We are staying at the Holiday Inn, at the Pier in San Diego, a couple of nights before our cruise.
We would like to find some nice place to eat, close to the hotel, as we won't have a car.

Anthony's right next to the pier is one of the best Seafood places in the entire area!! It is right on the dock, well lit and wonderful!! Prices are extremely decent and large portions:)

There is a Ruth Chris next to the Holiday Inn, but my favorite restaurant is just 2 blocks from you. Just to the north of the train station and on the east side of it, is "Rainwater's on Kettner". I've never had a bad meal there.
The Fish House is just a few blocks south, just before Seaport Village...they are a fine place as well. Don't forget to visit the Gaslamp Quarter (50 restauants) and Little Italy (10-12 restaurants). All are within a mile of your hotel.
If you need to bring wine or champagne onboard with you, there is a Rite Aid store on Kettner and Ash (3 blocks from you) and they have reasonable prices and a nice selection.

Anthony's food is very greasy.

Ruth Chris -- steaks were tough for the high price you pay there.

The Fish house - we have eaten there quite a few times and were never disappointed. We have even gone there a couple of times for lunch and ate out on the deck watching the ferries, sailboats, navy ships. It just beyond the Midway.

We walk the couple blocks to Little Italy and eat at Filippi's. ALways great Italian and portions big enough to split and share different items.

Agree with Filippi's in litle Italy and with Anthony's -- Had their grilled shark special -- was wonderful

Inside the Holiday inn itself is an English pub. The Bangers and Mash and the Meatloaf were pretty good too

Peohe's is great. Take the ferry from near the Holiday Inn to Coronado. It's a pretty cheap ride.

Check out their website.

I could be wrong but didn't Rainwaters close a couple of years ago? Thought Anthony's was so so, same as the Holiday Inn. Any time we were at Ruth Chris we had an excellent steak. If you should get to Coronado try Shearwater at the Del

If you are going to be in San Diego for a few days then take the trolley to Café Coyote located in the Heart of Old Town. You can walk almost anywere you need to go. GasLamp Quarter, Seaport Village, Horton Plaza, and stop by Ralphs for Wine for your cruise. :D enjoy!

If by "trolley" you mean the hop on/off bus (which looks kind of like a trolley ) yes it gets you to lots of places and is well worth the money if you're only there for a day or two and are not renting a car.

We took the Old Town Trolley Tour (http://www.trolleytours.com/san-diego/old-town.asp#) a few years ago. Definitely worth the price! We got a 2-day pass and used it to go over San Diego. Loved Balboa Park & Coronado. We were there for a week and had rented a car but the trolley is so easy and informative. We used the trolley the first couple of days then went back to some of the places in the car so we'd have more time.

We took the SEAL tour too, but wasn't as impressed with it.

Try tripadvisor.com, they have always worked for us. Dinning reviews are written by the dinners themselves.

I thought about going on the trolley to get around, is this a good idea.Yes. Balboa Park has many nice museums plus the San Diego Zoo, one of the top zoos in the entire world.

Balboa Park Guide (http://www.balboaparkguide.com/)

San Diego Zoo (http://www.sandiegozoo.org/zoo/index.php)

When you talk about "the trolley" be aware that there are both

San Diego Tours | Old TownTrolley (http://www.trolleytours.com/san-diego/) (for tourist sightseeing)

and

San Diego Trolley (http://www.sdmts.com/trolley/trolley.asp) (basic transportation for getting around the city)

At the Holiday Inn, in the morning you can also take their free shuttle to Horton Plaza or the zoo or any of several other places. Just ask about it at the front desk when you check in.

We've taken the trolley tour of San Diego twice. It's a great way to see the city, and you can do it at your own pace.

How right you are. And Peohe's in Coronada and Ruth Chris are V E R Y pricey and really not worth it. The best part of Peohe's is the view.

Anthony's is good. Go there for lunch and have one of their "quick catches". Not expensive, really good food and nice view.

You are all so very helpful, thank you. Can't wait to visit San Diego, and our cruise.
