Can you pay for an upgrade at the pier, balcony to suite, ect. like you can on
Royal Caribbean, on Holland America or does Holland America give all the rooms away by upgrading like Princess does?

They'll be delighted let you pay for an upgrade. Of course, rare exceptions beside, you'll pay at or near brochure rate. There are few if any distress sales at the pier.:(

The Caribbean ships are sailing full lately and most people are reporting that HAL has been posting a sign "No Cabins Available". That was our case back in Feb.

On our last few cruises on HAL, the only cabins that were left were the lowest priced cabins.

I sail tomorrow. Perhaps I can pay for a downgrade at the pier.;)

"Honey, guess what. You don't have to worry about the sunlight coming through the verandah doors waking you up in the morning."

We were offered an upgrade to a suite for $300/pp from a Cat D less than a week from sailing - but the day of sailing, the offer was no longer available...

When my parents booked a cruise to panama canal there was only inside left. At the pier they were able to get 1 of 3 verandahs but paid a hefty price for it! Good Luck on getting an upgrade and I hope its a good price for you, dreams do come true! :)

Don't hold your breath! I wonder how it might be asking HAL or your TA just a few days from departure if there were any upgraded cabins available? The eleventh hour seems like it would be the time they're firming up everything and getting their manifests ready.

Last summer, I was traveling with friends on the Zuiderdam. They had booked an outside cabin since the Verandas on this sailing were too steep for them.

After they were onboard, they had second thoughts. They really treasured their time out on their balcony and were sorry now that they didn't have one. They went to the purser's desk and just by sheer luck there happened to be one Veranda available, even though the sailing had been sold out for weeks prior. Apparently, this one came available as the result of a last minute emergency cancellation.

But, if they wanted it ... they had to move on it immediately. They ran up to take a quick look at it, found it adequate, and upgraded immediately. According to them, it only ran them about $300 total for the upgrade. I don't think this was a suite, though ... just a standard stateroom with a veranda tacked on. The actual stateroom wasn't much larger than my inside, if I recall correctly.

Blue skies ...
