I was looking at the liquor you can purchase and have waiting in your room upon arrival....anyone know what size these bottles are? A bottle of crown is $42, not bad for a liter bottle....if that's the case....

Make sure you order it at sea (that way you don't pay the tax ;)) It will still be in your room when you arrive. They are on litre bottles as Mary Ellen said - and yes, for us in Canada, they are a decent price :)

sorry I wasn't clear - when you go online to order - you have two options - order to be delivered in your room upon embarkation or order to be delivered at sea. Depending upon the port you are leaving from (ie. Fort Lauderdale), taxes come into play. If you order it to be delivered 'at sea', there is no tax and the odds are it will be in your room.
so, you can order on line - requesting delivery at sea.
You can also order from room service on board - but make sure you are outside of the boundaries of the port (if the casino is open you are fine) and you won't be charged tax there either.:)

if you request deliver at sea, how long after you set sail (from NYC) would you receive it??

The reason you request the alcohol and Beverage cards to be delivered "At Sea" is to avoid Florida and New York State taxes.

It will be delivered to your room. There's no need to smuggle alcohol on board, HALs prices are quite competitive with any liquor store.

so is it best to order in advance before departing...or just add it to room service after the ship leaves Florida...?? Also can you order vodka with something other than tonic???

Well, I don't know if I'd agree with that-- those prices look like a significant (100%?) markup to what things sell for around where I live, and we're not known for cheap booze.
On the other hand, I don't begrudge them a markup, and it's only when you get to beer that the markup goes from about 100% to more like 300-400%.
Anyone know why beer drinkers get the short end of the stick? Wine can be brought on board in unlimited quantities, and liquor is available at expensive but not unreasonable prices, but beer has to bought onboard and the selection is very poor and overpriced.

we usually order in advance - if you don't need it for sail a way then just wait until you are out about 7 miles out (or when the casino is open) and you can order from room service with no tax. price is the same:)

some of the prices are ok, but COGNAC: HENNESSY VS $93.15??? this cost about 1/3 in liqour stores/total wine

Come to PA and you will find prices on alcohol quite high -- 5th's only -- as you can only buy alcohol in a State Store owned by the state's liquor control board.
No grocery stores sell alcohol, wine or beer.
Besides paying a state tax of 6%, we also pay 1% county tax and everyone pays 18% tax for the 1936 Johnstown flood.

I do the same thing, don't drink tonic with my vodka. What we do is order the bottle alone and then we order a soda card ($50 card for $25) and that is where I get my mixes from (usually ask for 6 at a time and bring them to the room) and my DW gets her diet coke.

Thanks to you and CC for the educational lesson!! Ive been in PA for 2 years and have never heard of this tax (despite having been to the Johnstown flood museum). I just read up on it. The laws were bad enough already without knowing that little hidden info

Even here in Europe (where alcohol is cheap) these are not a bad mark up. You must expect HAL, like any other business, to cover their costs and also to make a profit.
Where we live 1L Smirnoff Vodka is €10.99 ($14.50) : $27.60 on ship = 90% markup
Absolut is €14.86 ($20) : $32.20 on ship = 61% markup
We can buy a cheap, own brand, vodka for €5.35 ($7) but it is terrible

On my first HAL cruise I pre ordered a bottle of Stoli and, not really caring about the tax, ordered it for delivery in port. It was not in my cabin when we were allowed access, but was brought in soon thereafter. So next time I will request delivery at sea - maybe it will be there before I am!

That has happened a couple of times with us as well -- not in our cabin when we embarked even though we had requested delivery upon embarkation.
