We're doing the Tampa to San Diego Panama Canal cruise on April 16 and wondered if anyone could tell us whether our Canadian (Rogers-ATT) cell phone would work in Mexican Riviera ports such as Cabo San Lucas and Mazatlan. And if they do, does the Mexican telephone company charge outrageous long distance fees that would defeat the benefit of using the phone to call home?

Talk to your service provider. Every phone and every provider is different.

there are extended services you can get from your cell provider to cover Mexico when you go on vacation.

Following up on dakrewer's advice, I went to my supplier's web site and saw that their agreement with a Mexican company provides for service to US or Canada at the rate of $2.98 a minute. While that's a lot cheaper than the $10 plus a minute for satellite service on the ship, it strikes me as still pretty expensive -- about $9 for the standard three minute call.

On the other hand, I've never travelled outside Canada or the US with a cell phone so maybe this is just the cost of doing business...

T-mobile is 1.49 per minute to use your mobile in Mexico. Just be sure you set your phone up to roam in Mexico.

I usually get better reception outside the US, than inside the US since the rest of the world is much more reliant on mobile communication than the US.
