View Full Version : Loud Noises on Oosterdam-any explanations

We just completed a lovely week on the O'Dam. Everything was wonderful, except for some horribly loud banking noises during the night. I am a woefully light sleeper, and was kept awake by thunderously loud noises virtually every night. Eventually they gave us another cabin to sleep in, but does anyone have an explanation. We were on deck 6, fairly forward. The noises were coming from inside the ship-we were in an outside cabin. I just want to know what was going on for future bookings. The noise sounded like steel beams clanging in the night. The crew didn't offer any explanations, but they could certainly hear the noises when they came to our cabin.

The crew didn't offer any explanations. "Did not" or "could not"? I don't read O'dam threads, but if nobody else has remarked on it, they might have been doing heavy repair work -- or might have just noticed they better do some soon!

The crew goes home at night and that was the boats taking off

WE were on that deck a few weeks ago (although just aft of midship) and didn't hear anything to speak of, just the winches whenever they'd lower (or raise) a tender...

Maybe that's what it was - a loose tender swinging in it's davits...

Big booming noises at not-too-regular intervals coming from the bow area while the ship was moving? Could have been waves hitting the bow.
Early morning clunking noises from the bow, then you would wake up to an announcement about the tender tickets? Could have been the anchor chain going down or the windlass.
General factory-type noises from another direction? Could have been some maintenance or the workings of some big piece of equipment. Maybe a bilge pump/water treatment plant machinery/engine room?
Irregular thumping along the side, then bottom, then the other side? Could have been rowdy passengers being keel-hauled.
Geez, I dunno. I feel like Click & Clack on Car Talk.

We had a forward cabin on one ship and were awakened (rudely) by the bow thrusters when we were going into port in the early AM and once in the middle of the night when the ship was turning to meet a Coast Guard helicoptor which was evacuating a child for a medical emergency. Might be your answer. We just rolled with the punches as it was a last minute, VERY inexpensive cruise.

We were on this cruise (March 5), but on deck 4, and did not hear these noises. We also didn't hear anyone mention noises. The crew does work on the outside quite early as we had someone outside our window at about 4 am washing a lifeboat. Also I heard the Oosterdam hit a trawling net on the way back to San Diego, but that was daytime and not noisy.

We were on this cruise and also heard rhythmic metallic clanging all night long. We thought it sounded like something rolling. For comparison sake we were in 7047.
BTW - it was our first cruise and we had a great experience!

I keep waiting for someone to answer - "Yeah, that noise was the DH/DW and I and we're sorry we disturbed you.":D

OKAY, I see this all the time and have never asked what it means, always thinking I'll glean it from somebody's post. But, alas, I give up.
What is a DH and DW. I've got the "W" and "H" parts figured-out. But the "D" baffles me.
Does it stand for: Distinguished? Designated? Depraved? Damn? Drunk?
I KNOW when you tell me I'm gonna go "Dooh!" But tell me anyway, please.

WELL...Usually it means Dear, but...in some cases, I'm sure the others fit...:D
