I have never been cruising before but do they generally allow you time to spend almost the whole day at a port for sightseeing or does it vary and at some ports you are only there for 2/3 hours?

Generally the ship remains in port for a full day. There are organised excursions which you may or may not wish to take. On the other hand you can explore on your own. There is generally plenty of time to see most of the major attractions at each port of call. On the daily programme and, most especially at the gangway, the time to be back on board is clearly stated. Make sure you return on time for the ship is unlikely to wait for you.
On some occasions the port call are more brief. On these occasions you will still be able to go ashore and enjoy your visit. :)

Sometimes if there has been bad weather or mechanical problems you may find the port visit shortened. When we recently did a Baltic cruise the ship should have reached Copehagen late morning/early afternoon. Due to ship (Black Watch) having a ship wide power cut , we did not arrive until 5pm. Fred still managed to put together an excursion for those that wanted one, we just walked to the little mermaid and back. They will do their best to stick to what they have said they will do,but it's not always possible. Go with an open mind and go with the flow.
