View Full Version : My comments about fleet expansion

I’m delighted so many of you are asking questions. I will to try to answer all of them during the week so please be patient if you don’t see a response right away to something you asked. As I said earlier, since so many questions are similar and deal with the same subjects, I have been aggregating them.

First let me respond to those of you who have asked if Azamara has plans to expand its fleet. By the way, I like that question. It shows that you like what you are getting from Azamara and want more of it.

There was a post on this question by linda47 who added that if we expand the fleet will we do so with a larger ship? We like the size of our ships just fine and apparently so do you. In my view our parent company Royal Caribbean Cruises Limited (RCL), has the most popular, elegant and entertaining large ships in the world. These are the Royal Caribbean International ships called the Allure of the Seas and Oasis of the Seas. They are simply magnificent, especially for us maritime admirers. Having stated this, they are not remotely like Azamara Club Cruises. We are simply in a different class serving a different market.

But let me get on with this question of fleet expansion. When I joined this fledgling cruise line in 2010 several people immediately asked me if I planned any additional tonnage and I told them that I didn’t join Azamara with the intention of it remaining a two-ship fleet. I’m sure you could ask any cruise line president if they wanted to add tonnage and they would all say they want to expand. It figures. But expanding the Azamara fleet isn’t as simple as flipping a light switch. We need to be prudent, perform our due diligence and satisfy the management of our parent company and its shareholders that we are on the right track. I’m telling you here that I believe we are on the right track and a day doesn’t go by without my thinking about expansion. There are sound business reasons for our expansion as well as the sound guest reasons that many of you expound. But while I’m mentally planning our expansion, I’m also working hard at making the Azamara cruise experience the absolute best it can be. I would appreciate hearing from you on what you think should be in a new Azamara Club Cruises vessel. Why not help me dream a bit?

But more to the point of this question, all of us at Azamara are on the same page here. We are striving toward achieving such striking success that additional vessels will be possible. And I’m confident that our senior management and shareholders will support that goal at the right time. When it’s the right time, it will be the right time. If that sounds a bit Zen, consider this--- we want to continue to achieve successes in profitability--- because that’s the name of the game in a public company. We want to increase our customer base and exceed our guests’ satisfaction.

One last comment on this subject: Don’t succumb to rumors. When I can honestly tell you something about fleet expansion I will do so.

You asked us to help you dream well in my one experience on Azamara so far I think the ship was bigger then I expected with space very well layed out. I was constantly surprised on how much was on Journey and never felt crowded. The layout works so please keep that in mind whenever you do a new build

1) Understanding when the ships were built that was the look and feel with the faux fire places etc of that period. I hope a new ship can still retain some of that(no fireplaces please) but with update software. I like what Journey did with the new shops with the updated look.

2)Bathroom larger on a new ship

3) Casino could be a little smaller and maybe use one side for the casino and maybe a jazz club or piano bar on the other side. Casino was hardly used on our cruise and thought it was wasted space. Especially since you are at port so long.

4) I thought the Cabaret Lounge should be more of a little theater or show bar with better seating and staging.

5) I like the Discovery restaurant but it also had a somewhat outdated feel. I think there needs to be more of a separation between stations it just feels like one large room instead of a warm inviting restaurant.

Thank you for listening and also taking the time to answer our questions it saids so much about who you are as a company.

As long as we're dreaming....
1)a ship with enough draft (remember those deep "V" hulls?) that it is truly ocean-going (having sailed through 50' waves in the Pacific on a deep V hull years ago, I'm hesitant with the newer, shallow-draft ships that actually corkscrew through the water; and the Costa Concordia's listing over doesn't reinforce my faith in shallow drafts)
2)a pool and/or spa on the fantail--where the views leaving a port and at sea are wonderful (Windows Cafe being one of my favorite places on the Journey)
3)a real promenade deck (I know, those balcony cabins rake in the money, but part of the reason to take a cruise is to be on deck!)
4)a cabin that has more than 18"-2' at the foot of the bed to walk and a mirror one can stand in front of to check one's clothes (at the foot of the bed and no place to stand--except on the bed--doesn't work--had a balcony cabin on Journey fitting this description--only downside to an otherwise nicely decorated/designed space)
5) and don't make it bigger--love the ambience of smaller and the bigger ships ruin their ports (sometimes there are more people on the ship than there are in the port!)
Thanks for the opportunity to dream...

Dear Rumtoddy and dfishner,

Keep the dream thoughts coming. Any additional thoughts about a new build for Azamara is very much appreciated. Your absolutely delighting me with your creativity.

My wife Heather and myself have been on Quest twice and in between we tried out Oceania's new Marina. It is a beautiful ship and the food is first class , but we were amazed by the number of comments from guests about minor flaws , ranging from the showers , to lights in bathrooms that "cooked" the toiletries , to the inability to take photographs from the public decks , to the ludicrous layout of the piano bar with zero sightlines. When we travelled on Celebrity Eclipse we were very impressed by the clever design touches , so we hope you will use the same team of female advisers. We thought Marina was too big , and that new Azamara ships should still be around 700 passengers after all no-one else is building that size ships.
Congratulations on the good work so far

Imagine my shock when I saw my user name in your response. Made me feel important! :D

One suggestion when a new build is done is to put drawers (at least one) in the night table. The lack of a drawer was a surprise on my first Azamara cruise. On the second cruise, we brought baskets so that we could pull them out to find the 'stuff' that always winds up on the night table drawer.

Another one is to add outlets behind the beds. Both my travel companion & I now need to use C-PAP machines and on every cruise the cabin steward has to get extension cords which then have to go across the floor to the other side of the cabin. Even tho they tape them down, this is a safety hazard. And, on my most recent cruise on RCI, we overheard many people talking about their C-PAP machines. I think that as we age, more of us are experiencing sleep apnea.

On the aft cabins, should have clear (not sure what you call them) barriers to the sea. Currently they are concrete and you can't see the ocean when sitting down. One of my favorite things is to sit on the balcony & watch the water.

Of course, the showers could be a bit bigger if at all possible.

Thank you for answering all these questions and asking for more suggestions.

Larger bathrooms, perhaps with a glass door shower, would go a long way toward making even the smallest staterooms more comfortable.

Larger bathrooms for non suites
Remove the bath tubs in the Continental Suites (they are small anyway) and make a big walk in shower with amazing shower heads
I love Mosaic Cafe as a place for piano bar entertainment at night but it does not work when it is also a thoroughfare so maybe a move around for that if you can
Make the aft bar a more appealing place to spend the evening, perhaps as a place for an after dinner drink as on the Celebrity Sunset Bars on the Solstice class, does not need to be a lot bigger, just change some of the seating
Agree with others, reduce the casino size - your cruises are about port immersion so gambling is not a big thing for guests - being radical, maybe even remove it
Use the space for a nice lounge bar, the Discoveries Bar can feel like a Dining room waiting room and not necessarily where you go for an after dinner drink
