View Full Version : Weird question to ask about smoking

Since I'll be smoking on the balcony next cruise, just wondered where do you empty the ashtray? It seems if I do empty ashtray in trash can in the room, the room will still smell of stale tobacco. This seems to defeat the purpose. Are there trash cans outside?

We took along some Ziploc sandwich bags. Each night we would empty the ashtray into one and put it in the trash

I would hope you would't dump your ashtray in your cabin wastebasket until several hours after the last butt was stubbed out in it. Then, go ahead and use the cabin wastebasket. It will be emptied twice a day.

You should use one of the ashtrays provided by the line which are designed to prevent ashes from blowing away. Just request one from the cabin steward on embarcation day and leave it out there - the steward should empty it every day when he wipes down the railing, etc.
Don't empty it in the trashcan: Too dangerous and could start a fire.

Ask your room steward for an ashtray and he/she will get you one of these (click on the photo to see it full sized) Keep in mind that this photo was taken when smoking was allowed in the stateroom. You push the button on the top down and the ashes and butt go into the sealed part. The room steward will empty and clean it twice daily.

Those would be dangerous -- hot ashes -- melt -- cause a fire.

Your cabin Steward will properly dispose of the ashes if you leave them in the HAL provided ashtray.

PLEASE DO NOT empty your ashtray into trash can. Unless you bring along an empty aluminim can that you can douse with water, leave the ashes and butts in the base of your ashtray. You MAY think the ashes/butts are cool but it's so easy to start a fire. Just get more ashtrays if you need to until your steward empties it for you.

I travel with a smoker and that's what we do: Ask the cabin steward for an ashtray and the one in the pic is the exact one we get. We never emptied it and it was always clean, so it must be a magic ashtray! ;)

Looks to me like a "dices, slices, chops everything" gadget you see on late night tv when the station hasn't sold the time.
"Just $19.95! And if you call before the second day of your cruise, you will get absolutely free a bag with our ships' names and where they go! Act now! But wait! Call the front desk within ten minutes and we will throw in a complimentary can of soda for only $1.25. You get the slicer and dicer, the bag and the soda all for the cost of the cruise, plus the $1.25 for the soda and $11.00 per day service charge."

We're not smokers, but on our last Alaska cruise we had cigarette butts on our balcony most of the times we went outside. Suspect they rolled under the partition after being discarded by smokers next door, but I suppose they possibly could have been tossed from balconies above ours and carried by wind gusts.

DH smokes on the balcony. Rather than use an ashtray, he saves a beer bottle, into which he puts a small amount of water. The water in the beer bottle stops any danger of fire, or of ash blowing about, and the bottle is not likely to blow over or away. Usually one bottle lasts for the entire cruise.

I remember this photo. I was on the Star Princess prior to the fire. Probably in one of the affected cabins based on the picture. IIRC it was initially attributed to a carelessly discarded cigarette, but later was determined to be something else.
To the OP - Tell your cabin steward you want to smoke on your balcony. You will likely be given an approved ashtray and he'll clean it for you. Giving him an extra tip for his service would certainly be appreciated.

DH used to smoke. He never smoked in the cabin in the same way he never smoked in the house at home.
He used to have a small personal ashtray which he carried with him everywhere. When he smoked on the balcony, he put the cigarette end in his ashtray which he then closed – it was completely airtight when closed and safe.
When he was in a smoking area on the ship, he emptied his ashtray into one of the general ashtrays.
He found that, if he used one of the ship's ashtrays on the balcony, the room steward did not always empty it.
From experience, I know that the smell of dirty ashtrays is, in fact, worse than the smell of someone smoking.

Star Princess fire in March of '06, I believe the cruise ended early in Jamaica. It was a month after our first cruise on the Caribbean Princess...so not something I'll forget! Pretty scary...and caused by someone smoking on the balcony, I believe. It amazes me that it took Princess almost 6 years to ban smoking on the balconies.

dr dawg starting a 'firestorm here.' just a hypothetical. what if someone smoked only in their bathroom, not in the cabin per se. then collected the butts, sprayed down the room with a smoke-remover spray, put the butts in a sealed plastic bag and deposited them in a public recepticle on another deck, not in the cabin trash. butts were put out in the bathroom sink, under the faucet. could any room steward report smoking? how could they prove the odor did not come from another cabin? would hal's $250 fine stand up? and, further, could one pay the $250 cleaning fee prior to or during the cruise and then be allowed to smoke in the cabin? how would additional fines be assessed? hmmmmmm. i invite comments, not hyperbolics.

Who knows.
Until someone tries it and reports to us about their success or failure and whether any or most or none find it credible........
It's a bad idea IMO
I think that smoke odor will travel through the ventilation system to nearby cabins on the same line. They may or may not report it and it may or may not be traced to the 'hypothetical' smoker's cabin/bathroom.
Rules are for everyone and we don't get to pick and choose which each of us wish to honor and which each of us feel entitled to disobey.
When you buy a ticket on a HAL ship, you agree to their terms. If you don't like the terms, don't buy the ticket is my personal way of looking at it.
IMO......

It would be even worse doing it that way. I speak from experience because that is one of the places I would smoke in my stateroom after first waking and before hubby was awake.
The CC member in my stateroom immediately after me said that the smell of cigarette was so much more intense in the bathroom than anywhere else in the stateroom. Apparently they and the stewards finally figured out that the smell was in the shower curtains themselves.
We, as smokers, do not realize just how bad it is until someone extremely sensitive can pin point the problem. I did not believe others, my own hubby included, when they tried to tell me. I thought they were all just pushing their own agenda of doing their best to get smoking completely banned. NOW I know better as the CC member immediately after me was extremely nice about it and even went so far, if I remember correctly, to let me know that normally they are not this badly affected:(
So, no the smoking in the bathroom should NEVER be done!!! Only in APPROVED locations as per each cruise line.

Depending on the amount of suction in the bathroom vent some smoke may leak out into the room & be vented into the hallway- chances are it won't but the cabin steward will probably still smell it.

Joanie, I was not offended by the picture of the ashtray in the bathroom. I felt the picture of the fire damage on the ship was not humorous.
I was on the MS Statendam April '10. At 5:10am the fire alarm went off. We were out at sea that day. The sight of the fire crew running down the hallway and no information until about 20 minutes later from the captain was a very scary feeling. It turned out to be a minor fire on a lower deck, that was under control.
I too smoke Joanie. On my 12/11 cruise, I only had a quick cig in the bathroom myself and kept my ashtray in there also.
The ashtray's that HA provide are safe. I hope that anyone smoking and using them will leave the cleaning/dumping to the cabin steward's.
Just a little quick story here. My mother smoked. One day she decided to empty the ashtray out of the car. Little did she know that one of her cig's was still smoldering. She dumped the ashtray in our garage (detached). Within 15 minutes the garage was blazing. Thank goodness no one was hurt and the detached garage could be rebuilt.
