I'm a cruise virgin and I didn't realize that I needed to reserve the HMC cabana early....I thought we did that on the ship on the first day. So I "wait listed" yesterday for my cruise on 1/28/12. Is there a remote chance of getting one?

There's always a chance. :o
Even if you don't get a cabana, HMC is wonderful. You will love it....with a cabana or without.

I wouldn't feel bad if I were you and there's still a chance you'll get one after all. It's really hard to tell about the cabanas. On our cruise last March we had a full ship, absolutely incredible weather at HMC, and only three cabanas were rented....go figure. :)

I just don't understand why people love these so much. They seem so small and not worth the money IMO.

Oh well.....count us among the misguided but we always get one. :)

I agree with you.

They don't interest us at all.

Years ago when there were only 4 of them -- offered to suites only - $50!! -- it was worth it. But we didn't spend much time on the island -- so not really for us.

Some people love them -- we are no longer interested in them.

Hope your wish comes true.

I agree.
We've been in the cabanas and it was fine but we're also more than fine on our two lounge chairs in the sand and walking to the barbeque for our lunch.

Every once in a while, I'll ask DH if he wants me to reserve a cabana for our next cruise and I always get a shrug and 'if you want' for an answer. Neither of us care particularly so why bother.

We always go ashore and get a cabana. Typically we invite another couple to at least visit though our last cruise on the Maasdam it was the very first morning and we didn't know anybody on the cruise well enough. We would have invited our table mates but one couple had one and the other couple weren't getting off the ship. Turned out to be just a glorious day, the best of probably seven or eight visits, and we thoroughly enjoyed the cabana.

I've never done the cabana - but our roll call is doing the Oasis:D so, we are all really splurging :) I'll let you know what we all thought when we get back:)

I'm so jealous! Our roll call also rented out the Oasis but due to high winds we never got to the island. I hope you have better luck.

Chances of obtaining a cabana from the waitlist are very remote. If you snooze, you lose. Many years ago, before we started reserving cabanas. DH decided we should have one.

We were waitlisted. Much to our surprise, a few days into the cruise we were notified one was available. So, on rare occasions is does happen.

We learned a valuable lesson. Reserve early.

Thanks - we can only do what we can do. We have had a high rate of being jinxed as to getting to HMC so I am guessing this time should be a charm (I hope).

I usually book our cruises ten months in advance and if the itinerary includes HMC, I book the Grey cabana then and there. We just love the peace and quiet on that end of the beach.;)

We always get a clamshell - $15 for the 2 of us. Gives us as much protection that we need. As far as whether you might get one, I think it would also depend if there are other ships at HMC the same day you are. Good luck

Amen. And for only a few hours, too. We tried one once because (mostly) everyone on this board raves about them, but we thought it was a waste of money.

Well, Typhoon1, I guess we know who we won't have any competion with to get one next time. Which one should I get???:D:D:D

We love the cabanas, even for just the two of us. If we've met someone we particularly enjoy, we'll invite them to stop by - it's such a nice, private, place for visiting.

Funny story here ... a year ago, we invited 3 CC friends to stop by. Two did, but the third did not. We saw him at dinner and mentioned how we'd missed him. Turns out he thought he HAD seen us, but was a bit confused about which cabana we were in, and had visited with those in another - and ended up in the hammock right outside that one for hours. He said they were really nice ... made him feel right at home. :)

emailingann, we're on Eurodam at the same time. Our group of 4 have the eggshell cabana (halfway down the beach, at the second set of washrooms).

If you don't get lucky with the wait list, stop by for a soda or glass of wine.

And do stop by the Piano Bar on Sunday, 11 a.m. - first full day at sea. The roll call has an informal Meet and Greet then.

We reserved a clamshell for when we are there. How do they work? Do you have to take a ticket or something to show them onshore? Are they already set up or do they just hand you the shell and you put it up around the loungers?

Patricia - thanks so much...we will try to drop by both! I think I will rent a clamshell... is that what you call it? I'm sure that will be fine....I just want to be in that water ALL DAY LONG! :D

We booked ours 10 months out. I wouldn't start watching any later than that.

We have one booked for April and it was booked at least 10 months. I had been watching daily.

We rented the turquise cabana for our March cruise. Any thoughts on that particular cabana? I'm really looking forward to it only so we can have a little "space" to ourselves. I believe the cabanas also come with floats, right? I know my DB is looking forward to lying in the ocean on one of those. As for me, I'm happy with the occassional "dip" and then on to the lounge chair for a nice long read on the kindle!

They are all "down" when you arrive. Go to the location that you want and a crew member will come by and set it up for you. He will want to see your ticket for the clamshell.
