the increase. I can go on a second cruise from NY or B'more for that price. And I probably will. Looking at Bermuda in May 2013 and Canada/NE in September or October 2013. Maybe after the Bank of America finally gets off its corporate tuchas and actually does something about my mortgage, I'll be able to head over to Europe again.
