I saw some photos over the weekend and think I noticed a female Chief Officer in HAL uniform.

Does anyone know if there is a female Chief and if so on which ship she is sailing?

I believe I heard her this morning from the Bridge of the Noordam. She was talking to one of the other ships in port.

As we were leaving Half Moon Cay on Dec 1 -- the captain announced that a female officer was talking over for our final day to Ft Lauderdale.

Don't know her name.

......a female officer was 'talking' over?

I don't understand.

A female officer was 'acting captain' ? Why, what happened to the Master that he wasn't?

Can you clarify.......
When you got your end of cruise log, did it indicate a Chief Officer as a female?

Recently on the Noordam, the Master turned over the helm to another officer for training purposes. He/she sailed up the St. Lucia coast to Soufriere.

"Taking" Over.

The captain just made the announcement as we were leaving HMC. I didn't really pay that much attention to the announcement.

DH thinks she was the Second or Third Officer. It was not the Chief Officer.

Nothing was in the Cruise Log about her.

Thanks, Candy.

That's how they learn.
They have to 'drive' sometimes. :)
We had a 'fill in' Captain on Nieuw Amsterdam (he is not routinely on the ships) and he made a number of annoucements that other bridge officers were driving.... The only reason we found it remarkable is we know this happens often as this is how they learn but we've never heard Captains make announcements about it.

Seems this might be a new feature in Captains' "From the Bridge' Announcements.

With this in mind, seems I haven't yet 'found' a HAL female Chief Officer but I think there is one. I'm interested enough I'll keep asking. :)

In 2010, the first officer on the Volendam Trans Pacific crossing was a young New Zealand lady (Catherine) who probably will be a Chief Officer in the fleet by now.
Someone here on CC had posted a photo of her, I have had an unsuccessful search for the thread.

Aha....... I suspected Volendam so I think you have found 'my' mystery Chief Officer. Thank you. :) Now I have a better idea where to look.

Seems as though HAL is having some ladies work their way to be a captain.

OOPS.

Apologies to Catherine.
Checked my diary for that cruise, she is Catherine Williams.
Copper John had posted a message here about Veendams new Chief Officer, back in August 2010, asking is she the first HAL female Chief Officer?
The photo showed her with 4 stripes on her sleeve.

The photo I saw was Four Sripes and a Loop........
Four stripes (gold on with white) could be Hotel Manager.

Women are really advancing.

We had women pilots on both of flights coming home in December.

The photo shows four gold stripes with a gold loop above.

I just searched for "Veendams new chief officer", the thread appeared, sorry, but I don't know how to do the link.

Indeed it is remarkable, Judy...that a Captain or someone at the helm would refer to it as "driving" the ship when, in actuality, the proper nautical term is "at the helm" of the ship.

Akin to those who say "parking the ship" rather than "docking the ship" in port! lol!

If indeed, there is a female in command of a ship. What's the difference? I've taken many flights with a female Captain. We made it to our destination.

Indeed, in casual social conversation, a Captain or two has been known to use those expressions. ;) :D

Well, it does get us off the other important topics, like smoking, dress codes, tipping and most importantly, cabana choices!:D:D:D;)

finally, finally, HAL has caught up with Cunard :):)

It's all good as far as I am concerned. the best Hotel Manager I saw on a HAL ship was a woman (not because she was, but because of how she did her job)

On our recent Amsterdam cruise, the S.E.H. Officer was a woman and she was listed on the Cruise Log. Can't remember the number of stripes.

The humorous part about this above old thread is reading everyone complimenting John on his avatar with his wife and his current one is one of his many years ago with his police dog. :D
