I would like to know about the laundry facilities onboard the Statendam.
We are going on a 15 day cruise, and with the 50 pound weight limit on the airlines,
we might have to wash out some clothes. I believe there is a laundry room, on each floor
of the Statendam, can anyone enlighten me about how it works, cost etc.

There should be a laundry room on the Main and Lower Promenade decks, as well as on one upper deck.
There are washers and dryers costing $2.00 and $1.00, respectively. Detergent is furnished; dry sheets are not. The machines take quarters, which are available at the Front Desk.
The rooms also have irons and ironing boards.
Should you decide you want to send laundry out to be done for you, then you can pay by the piece (very expensive), by the bag ($20-$26, depending on which report you read), or purchase a cruise-long package.
Things come back clean, pressed, and either on a hanger or folded in a basket.

Go w/the ship;s Unlimited Laundry package - best bargain on the ship;)! For 7 day cruises, I believe it was $49/cabin (per cabin, not per person), and for our 14 day Alaska cruise this past August, it was $99/cabin which was a great deal split among the 3 of us. Love, love, love coming back to our cabin and finding our freshly laundered clothes either pressed and hanging, or nicely folded between crisp sheets of tissue paper in a little basket. We sent laundry out every day (except the last of course) and were well pleased w/the service. An added bonus is finding those tiny laundry tags inside an article of clothing weeks or even months after a cruise - reminds you of great times aboard a great ship - priceless!:D

We were on the Verandah deck in March, 2008, and there was a laundry room on that deck, port side.

If you do to choose to do your own laundry there are almost always machines available after 4 pm which is great if you eat a late dinner.

Is this package available on every HAL ship? If so, how do you sign up for it?

You call Seattle ,and ships services and request you be charged in advance. It is about $7 per day ...more if you dont pre pay We found on the ship it was $9 per day if you did not pre pay.
They will give you as many Laundry bags as you want, and in 48 hours its back, clean and ironed or folded as you wish.... delivered to your room.
A comment, You are paying for a vacation, Take the airfare, cruise fare and all the assorted costs and divide then by the number of awake Hours, lets say 15 hours. Then times the days. Thats going to give you how much an hour you are spending, per hour for the experience,
Lets just say its 2500 per person air and cruise for 7 days X15 = 105 hours Thats $23. oer hour and you will waste a good 2 hours every timew you wash... $46 plus the machines etc. do it 3 times in a week and thats $150 in time and $$$ where for $50 you could have had the stuff done for you and have the time for your self...
Penny wise and pound foolish to do you own... unless you always dreamed of working in a laundry at sea,

The unlimited is a great service. But remember, HAL's wash by the bag is only $26. if I recall correctly. We bought three of those and found that adequate for two slobs on a recent 28-day cruise. Do the math.
And we did those bags only because NA doesn't have self-service coin laundries. Otherwise, we do our own wash, as we will during a forthcoming 37-day cruise. On such a long cruise one welcomes some everyday chores.

I know there is one on the lower promanade deck......at least 4 washers and 4 dryers if I remember right. The machines dispense the detergent so you do not need to bring any. You will need dryer sheets. There were 2 irons and 2 ironing boards. The room is small and hot. One of the stewards told me there were often fights in the laundry which I doubted until I saw one myself. It was sad and funny at the same time.....so be careful about taking someones clothes out of the dryer/washer.....what I saw wasn't pretty.

I noticed one of the posters indicated that if you pre paid the landury service it cost less???
If that is true why is it not listed in the services you can purchase prior to the cruise?

Doesn't the laundry service do everything on a very hot wash? If so, I wouldn't trust most of my things to them - a lot of the T-shirts, underwear, blouses etc need to be washed at a temperature of 30 or 40 degrees C. or else they'll come back shrunk or worse...

I would prefer to do my own as I have many things I don't put in the dryer. We did the unlimited laundry on the Noordam and it was fine...I just held back things I didn't want thrown in a dryer. But on the Maasdam last year, we liked having the launderette available to us.

About the only thing we ever have the ship's laundry do is dry cleaning and my tux shirts. On a few longer cruises, all on the S and R class ships which have self-service, we have done some laundry ourselves, mostly my wife's delicates which she'd not send out to the ship's laundry for exactly the reason stated above.

The laundry service is not only reasonably priced but extremely well done. I have sent 100percent cotton items that have not come back shrunken or faded and I love the way they wrap it in tissue and place it in a basket. I rarely return from a HAL cruise with much dirty laundry

I never found any place where you could , with out a phone call to Seattle, order laundry.
I learned by word of mouth, and everyone told me it was $7 a day I called Ships Services, and for 29 days they charged $206. Thats $7.10.
on the last half of the cruise 17 days, they offered unlimited laundey for 156, of $9.10 a day per cabin in the daily rag.
On 29 days we did a bag everyother day as we had been traveling in Europe for 2 weeks prior.... about 13 bags... What was a pleasure was to have a His and Hers bag. After our wore something you took it off and put it in the bag, and the next morning it went out, and the one from the day prior arrived... like clockwork.
We sent everything out from Tshirts, Jeans, Underware, microfiber, Slacks shirts, everything, It all came back perfect. folded or on hangers.
At the end of the cruise we filled our suitcases with fresh cleaned clothes, and put em away when we got home...
What Barante fails to calculate in doing his own wash is the cost of the time he paid for a vacation, being taken from him for mundane work.
I remmeber this guy Henry Thoreau, wrote something about that when he sailed up to Walden Pond. There are costs in dollars and costs in time.
You can always get more dollars, you can not get more time.... How much is your's worth?

Just came back from Prinsendam transatlantic and jeans still fit after being done in ships laundry. Self service laundry was closed more than half of the cruise due to norovirus, but because of that, you could get the all-you-can-stuff bags done for $12. For the record, DH's shirts come back looking far better than they do when washed at home.

I don't go on vacation so I can do laundry! And most of what I wear on vacation is of the wash-and-wear type, and so I don't worry about shrinkage (or if I do..it doesn't get sent). I'm glad to know HAL has laundry deals. I'll be sure to budget for them!

I echo the comments of others who found that their laundry came back looking at least, if not better, than when they did it at home. I did, however, do the undies in the cabin. Why, I am not sure - come to think of it.

I've never done laundry on a HAL ship as the self-service wasn't offered on the ships I sailed. On Cunard the laundry service is by the piece and that can be very expensive. I don't mind doing laundry and like being able to pack lighter. My biggest issue is when I have to wait for machines. I'm about to take a 12 day South American cruise. $7 a day is a steal and I'll do that in a heartbeat.

A cruise is my wife's vacation, too. Consequently, I do not feel it is fair to ask her to do laundry and miss out on the fun that I'm having while she's doing it.
You can have all the laundry you want done for a total charge of about $7/day multiplied by the number of days in the cruise. Or, if it is just underwear, socks, etc. stuff all you can in a bag and have it done for a flat charge/bag.

No, use the non Govt. e-mail didn't get the service monkey pix,
To busy developing spike strips for scooters that emitt a dog whistle when driven over..... having trouble with the arming circuit:rolleyes:...you dont have a good source for SEMEX ?
I admire folks who will give up 2+ hours of their life every day to save $4.00... Why over a 7 day cruise thats $24 !!! That could get you 4 cocktails... or a bingo card... penny wise but pound foolish as the case may be,

Call ship services 800 541 1576 for a laundry package. They will need your booking number, and a credit card. There is wash and fold, or wash fold and press, or dry cleaning. Get what you want. They can also sell you 1 liter bottles of liquor for your cabin.

We just got off a 17-day cruise on the Ryndam. I really debated spending the money on the unlimited laundry service but decided, with the suitcase limits with the airlines, I should. It was the best park of my cruise! Really! It cost $7 per day. I did call HAL ahead of time to order it along with the cooking class and they said that it had to be ordered onboard. I sent a bag every day plus maybe 4 or 5 extra bags. Here was the break-down in laundry costs:
Self-serve, $2 wash $1 dry, self serve was closed 15 of our 17 days due to the GI illness on-board.
By the bag, $20, for as much as you can squeeze into the bag.
By the piece, varies, I priced out an average bag full and it was around $40-50.
We never waited more than 12 hours for our laundry to be returned and sent our last bag Friday night with disembarkation Sunday morning.
And yes, Assateague Island Princes, I do get this little thrill each time that stiff laundry tag itches my neck and I remember back to when all my needs and cares where taken care of by lovely, lovely others.
