We are on The Veendam leaving BA on Jan 23. Does anyone have information about their excursions...are we better off booking our own or using theirs??
Also, do the men really wear ties & jackets for formal nights?
Thanks

Yes, men wear ties and jackets for formal nights. (can be sportjacket, but it is a jacket):) If you prefer not to, you can eat in the Lido, get room service or dine in the Canalleto (I think the Veendam has a Cannaletto).
Information on HAL's excursions are availble on their website. Log in, go to your reservations and then down to itinerary to book shore excursions (you don't have to book but you will have a description on all of the excursions). We don't usually do too many, but it depends upon what appeals to you and what you want to do:D

We were on the Veendam cruise leaving Fort Lauderdale on October 19, 2011, and ending in Rio on November 22, 2011. You didn't say what your stops are but here are the outstanding people we used at some of our stops. All the tour guides were exceptional and all spoke English very well. If I get back to South America I will use the same guides again. We thought we did much better on our own. The tours had smaller groups and were more personalized.
PT. STANLEY, FALKLAND ISLANDS : Gerald Cheek (gmcheek@horizon.co.fk) Gerald has lived in the Falkland Islands his whole life so he is a wealth of information. He has a car that seats four comfortably.
MONTEVIDEO, URUGUAY: Marta (msmtaiz@hotmail.com) Marta took us all over Monetevideo and treated us like family. A very special stop at a winery was the highlight of the day.
BUENOS AIRES: Gastón Cernadas (privatetour@bafreetour.com) gave us a combination of a walking tour and a driving tour. He showed us all the highlights of Buenos Aires and knew the history behind all of them. It was a terrific day.
RIO DE JANEIRO, BRAZIL Leticia (rioplus@rioplustours.com Leticia is a lovely lady who shares her love of Rio with you. She took us to all the high spots and gave us the history on each one. The tour ended when she took us to the airport for our flight home.
When you contact them please mention my name. If you need more information just ask.

Have you checked your Roll Call to see what excursions -- both ship and private -- others are doing?

Thanks Carolyn,
Could you tell me a bit more about the BA tour, please? The email address says private tour- was it a 'free tour' where you only tipped or, because it was a private tour, was there a charge?

Hi Sportsmum,
It depends on how many people you have on the tour. We had eight and it was about $60 each. You can make the tour longer or shorter. The advantage of a private tour is the flexibility.
Send him an email and see if he is free on the day you need him and what the costs would be.
