Excuse me if this is a silly question...but...on formal nights do any ladies wear fur stoles or is this considered inappropriate? I don't have one, but was thinking of borrowing one to cover bare arms so I won't freeze at dinner. But, I don't want to offend anyone.
Thanks!

Probably the most casual of any trips -- might even see blue jeans at night on some of the ships. Really would consider less dressy and NEVER anything as much as fur. Last summer they even had a heat wave -- 80 plus up there. We have been on 4 Alaska cruises so have seen many and would say fewer tux. than on most -- many just sport coats on formal nights. My husband always take a tux or at least a dark suit but some people are really ignoring any sign of following the suggested dress -- really too bad. Also, if they dress up for dinner they change after and show up in the show room in shorts and t-shirts -- ugh!!

Was in Alaska last September and it was cool enough to wear furs - we had a couple ladies aboard Amsterdam who wore their furs on formal nights...
...one passed through the Explorer's Lounge as we were enjoying our after-dinner drinks in her full-length gown and a white mink. On her way out of the room we saw a flash of red on the back of her coat - the price tag was still on it!!!

BEPSF - that is hilarious...oh my goodness! I bought a fake fur coat once, sort of a leopard-looking print. Somehow I got out of the store with that plastic security tag still on it, they forgot to take it off at the checkstand. I didn't even notice it. Went to a party with the coat on, someone said...."what's THAT?" I was SO EMBARRASSED!!
:p Jane (I really needed a smiley with a red face!)

That is funny! Perhaps she was a nouveau riche? Anyway, I don't recall seeing any furs on any cruise. In this day and age of PETA, I would be afraid of having someone sling gravy (or worse) all over it.

I agree one would think that this cruise would be the one to wear furs, like wise we thought since it was cool more men would wear tux. This cruise was truly the most casual. I would guess DH was one of 10 guys on the whole cruise wearing a tux. The the room it takes to pack a fur I would definitely leave it at home.

Well, it was Nouveau Fur, at any rate - I recognized the sale tag as having come from one of the furriers in port...
For those that object to real fur (or their prices) but enjoy the style, here is a great resource: www.fabulousfurs.com (http://www.fabulousfurs.com/)
Either way, I say go ahead and wear that fur!

Hi,
Yes, go ahead and wear your fur stole! Holland America has such lovely traditional feel to her ships and many of the guests are well-traveled, sophisticated. They might not be comfortable wearing a fur themselves, but probably will hold their tongue and their gravy! Not too many people strike me as the type to throw gravy or worse, on an HAL cruise.
Alaska cruises tend to be a bit more casual, so I might consider a pashmina shawl as well - might be a bit easier and more compact for packing and to snuggle into to keep warm. I grew up in the Pacific Northwest, 90 miles north of Seattle and lived in Alaska for a summer - I absolutely adore warm, soft and fuzzy things to keep out the chills.
Best Regards,
Julia

I didn't see any furs but I did wear a pashima in the dining room one night.
Most people did stay dressed up for the show after dinner. Didn't see anyone dressed inappropriately!
Only saw a couple of tux's though - most men wore dark suits.

Better yet...buy one there. My husband purchased a gorgeous fur jacket. No, he did not wear it. He had it shipped home. However, I really saw no need for one. The ship is temperature controlled. Yes, the formal nights can be very formal. DO as YOU likE! But, it definitely was one of the most casual trips I have been on and we LOVE to dress up. Alaska is just more outdoorsy and aboard people have a more relaxed atmosphere. I saw sweatshirts and pants many nights; however, we did dress up.

We are considering Hal for an Alaska cruise next year. I have read that the dress code is a bit relaxed for Alaska. My preference is a 'walmart' line but my DH wants to do a poker cruise and there is one on the Oosterdam. I would not wear jeans in the dining room but was wondering just how casual do the men get. I know I can get away with slacks and blouses and be very comfortable. Can the men go to dinner in dockers and short sleeved golf type shirts. We don't mind dressing up for formal night but the rest of the time we would like to be casual and not have to bring so much stuff. Traveling light appeals to us these days.

Dockers and jerseys with collars (golf/polo style shirts) are fine for casual night. Informal requires a jacket as does formal.

DW wears her fox-fur earmuffs on cruises to cooler climes! Makes her look like Princess Leaia on a bad hair day, because they are a light fur and almost blend in with her hair color. She gets a lot smiles from folks that pass her by, but boy are her ears warm!!
I purchased them for her in Ketchikan 2 years ago at a store that sells leather and fur items because she couldn't find her old pair of earmuffs. . . . . funny, I just found them in the closet this weekend!!!
