Do we need to bring our passports on shore with us at port stops for reboarding or will any photo ID do? I don't like to bring my passport to the beach if I don't have to. I asked someone at ship services but they weren't sure. If a photo ID is OK can it be something like a student ID, etc?

Thank you for the help.

South America, or Mexico, it's a good idea to have a photo copy of the face page of your passport with you on shore. We leave the originals in the safe on board. It's also wise to cary a photo copy of both sides of your credit cards. Also leave copies of your important documents at home with a friend or relative.
On some itineraries HAL will take your passport and give you a copy.

All you need to reboard on the Caribbean and Canada/New England cruises are your ship ID and a photo ID such as your DL. On the Vista ships your picture is embedded in your ship card and is scanned, so a photo ID isn't even asked for.

We keep our original passports in the safe, but do have a copy in our wallets just in case.

On the Vista ships your picture is embedded in your ship card and is scanned, so a photo ID isn't even asked for. Isn't it this way on all HAL ships? We've never been asked for anything when reboarding except for our ship card. When it's inserted into the machine our photo pops up and we're in.

I agree that it's a good idea to always have a photocopy of your passport with you. You just never know what could happen while you're ashore.

I know the original post was a question about a beach location. For international locations that have a VAT refund we carry our passports in order to fill out the paper work. We also need the passports sometimes at the bank or even on large credit card purchases as ID. I have a neck wallet that fits the passport and I wear it under my shirt.

To get back on the boat you only need your ship card but sometimes (like in Naussau) there are local authorities who only let ship passangers onto the dock. This is established by showing your ship card in combination with government issue photo ID.
Had only driver's licence (nova scotia) and ship card in carribean :)

that you could have a health or robbery event while on shore? I personally would never leave the ship in a foreign port without proof of citizenship and other ID.
Also, pax have been stranded before. I really encourage all to carry copies of necessary documents when leaving the ship.

You need your ship ID and a photo ID. The time I was on the Zuiderdam the ship ID contained a photo on it. Everyone had their picture taken when the ship ID was made so that you had both requirements on the same card.
If that is not done, take the ship ID and your drivers liscense ashore. But you do need a passport when going into a forieign port or returning home.

Never thought about this scenario but I'll be making a copy of my passport now. I'd rather be safe than sorry. Thanks for the insight Grannynurse.:)

Hmmm ... I always take a copy of my passport with me and leave a copy at home as well. I never take much in the way of credit cards ashore ... I don't like the risk involved. BUT, I have usually taken my passport ashore -- either where it's required or just for photo ID purposes. However, perhaps I shouldn't do that.

I'll have to give that some thought.

When going to HMC I don't take my Passport. No need.
