View Full Version : My Ryndam review

I had the pleasure of sailing on the Ryndam Western Caribbean 8-15 January and thought I'd share some impressions.

I chose an inside midship cabin 778 on deck 4/A deck both for its location and value and was happy with the choice as it was a comfortable cabin for a solo traveller. I'd splurged and had a mini-fridge put in the rooms for my pop & beer and it came in handy, though might not do it again if I sailed on Ryndam again. The fit & finish was fine and I actually really liked the shower which was a good size and appreciated not having to stand in a tiny tub. Since I bought a Thermal Suite week pass having a tub to soak in wasn't needed in the cabin.

The two comments about the cabin were that one of the feet of the mini-fridge was missing causing it to tip forward every time you opened the door almost spilling out all the contents so searching for something the right side used the little soap cake from the bathroom and it fit well. The soap wasn't replaced the rest of the week so maybe there's a soap quota. :D Also the little towel you place on the floor to step on when exiting the shower appeared and disappeared over the week.

Some comments on CC had been made about the AC not working and the cabins getting warm to hot and I had a little LL Bean digital alarm clock with me that has a thermometer and embarkation day started at a perfect 72F before rising to a little warm 78F mid-way through the cruise. It was not uncomfortable and only stayed at that temp. one afternoon & evening when I was in & out so wasn't a huge issue and I'll take a few degrees warmer than cooler, though that could be on account I'm a Canadians escaping the cold winter weather. ;)

I really enjoyed my Thermal Suite and was glad I splurged on the unlimited weekly $99 pass as I had planned on buying at least one day pass which are $40 so not much more for the duration. It's smaller than I'd seen Eurodam and some of the tiled loungers were cooler than I like but most times I had the place to myself and found one lounger that was warmer so the experience overall was very positive. The spa staff were all very friendly and started using my name on day two or three which I always appreciate.

I did the Canaletto the first night and had a nice meal with superb service from some very friendly staff. I enjoyed it so much I made a point on making reservations for the last night to dine there again. The Lido was a stop for a few evening meals as after shore excursions I wanted something filling and quick versus the MDR. I found the food quality very good and the staff attentive and pleasant. I also tried the PG one night and the Lobster mac & cheese was excellent. Having taken part in a champagne tasting class by the sommelier Ron I tried another glass in the PG and it really went well with the meal. I think I'm hooked on the bubbly. :D I did do the room service for breakfast once ahead of an early morning shore excursion and it arrived right at the start of the designated time block and the food was hot and cooked well so was appreciated.

I didn't take in the nightly entertainment preferring instead to catch the piono man, ironically another Canadian, or the guitar player, Dough, who played late afternoons in Mix. I spent a fair bit of time watching NFL playoffs and just hanging out in mix and quite enjoyed the laid back atmosphere. The bartenders, especially Ronnie, were always happy and chatting up the crowd and extending a warm welcome. I also did the beer tasting and for 4 glasses to sample for $12 thought it a great value.

The ports of call were all excellent save for an intense downpour in Costa Maya. The snorkeling in Roatan was stellar and saw lots of lobsters but had to leave them be as we were in a warine preserve. I did zip line in Belize and as it was inland got to see some of the countryside before taking part in this fun excursion. The Key West visit to the Hemingway House & Museum was also a highlight.

The first few days I woke myself early to do what I really enjoy about cruising which is walk the deck at sunrise. There's nothing like walking the promenade deck to see a full moon fade into a stunning red & pink sunrise as we were pulling into Belize at slow speed with barely a wisper of a breeze and a sea as calm as a lake. I'd much rather get my exercise this way than pounding a threadmill but to each their own I suppose.

The Ryndam does have it's eccentricities like the mismatched carpets on the landings and stairs or the worn brass railings in the elevator but I found those things had absolutely zero impact on my enjoying my holiday so just went with the flow. I can see now why so many here like the Ryndam as it's a wonderful intimate ship and I could easily see myself sailing her again one day. I chose this sailing largely for its itinerary but wound up liking the ship more than I thought I might so in terms of a relaxing holiday with enough interests to take part in it exceeded my expectations. :)

We did this same itinerary on the Ryndam in October of '10, and loved every minute ... our favorate cruise to date. We too loved the piano bar and hanging out in the Mix:)

T Cook, thanks for the fine review! Glad you liked the Ryndam. We were on her in July 2009 and had a wonderful time. We liked the warm, friendly feeling she exuded. Our favorite parts were the excellent teak promenade deck, the best Pinnacle Grill we have seen, the cozy and inviting showroom and the incredible Explorations Cafe. Good job on the review!

Thanks for taking the time to do a review, glad you enjoyed your cruise. Glad to hear your comments about the thermal suite, we have debated whether to try that.

Thanks so much for your review. enjoyed reading it. Like Kirk, I have been debating on the thermal on the smaller ships. Sounds like you think it's worthwhile. Thanks again and welcome home:D

Was happy to hear that you had a good cruise on the MS Ryndam. We sure enjoyed our sailing on Her in Dec. 2010. Thanks for taking the time and effort in sharing your cruise experience.

Will you please post his name? Also, do you know how long he'll be aboard?

How was the motion on the ship. We are sailing on her next month and my wife is prone to motion sickness. Although Bonine if taken prior to rough seas usually does the trick.

Thanks for your review. We're sailing on the Ryndam in April. Would like to know more about getting a fridge in the cabin, can that be reserved in advance?

Thanks for your review. We're sailing on the Ryndam in April. Would like to know more about getting a fridge in the cabin, can that be reserved in advance?Yes - in fact it should be done in advance, as availability is limited. Call Ship Services, 800-541-1576. $2 per day.

If you have any cabin with a balcony (i.e., BC and above) they are already there.

Thanks for your review. DH and I will be doing the same itinerary on the Ryndam in March and it was great to hear good things.

Thanks, again.

Thank you for a nice review on this fine "S" Class ship. I had several nice cruises on this ship in the early part of the last decade. I always enjoyed my cruises on this wonderful ship.

Will you please post his name?

He's listed in the "Explorer" only as Piano Man Dr. Boogie but didn't catch his real name if he mentioned it.

Also, do you know how long he'll be aboard?

Sorry, no.

How was the motion on the ship.

It was fine the whole cruise up to Costa Maya the 2nd last night when it got a little rougher, though I never felt a thing that night and slept like a baby and that's only what I heard the next morning at breakfast from a few people who said they felt it. Luckily I am hardly ever bothered by any motion and once asleep am usually out for the duration. Cabin 778 was directly midship so that might've had a little to do with it but I got such super sleep the whole week it was very nice.

It took a little getting used to some things like a separate Crow's Nest & Explorations Cafe but I suppose some might like them that way so it's not necessarily a good vs. bad thing, just different.

I liked the day-of-the-week carpets in the elevators and they drew a few comments and laughs from riders.

I do wish cruisers would learn to look before pivoting 360 degrees in the Lido as I almost wound up wearing what I was carrying a few times thanks to the absent minded who suddenly alter course without regard to others.

Also to the gentleman who grumped aloud to his wife feet away from my lounger in Explorations Cafe that he couldn't reach the bookcase directly beside me all you had to do was ask politely and I would've stood up to allow you to look at the books you sought.

Those last two comments aren't meant to be read that there were lots of grumps on board as there surely wasn't, but there were a few as there invariably are anywhere I suppose.

Thanks for your review! Glad that your enjoyed you cruise on the MS Ryndam. I hope to sail on her one day. Sounds like you enjoyed the TS! I like it too. Although not quite like the hydropool suite, it's still a very nice place of relaxation. Crazy I know but any TS on any HA ship is my favorite part of cruising.

Thanks for your Ryndam review. We're looking for a Caribbean cruise next fall on a smaller HAL ship. It looks like Ryndam is about the only S Class operating out of Florida...except for two or three Maasdam cruises from FLL.

Since we've taken these already, looks like we'll book our first cruise on Ryndam next December.

Thanks again.

It was a nice review. We were on Dec 26th cruise and had wonderful weather and calm seas.
We found the cabin too cold and finally found that the control was wired the wrong way. Once husband figured that out we were confortable.
Our cruise the lobster was only chunks made with a cream sauce and put back into the shell. No such think as steak and lobster.

for hot food better stick to the Lido, as I found most meals for me were luke warm in the dining room. The Mariner luncheon was awful. Eating in the dining room at lunch time would been much better.

All in all it wasn't all that bad, and would still go HAL again.

Thank you for your review of the Ryndam. We love the Maasdam and the Caribbean itinerary we've done on her...most recently the cruise that disembarked yesterday.

We're booked on the Ryndam next January on their "new" 14 day itinerary.

We've never cruised on a ship that combined the Explorations Cafe with the Crow's Nest...but then, we've only sailed on the Maasdam and Noordam.

I should add I quite enjoyed Tampa itself a great deal and the Hyatt Regency downtown proved a good hotel for the dollar for 2 nights pre-cruise. There are enough restaurants within walking distance and it's quite close to the HAL pier and attractions like the Tampa Bay Times Forum where I caught an NHL hockey game after disembarkation and the nearby Florida Aquarium.

Not sure if I'd do this itinerary again soon but maybe one day though wouldn't hesitate to sail on Ryndam again. :)

Thank you for your review since I just booked Ryndam for 2013. And, thanks for the info on the hotel.

Sheila, I know the Eurodam and the Nieuw Amsterdam have Explorations and Crow's Nest together.Personally, I don't like it.

So do three of the Vistas. I don't care for the arrangement, either. I much prefer the set-up on the Noordam, and all the other ships.

Okay, thanks. He'll be gone by the time I board. Hopefully, he'll be replaced by someone else I can enjoy.
