I was going to put this under my Oslo question, but thought I should start a difference thread.

Has anyone had any experience staying at either the Rival (owned by Benny Andersson from ABBA), the Nordic Light or Nordic Sea in Stockholm?

The Stockholm hotels are all hideously expensive. I was looking at the SAS Radission Strand, but then came across some good reviews on these hotels. We are only staying one night in Stockholm.

Thanks.

We got a really good rate at the Sheraton Hotel & Tower. Anyone know anything about it?

Thanks

We stayed there before our Stockholm to Dover cruise last June. The Stockholm Sheraton has clean, modern rooms and because I am a Starwood Gold member we were upgraded to the concierge level where we met four other couples who were about to embark on the same Oceania cruise. It is conveniently located and we were able to walk to old town as well as to the City Hall from the hotel. We thought we got good value for the room. It is not five star but for the one night it was quite nice.

We also stayed at the Sheraton Stockholm for four days in 1999. It was just one block from the main shopping street (lined with perhaps more than a hundred shops), and a short taxi ride from everywhere. Another hotel right on this shopping street is the Hotel Sergel Plaza, which is more expensive. The Sheraton Stockholm was "typical" of a Sheraton and quite nice, while the Sergel Plaza might have more of a local Scandinavian flavour. The internet shows the Sheraton at 1100 kronas/night and the Sergel at 1800 kronas/night. Hope this helps.

The Nordic LIght and Nordic Sea are in the heart of the modern business district, near the railroad station and the Arlanda Express terminal. They're convenient if you need to get out of town early, but the neighborhood isn't much for atmosphere.

I stayed in the Diplomat last fall; it's a four-star hotel on the waterfront, and from it you can walk to most of the sights in Stockholm. I've reviewed the Diplomat and several other hotels at:

http://europeforvisitors.com/europe/countries/sweden/stockholm-hotels.htm

I've got some other articles on Stockholm, including tips (with links) on transportation and an article on Skansen, the world's first open-air museum, which I published just the other day. They're listed at:

Re hotels: However you make your decision, try to stay in a hotel near the water. Stockholm is a maritime city with a clean, beautiful, lively harbor, and it's delightful to see boats, ferries, etc. passing by whenever you step onto the sidewalk in front of your hotel. And if you don't mind splurging on a room overlooking the water, so much the better!

Hello Elin

To get back to the original question. When are you planning to stay at the Rival? I am staying there with my wife for 4 nights in early June for our wedding anniversary, so if you're going after that date I can fill in any details you might need about the property. In the meantime you could hold a room pending a decision. It has had good write ups in the UK press and TV though.

I have also stayed at the Sheraton which is closer to the old town but maybe not as charismatic as the Rival is supposed to be. Stockholm is beautiful, one of my two favourite cities in Europe and much underated by most people.

Hi Englishlee,

We are looking at end of August for a hotel in Stockholm. If you are there in June and if you could let me know how it is, that would be fabulous. I have read so many great reviews on the hotel (and it is the #1 hotel on Trip Advisor), that it does look interesting. It is more expensive then either the Nordic Light and Nordic Sea (which look very funky), but like these hotel, it is about a 10 minute walk.

Any information would be greatly appreciated! Do you know what their cancellation policy is? If you can cancel without penalty, I may hold a room there and await your review.

Thanks and congrats on the wedding anniversary!

OK Elin I'll do that. I can be a bit forgetful so if you email me at cga@fsmail.net anytime from 13th June onwards I'll be in a position to answer questions or give my opinion.

The cancellation without charge policy for my room is 6pm the day before arrival, I would imagine that it would be the same with yours if you book directly with the hotel, they seem very friendly and efficient.

I'm in your neck of the woods (almost) next week. In Halifax for a couple of days then Montreal for another couple of days then back home. Was hoping to get to see my friends in Kitchener and Waterloo but not this time unfortunately.

Speak to you in June if not before.
