I have read somewhere that the Maasdam cruise to the Southern Caribbean can be a rough ride in December. Right now I am looking at either an inside or outside cabin on one of the lower decks. Should I consider one at the front or back of the ship? Does anyone have any particular recommendations? Thanks.

If you are worried about rough weather, pick a cabin midships.

Midships...and it doesn't matter if it's on a lower deck?

The closer to the middle---in every direction---the smoother the ride. That's front to back, side to side, and top to bottom.
If I were you I'd go with a mid-ship inside on Lower Promenade or Main deck.
I'm partial to J-345 (assuming the same numbering as on the other S-ships), myself. It's just aft of the atrium on Lower Promenade. Very central. Very easy access to the great outdoors when you need fresh air.

Midships, definitely, and the lower rather than higher, if indeed you are worried about heavy seas.
The S class of ship has very good stabilizers. I wouldn't worry about rough waters.
Have fun.

Ok thanks all for the advice...just have to wait for awhile now to see if I am on strike in September before booking this thing. :(

Don`t fool yourself.. You will have a rough ride out of Norfolk in the winter months. Stabilizers or not--it is rough. Just see remarks by recent cruises from Norfolk. Pick a mid-ships, lower deck. I personally experienced a very rough trip in January 05.

We just got back from sailing the Southern Caribbean on the Maasdam on 3/10 from Norfolk. Both there and back, we had at least one day of rough seas (much more on the way down). Apparently, the Atlantic can be that way and from talking to many passengers, it has little to do with time of year. Some people had gone down in Fall and Winter and had calm seas. You have to be prepared for either and convince yourself that you will have fun regardless. Personally, I prefer mid ship, though if you are very sensitive, you may feel it no matter where you are. We used bonine and my daughter used the arm bands. If you plan on taking the sea sick pills, do it before it gets rough and don't stay in your cabin! Also, make sure you have something in your stomach, even if you think you won't be able to stand it. Light meals help a lot. Fresh air and the company of others is very helpful, too. Beyond that, a good attitude is the only other cure. Enjoy!!:)

We were on A-deck, cabin 728. It was very convenient to the elevators and we felt hardly any motion. The only issue -- and it happened sporadically so it wasn't major -- was that we heard a loud buzzing noise from below when we pulled into port.

I was looking at a K or M inside cabin, A or Main Deck, for the trip and from the look of the deck plans, both of those are midships so I guess things will be fine.
