Well, the 2011 fall cruise ship season is about to start tomorrow in SD with the Zuiderdam coming in first and then on Thursday it will be the Westerdam and the Statendam. I don't know how the SD people feel but I know I will be glad to see those cruise ship coming back from their Alaska season. The SD pier looks strangely vacant without them but that will dramatically change starting tomorrow and we will be part of the passengers getting on those ships. Can't hardly wait - two more days.

I agree wholeheartedly! I'm looking forward to boarding the Zaandam in two weeks. I'm also glad that HAL will continue to sail from SD during the next fall/winter cruise season.

I can't wait either! I'll be boarding the "O" in November, but my DH and I will trek down to SD a couple times before then, just to see a sailaway or two. Enjoy your cruise!

I too enjoy having the ships back in port. I work downtown and in the fall I like to run along the Embarcadero and it's really cool when a ship is in port to see all the people on board waiting to sail away. :D I love the sound of the horn when they're getting ready to push off too!

Isn't that the best sound, I totally agree with you Buckett, love the sound of the horns. There is nothing better except being on the ship that's doing it.

I just wish Las Vegas was a bit closer so I too could enjoy seeing the ships at the embarcadero :o
I guess that is why in the winter I have spent so much time looking at the web cam :D

I've been following the ships coming down the coast and I'm hearing the Golden Princess is going to be late coming into LA. Now it looks like the Zuiderdam is right above SD so she should dock on time but...........the Westerdam and the Statendam are well above SF, so don't know if they will make into SD on time. I hear the seas have been rough, so it could be slowing those ships down.

According to SDMIS, we are suppose to have three ships in San Diego on Thursday. This would include the Sapphire Princess.

Your absolutely right graf, but it is just a port of call for the Sapphire, she's not picking up passenger or dropping off. Back to packing.........

Buckett I also work in downtown San Diego (on "C" Street) and have missed seeing all of the ships in port too. Recently the Millennium was docked and I think she was the first ship in quite some time. Today when I saw Zuiderdam in port I was like OMG, this is good. Quite a few times my timing has been perfect when leaving work and I hear the horn sound and get goose bumps from being so excited. :)

Unfortunately many San Diegans believe that the cruise ships were never coming back, after the local media reported earlier this year that Carnival was repostioning the Spirit.
It would have been really nice if the same media would have had a bit of "welcome back Holland America" coverage today, but alas, no.
Too bad HAL's local pr dept. missed the boat, so to speak.

San Diego; one of the best, and nicest, ports to sail in and out from! Always a smooth operation; those shore-side folks have their stuff together

Is there a new cruise terminal in SD? Which one will HAL be using?

Is there a new cruise terminal in SD? Which one will HAL be using?
Yes there is, on the Broadway Pier. Depending on how many cruise ships are in port, HAL tends to use the original B-Street pier first
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/0/0c/B-street-terminal.jpg/800px-B-street-terminal.jpg (http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/0/0c/B-street-terminal.jpg)
You're looking at San Diego's B-Street Cruise Terminal with the Carnival ship (right) having the prime position (this pier has an 'airport-style' sky bridge) on the north side of the terminal, and the Celebrity ship (center) having the secondary position on the south side of the building. The third ship (poss. NCL) is berthed at a temp. location. Anthony's Fish Grotto is just out of the picture, to the right.
Since 18 DEC 2010, after an upgrade including a new terminal building called the 'Port Pavilion', the Broadway Pier, adjacent the USS Midway carrier/museum, is now also being used as a cruise ship berth in San Diego, giving the port three full-time large cruise ship berths

HAL's Rotterdam using the Broadway Pier and it's new Port Pavilion for the first time on 22 DEC 10

Thanks. I'm watching 2 HAL ships arrive now. It looks like the Statendam on the left going to the new terminal & Westerdam to the north side of the old terminal. Not being familiar w/ SD, I didn't know if the new terminal could be seen via the web cam and now I know it is. So all is good!

No trips out of San Diego this year for the first time in a long time. Boo hoo. Too bad HAL is not doing the Sea of Cortez, We may have booked Mexico again. Instead we are flying across the country to do the Caribbean this winter.
