Is there wifi on HAL ships? We're sailing on the Zuiderdam.

Yes. Many, many discussions about it here on the board. And it is not free.

Thanks. This is perhaps naive, but we use 3G when wifi is unavailable. Is that a possibility onboard, or wishful thinking?

Turn off your 3G. Use your Wifi.

A little off topic, but I was wondering if it is possible use a memory stick on the computers on the ships?

A little off topic, but I was wondering if it is possible use a memory stick on the computers on the ships? No. The USB ports are inaccessible. Even if they were accessible what could you do with it? There is no software other than that used for accessing the internet.

ok thank you. I thought perhaps I prepare a message and then just copy it and send it.

ok thank you. I thought perhaps I prepare a message and then just copy it and send it.Do you mean a message written before boarding? You can send it to yourself from home and just forward it (or edit and forward it) to others once you are on board.

I just typed up a report on my laptop. I cannot e-mail the report direct from my laptop, so I sent it to a memory stick. Then I went to my desk computer and e-mailed it from the memory stick. I have read where e-mails have been prepared in advance so as to save time doing it on the computers on the ship. I thought maybe this was how they did it. But if there are no USB ports to connect to, then it cannot be done. There must another way. ???

There must another way. ???Most people can email things (with attachments) from their laptops using the ship's wifi. I write my emails off-line while on the ship using Windows Live Mail. Why can't your laptop do email?

I vaguely recall someone reporting emailing some legal documents by giving a memory stick to someone at the front desk. Can't recall any details, though. Maybe that was a fax.

Maaaaaaaaaaaybe you could talk the Internet Manager into emailing it for you. Or maybe someone in your CC Roll Call group is bringing a laptop that could do it for you. I would! :)

Or maybe you could send it from a port cybercafe.

It is not connected correctly to an e-mail address or whatever they call it in computer language. I have asked my computer helpers to fix it for me and so far they have not. this is a new toy for me and I am trying to learn. I am thinking about bringing it with me on our next cruise.

If you want to compose emails offline and then go online to email them, you will need to bring your own laptop, and learn how to connect it to the ship's wifi. (The Internet Manager or the staff that teaches the computer classes can help you with this.) Onboard WiFi is VERY slow; that's not HAL's fault - they have to use a satellite connection most of the time because of the distance from any land-based transmitter. Also, strength of the WiFi signal varies in different parts of the ship. Your 3G may work in port if it is a US port - e.g., if you are going to Alaska - but check with your 3G carrier for where they provide service, and costs.

We are just off the Eurodam and had a great wifi experience. I did not expect that based on previous posts. I teach online and have to be online at least 5 of 7 days. I purchased their $100 package. We were in SS 6077 which is not too far from midship. I had 2 bars until I shoved a washcloth under the door so I could get to 4 bars with the door partially open. System was fast and I was a happy camper:)
