Hello,
First time cruiser here. Going on the Eurodam 1/28. I am bringing a portable clothes steamer with me but was wondering if the staterooms have irons? :)

There are no irons in any staterooms -- fire hazzard.
The Eurodam does not have any self-service laundries either.
You have a choice of "laundry by the bag" -- usually $20 for a 7 day cruise. As much as you can stuff into a bag.
OR
Unlimited laundry for the week - about $49. Send out as much as you want.
Everything comes back washed and nicely ironed.
DO NOT bring your steamer -- another fire hazzard.
You can hang items in the bathroom while you shower to get out wringles.
Or you can bring with you Downy Wrinkle Free spray.

Passengers are not permitted to bring either steamers or clothes irons. Please leave them home as they are a real fire hazard on a ship.
Pack you hanging clothes on dry cleaner hangers covered with dry cleaner bags and you shouldn't need to iron. I rarely need to have things pressed when I pack jackets, dresses and such this way.

Besides, the ambient humidity on any ship takes any wrinkles out pretty well. I've lugged the same bottle of Downy Wrinkle Release with me on many cruises (16 to be specific) and it's still full. And no, we don't ever look like wrinkled schlumps!;)

On the ships with a laundry, is there an iron and board in the laundry rooms?

Yes, there is. Those ships would be the:
Prinsendam
4 S-class ships---Statendam, Maasdam, Ryndam, Veendam
4 R-class ships---Rotterdam, Amsterdam, Volendam, Zaandam
The remaining ships in the fleet---4 Vista and 2 Signature ships---don't have them at all.

I have a silk dress I planned to wear on formal night that wrinkles at the thought of being packed. I wasn't planning on bringing a garment bag, but now I think I might have too. Has anyone ever checked one of those really sturdy type garment bag with success? I don't want to give up my carry on for a garment bag carry on. I have a very sturdy garment bag. Do you think checking it through will be ok? The only problem with sending it through laundry is the first time I sent this particular dress to the cleaners, it came back ruined (colors bled) and I actually had to return it to the store to get another one. I don't want to run that risk again!
Ann
P.S.. I've heard that various things are contraband on the ship....do they actually inspect your luggage?

Seriously, this doesn't need to go in a special luggage bag. Wrap it in tissue paper (in between) and then to be safe if you want with drycleaner bags outside. it will be fine. If it is at all wrinked, just hang it up in the bathroom and the wrinkles should drop out (it won't get wet so it won't hurt the silk). If you are going to send something like this to ship's laundry (or any laundry), then pay to have it dry cleaned and you should be fine. JMO:)
As to your ps - I wouldn't dream of bringing anything on I shouldn't and yes, if they miss it in inspection then the steward will catch it (I Hope - there's nothing worse than a fire at sea on a ship)

No fire on ship at sea! Just curious. I didn't know they inspected your luggage. I'll just bring a different dress! Is there a list somewhere of what we can't bring on board? Can we bring curling irons and electric hair curlers?

Of course you can bring both :) there aren't too many things you can't bring actually - irons, steam irons those types of things are the fire hazards and verbotten. Curling irons, hair curlers - all that stuff you can bring with no issue. they don't use the same voltage or whatever the correct term is:D Have a great cruise, but I'd still take the dress if you want to wear it ;) Sounds like it is stunning:)
Seriously, I pack silk all the time and the wrinkles drop out in seconds - go for the gusto if you like it:)

You can send things to be pressed without having them cleaned.
Please, please, please, please, please don't bring an iron or a steamer. The wiring in your cabin can't handle the power draw. The danger of fire is too great.

As others have said, use tissue paper then place the silk garment in a dry cleaners bag to pack.
When you open your luggage in your cabin give your silk garment a good shake, before hanging.
Enjoy your cruise.

EVERY piece of luggage that is loaded on the ships is x-rayed. If they see something they question, they will hold the suitcase and contact you to come open the bag and they will confiscate banned items.

I'm sure it would be OK if you told everyone it was a musical instrument.:D
Please see the thread "bringing a musical instrument on board".

Leave the steamer at home. There have been enough fires on board ships. That's the reason you won't find an iron either.

I just checked out my handheld steamer....it is a 600 watt unit, much less than most hair dryers. Would that really cause a power draw so significant that it could start a fire? My electric hair curlers are also 600 watts. My hairdryer is 1600 watts. I understand that there are hairdryers on board, but having long thick hair, I prefer mine.
Please be kind..just trying to understand. I use this steamer on our RV under generator power with no problems. It is not a huge unit..just a little handheld 10" unit.

All you really need to understand is that steamers and irons are not allowed on HAL ships. People who have the right to make that decision, have made that decision.

Please understand -- we don;t make the rules -- HAL does -- no irons -- no steamers.
Have you ever been on a ship when there was a fire?
We have - several times.
The dryers on HAL aren't 1600 watts -- you are going to blow a fuse!!

just trying to find the logic of hair curlers of 600 watts being ok but steamers of 600 watts not ok.

My guess is that it is easier to say "No steamers" to everyone then having to discern what the wattage is on each type of steamer that someone may bring on board.
You're right, your steamer probably wouldn't cause a issue with the lower wattage. But we all have to (should) abide by the rules of the cruise line...HAL has a zero tolerance for any steamer or iron, and they can confiscate it and return it to you at the end of your cruise.

Our is not to discover the logic (or lack thereof) - our is to obey the rules. Anyway, you will be fine without a steamer. As someone has already observed, the humidity aboard a ship does wonders for wrinkles.

I really don't see the logic that a steamer would be more of a fire hazard than say, a blow dryer, a curling iron, or a straightner, which I'm sure many, many people have brought on board. I'm just making an observation, so please don't bash.
But, with that said, I was in a deluxe suite and was lucky enough to have free laundry and pressing, so I sent most things to the laundry.
But there was an occasion where I didn't have something pressed that I wanted to wear. Yes I'm a bit anal, and like my clothes freshly pressed.....sorry.....LOL
But what I did, which worked great, was spray the item with some Downy Wrinkle Release then I placed the blow dryer on the inside of the garment and it came out really good, imo just as good as steaming.

Time to forget "personal logic" and just follow the rules. They are made for a reason and no need to try and circumvent them

No bashing here. It's just that the need to "see the logic" is a distractor. No one needs to see the logic of the rule; they have to know, and obey, the rule.
It's as if they are saying that if/when they see the logic, they can decide whether or not they want to go along with the rule. And if they don't see the logic, they won't go along with the rule.
The people who get to decide these sorts of things, have decided these sorts of things. Then they made safety rules about them.
There's nothing more to understand.

Thank you for just the mild bashing! I am planning to buy the week long laundry service and I will just hope for the best. And I will leave the hair dryer behind as well. I may be a tad obsessive about pressed clothing and well coiffed hair, but I am a strict rule follower, however logical I try to be! What a conundrum!

emailingann, no need to worry, they supply blowdryers in the cabins, at least they did on the Nieuw Amsterdam

Just for the record, I said I didn't understand the logic, that doesn't translate to not following the rules. I didn't bring a travel iron, or a steamer with me, I did follow the rules.
I'm just wondering how you were able to type while wagging your finger at me. Geeez and I thought I was anal.
