If you are a family of 4 with 4 pieces of luggage what is the best way to get from the pier to a hotel in the vicinity of Plaza de Catalunya? Will we fit in a taxi or do I need to make other arrangements?

It would likely be two smaller taxis or one larger one with 4 pieces depending on how large they are.
There were many taxis lined up as we disembarked years ago, figure about 30 euros +/- luggage and port charge.

I would write to your hotel and ask them if they could arrange a car for you that would accommodate the four of you and the four pieces of luggage. See what the price is.

Barcelona taxis are only permitted to carry a maximum of 4 passengers, so perhaps ask the dispatcher for a larger sedan or mini van. He will arrange something for you. BTW, there is a fee for each bag that goes in the trunk; if there is any way to carry the smallest suitcase in someone's lap, that will help with the fees. We learned the hard way when we threw all our carry-ons, plus the bags, into the trunk. Just saying. :)

We had a good experience two months ago in Barcelona, using a cab from the airport to our hotel -- two couples with four bags plus carryons. No problem fitting into a regular taxi. The cost was 35 euros to take us to a hotel on Montjuic.

4 people and 4 suitcases should be no problem. If the first taxi is too small - take the next one! We paid less than 20 Euros going to Hotel Jazz, and 30 from there to the Airport next day.
