Formal wear for women on formal night is.....well, it's formal.
Many ladies wear long gowns, ball skirts with sequined/fancy tops. Many also wear knee length cocktail dresses. There is no such thing as too formal. Wear your dressiest and enjoy.
IMO, formal does not have to be uncomfortable. If your clothes fit you properly and you purchase carefully to what suits you, there is no reason you need to be uncomfortable when dressed for the evening.

Have you tried the new separates with fabrics that are approx. 95% nylon and 5% spandex. I have a long black skirt (elastic waist) and several fancy tops. I also have the matching black jacket and pair it with fancy beaded sleeveless shells (tank tops). Today I saw a black long "tank" dress of this fabric. Throw a beaded or fancy jacket over it and seemed like it would be a real "comfy" formal outfit. Just a thought.

I have two sequined stretchy jumpsuits which are dressy, comfortable and you can roll 'em up in a ball when you pack. They're from either Spiegel or Newport News.
