Hello fellow cruisers! This thread has been started to give all of us a place to share our information about visiting New Orleans, LA! Royal Caribbean is returning to New Orleans as a departure port and I thought it would be a good idea to have a special place to go to discuss the ins and outs of visiting this unique city.

So please come and visit and read and share any of your thoughts! :)

If any cruisers have been to NOLA recently, what one thing did you do that you would consider a "must do"?

Our group will be in New Orleans 2-4 days after our cruise and would like tour info, hotel info and restaurant/food recommendations.

Thanks for any information that you share!:D

Hi Mary, I have not been to New Orleans yet but I am hoping to hear from people that have been there before and can give us good info the the City;)

We will be staying for 3 or 4 days after the cruise and hope to do some real good tours, if anyone can tell us about the tours they have been on that would be a help for us to choose one:cool:

Mary, thank you for getting this started and I hope we will get lots of people helping us with our visit to New Orleans:)

Hello, Carol and Carol! Good to see you.

Yes, tours are def on the list of "to do" things. Ghost Tour, Plantation Tour, Cemetery Tour, there are many vendors and tours to check out ~ but we do have a bit of time! I think we will not have such a rush for tours because we are staying after...

Also, does anyone know the name of that grocery store that makes the original muffalata?

Patrick and I visited this lovely city the year before Hurricane Katrina; it was our 5th anniversary.

We have so many wonderful memories of our long-weekend and want to share this and look forward to the new experiences with all of you. We went to: the French Market, Jackson Square, visited and strolled through the French Quarter, went to Preservation Jazz Hall and experienced an intimate performance, rode the St. Charles streetcar, did a wonderful overview city tour of NOLA through Grey Lines, and even gambled at Harrah's; there was a large marketplace linked to the Hilton too. We ate at: Cafe du Monde, Emeril's and Brennan's and had a famous hurricane at Pat O'Briens.

What we loved about "NOLA" included the food and the people! At Brennan's I had a personal escort to the ladies room if you can believe that!

NOLA will never be the same after our visit!

Oh, Janice, I would love to try Brennan's! Steve also mentioned Emeril's. I think that is Emeril's first location, isn't it?

Grey Lines is the tour company Steve and I used when we went to Mt. Rainier in Washington. We were very, very pleased with the tour and the service.

We will definitely do the town right!

Mary, Brennan's invented the bananas foster which we did have for dessert! It is very close to Pat O'Briens too. The service was stellar as was the hospitality!

Emeril's was in close proximity to the Embassy Suites. However, if you look he has other NOLA restaurants too. I have heard and read a lot about Commander's Palace too.

The thing about the Grey Lines tours is you know what you are getting...however, Chef Peg made a wonderful recommendation which we should also explore.

Corkey Carol, a must for me this trip is a tour (& lunch) at one of the plantations. Oh of course for those who have never been the cemetery tour is so unique. Initially the thought of walking around "dead people" was creepy but the mausoleums are such work of art. Patrick and I also walked through the Audubon Zoo area (after riding the St. Charles Streetcar) and caught a ferry (or sometning) back down the Mississippi back to the Hilton area with the shops. Oh this brings back such special memories except what we did for LUNCH!

We did a plantation tour in Baton Rouge....it was so interesting...I even bought a book that is a novel re: a plantation...forgot if it is fiction or non...I even I had the book til now. A worker at Dow Chemicals from that area gave narce a book that has ghost stories...cuz went several times on business there.

I have heard from several people that the plantation tours are really wonderful. Janice, I remember some of the pics you sent of the cemeteries, the grave markers are very beautiful sculptures, I would love to see them. Carol B. and I would love to go on a ghost tour, Corkey Carol and Janice, are you guys up to that too? So glad we are staying a few days, we will have plenty of time to see many things.

How do you all feel about staying at a hotel in the French Quarter? Is it a little too loud to be restful at nite? I like the Embassy Suites, but I will be watchful on price on the hotel....

Mary, Patrick and I are game for a ghost tour. I think we saw the people lining up (across the street) when we were waiting to get into the Presevation Jazz Hall performance. It looked like a small intimate group that night!

I think Patrick and I went to that store later...I bought some voodoo dolls for souvenirs at the French Market one day and some beautiful slate artwork that I managed to bring home in one piece.

Glad you got the artwork home ok. I purchased some pottery when we were in Cozumel last September...one piece didn't make it home.:(

Steve and I enjoy Jazz, it would be great to fit a Jazz performance in. I know Carol B. and I have discussed a ghost tour, we're both up for that. I'll check out some of the ghost tours on line and see what info I come up with. I think I'll also email Tony and see if he has any recommendations. :)

Hello Dave & Bettie!

A great big WELCOME to you two! We feel blessed that you and Bettie booked and that you are sharing this adventure with all of us! Dave, since you have been to NOLA 3 times you will know more of the in's and out's!

FYI, we took the St. Charles & rode it to the end of the line and I loved the many beautiful homes. I understand that the shopping is great there; antique stores which I love. We got off by Audubon Park and got onto the boat back to the Hilton and the Riverwalk Marketplace. FYI, we cannot remember what kind of boat!

...so many places to see and foods to eat - YUMMO!

Dave, are you referring to the Embassy Suites? Steve and I are also interested in staying there, however, we don't really want to spend $300 per nite. I think Carol and Bob are, too, but I will let her confirm that with you.

I will have to gather some information from my husband to post later. He lived in NOLA for 15 years. I have only briefly visited.
Places to eat: Mother's, Commanders Palace, Dragos (I think that is the name)
The WW2 museum was great if you like that type of stuff.
There is a bar "Cooter Browns" with more beers available than I knew were possible.
Oh, and the "Carousel Bar". I'll have to ask him the name of the hotel it is in.

I think first thing on my list will be to get a hotel, I have really liked Hotwire's results on vacations past....their site is saying rates will be available for our time frame 330 days out. We used them when we went to San Diego and Seattle and were very, very pleased.

We like to go to the places where he or Adam from Man Vs Food has gone = we have gone to about 5 of them in Hawaii already - latest one was here in CA in Walnut Creek (in our area, Janice) to the San Francisco Creamery (an Adam find) - we had sandwiches that were huge that I could only eat half of a half - and then Narce had a huge sundae and I like my ice cream plain - even the one scooper was large so I age 3/4 and hubby ate the rest - the segment that Adam was when he tried to eat their 'everything but the kitchen sink' ice cream special - it's huge --

I will also start shopping for a place to stay - I think we have Hotwire but I will try from other discount places too.... Corkey Carol

We went to one of Guy's places when we were in FLL last month, Grampa's Bakery. Had a great breakfast with some friends that we cruise with on CCL.

I've been checking several of the hotels and keep getting the 330 day limit. We are still more that 330 days out from booking any hotels. You may have better luck calling the hotel direct but they may not be able to book earlier either.

Bettie and I have been to Nawlins 3 times and have eaten just about everywhere. We did have fun at the New Orleans Cooking School. Great cooking class and you get to sample all the dishes.

The paddle wheeler trip was a dinner cruise. Not very far but lots of fun.

I now have to go back to work. I'll check back in later from my BB via Tapatalk.

Has anyone stayed at a Hilton Garden Inn. There is one in the FQ area that has rooms available. I'm thinking about booking a room there before there are none left. We will be coming in on Friday night then staying a few days post cruise.

Thank you for the recommendations! Please ask your DH what he things of the Faubourg Marigny neighborhood. This was recommended to my DH and I when we went to NOLA the year before Katrina.

This morning/afternoon we went to Red Hawk Casino and I came home a winner; ahead by $50. I hated losing a hour of sleep and this change will take weeks to get use to...

It is not actually close to the Greyhound Station, also that is were the Amtrack station is as well.

It is located in the CBD or Central Business District. A few blocks away from the Hilton Garden Inn.

I have not stayed there, but it seems it is popular place for many here on Cruise Critic.

It is not near the French Quarter, walking distance if you like to walk.

Probably so staying at the Drury Inn. I have seen it, looks ok from the outside. As far as Canal Street, we stayed at the Marriott as well as the Sheraton. They are across the street from each other.

Personally, I would try to find something in the French Quarter. We really like the Bourbon Orleans. Do a Google search. I tried to do a reservation, but I guess they are not available for you alls sail date, yet.

Have also stayed at the Prince Conti. A small place, 1 block from Bourbon street. http://www.princecontihotel.com/

Some of the smaller places have some good rates, and are close to "The Action".

Bettie and I are staying until Tuesday and I think Janice is also. I could be wrong. I've booked 3 nights at Homewood post cruise and 1 night pre-cruise at the Hilton Garden Inn. I will also be driving inbut will park my car at a private firm in NOLA.

Renee, there's allot to see and do in Nawlins. We were there last in the late 90s. Loved our visit to the Audubon Aquariunm that is near the French Market. Plus no trip is complete without a visit to Cafe du Monde and to Aunt Sally's Praline Shop.

Janice, I've never stayed at a B&B so don't have any thoughts on it.

Hello Renee!

Patrick and I are excited to explore NOLA again and this time with special friends. I am looking at this as our last trip to this fantastic city since there are so many more places to see on my bucket list. Patrick and I were so fortunate to visit New Orleans the year before Katrina and we loved everything about the city!

As Dave mentioned, Cafe du Monde and Aunt Sally's is great too. However, I so loved riding the St. Charles to the Garden District, going to the Preservation Jazz Hall, our special dinner at Brennan's, the visit to the cemetery, the ride down the Mississippi, etc. This time I would want to include a tour of a plantation home and perhaps a swamp tour. I did manage to drive through the Bayou on the way to Virginia: trip started in California.

Renee, it will be so wonderful sailing with you and Blake again and meeting your family!

Have a great MONDAY everyone!

We will have corned beef and cabbage tomorrow too - making it same old way - boil in broth, add the spices that come with it and adding some of my own - we love cabbage will put in a ton along with potatoes and carrots - we will be Irish manana - then on Sunday we will be Mexican as I will do my chicken enchilada casserole -- today is Non-Meat Fri as we observe Lent... fish. carol

After trying this recipe I have to say it was excellent....wonderful flavor in the corned beef and all the vegetables, and very tender. How was the chicken enchilada casserole, Carol? Sounds like a good recipe! We do Mexican frequently...:)

Howdy from rain soaked Texas,
It's been raining here for the past 5 hours and may rain all night. No more drought here but can return quickly.
I'm staying in tonight and not going to work. Back is giving me trouble. Hope it's better tomorrow.
Janice, a swamp tour. We did a swamp to after our cruise last month in Fort Lauderdale. Was allot of fun.
Hope all is having a great week.

We are staying only one night pre cruise because we are staying 4 nights post cruise.

Steve is asking that Blake check out White Witch Golf Course in Jamaica for a possible foursome with him and Bob Bertin and Rick Schaefer. Bob is already in, Steve will be calling Rick soon, but from what I hear, he is interested. Our excursions are not posted yet, but you can go to any other sailing that goes to Jamaica and and check it out. Steve did it in Sept. and loved it!

Mahalo Miss Aloha Carol for sending that recipe out to my dear friends - now, I really hope it's as good as I am making it sound -- I made it yesterday, finally-- I underestimated and didn't put enough chicken, normally I have LOTS of chicken-- but the sauce is what makes it and hubby didn't complain - his only complaint was -- he ate too dang much.

Mr JJMMx (my way of calling our Jimmy James to save on typing his entire name cuz I make typos when I do) ... I do hope you can come with us on this cruise - it'll be an RCCL ship - will it be a first RCCL ship for you? I also look forward to meeting you -

oh - with the casserole, I made Mexican rice - very simple, nothing in it - just long grain rice, chicken broth and tomato sauce - other Spanish rice dishes are fancy with green peas ( I know JJMMx doesn't like green peas), etc... but not mine. I like it plain.

And before that, Hubby made a steamer pot of baby mussles -- he just added garlic and white wine and that was our appetizer.

If anyone would like to visit me and JJMMx on the What's for Dinner thread, it's under the Floataway Lounge and it's the most fun thread -- talks about my most favorite 4 letter 'F' word---FOOD.

Must confess, as most recipes and the way i cook, I do things different each time... I am now adding a little bit, maybe 3/4 or slightly less of whatever red salsa you have - the kind you dip chips in... I add that to the sauce -- I also use green chile salsa or verde something, small can... and I have been adding two cream of mushroom cans to make more sauce since sometimes I am short on the sauce - but yesterday I was short on the chicken!!!

and Yes Miss Mary - the baby mussles were so good - just buttery and not overwhelming - I have never seen baby ones - the Mister needs to get more and make it again for me!!

Mr JJMMx - you and Miss Charlotte can start RCCL and make your mark - bring all your gang members-- should be a fun cruise - with Janice, Mary, Aloha Carol and their Gang, we should OWN this ship!!

As you know the last "GANG" cruise last month there was 60 in the group, we only knew 40 or so before hand.

The "gang' leader who is also our Travel Agent and good friend has already started 'talkin' about 2013 during Mardi Gras time. Mardi Gras next year is 2/12/2013.

That week schools are closed and many folks , that work, also take off a few days, so it is a popular time to cruise from New Orleans. That time also reflects the higher cruise prices, on all cruise ships leaving from New Orleans, NCL, Royal, and Carnival.

That being said, our TA, is a big time Carnival 'cheerleader',
although she did enjoy our NCL cruise a few years ago.

She refers to me as the assistant cruise director of our 'gang' cruises, because I know a lot of stuff(from Cruise Critic).

She has sent an email about next year doing a cruise from Puetro Rico, Hawaii or a all inclusive in some island. The island all inclusive, with air fare is ONLY $5,500, a couple.

Yea right, that is not gonna happen. Miss Charlotte will not fly, so that is out.

So to end this long story, I will send an email to her about you all's cruise on Royal Caribbean on 2/23/2013, and she what she can come up with.

Mister Dave: We are not stuck on Carnival. Miss Charlotte will not fly, and I don't want to drive far, far, far away to go on a cruise. Because Carnival is in New Orleans, 35 minutes away from home, we cruise out of New Orleans. Royal C., is fairly new to New Orleans. I just wish NCL and Royal would home port here year round, instead of the limited time they are here.

We cruise for the ports of call, not the ship.
Miss Charlotte does not like to plan a cruise 10 months in advance. I will be working on her in my devious ways.

Carol, Bettie loves mussels. When we were in Coz last month we spent the day at Paradise Beach. We went through a couple buckets of Sol and I had nachos and Bettie had cerviche. All of it was good. It's a nice beach with a pool water toys and a place to change. Might be a great place to visit next year.

It's a nice beach with a pool water toys and a place to change. Might be a great place to visit next year.

I've been to Coz so many times that a beach thing is all I want to do there.

Hope everyone has a great day.

Dave

Dave, that reminds me of our beach day at Stone Island...wasn't that fun?

Janice, I've heard the samething about 60 being the new 40 but after working in the yard last weekend, my back was telling me something different.

I wish my work week was over but I'm headed there again in a few minutes. :(

Tomorrow is a big Union rally. Should be interesting. We have a contract expiring next month and the company is over a barrel. If we stick then they may loose some customers, Japan for one, and if they give into our demands then the other units will be PO'd. The main thing going for us is that the F35 is a new program and they don't need anymore delays.

Hope everyone has a great weekend.

Oh Dave, that "U" word is now considered a dirty word in many circles. We had a NUMMI plant close because of the union. There are still so many of the former employees who are unemployed and unfortunately lack transferrable skills who think they should still be making the big bucks.

It is hard to say what the weather will be In Feb. When we went on our 2/19/2012 (last month) the temp in the morning was about 55, at sail away about 65. It is a little windy on the river. Here are a few pictures:

The last 2 weeks it has been hot here, upper 70s to 82 degrees today. Of course, we also had 3 straight days of rain last week.

Closer to your cruise date, I can give you a better estimate.

See you soon,

Steve and I are arriving the day before we sail and staying 4 nights after the cruise. We have booked the Hilton Garden Inn for our one night prior, but we are awaiting more prices to be released, hoping to find an even better price. Nothing booked for after the cruise yet, waiting for those prices.

Janice and Patrick and Bob and Carol are also staying after, and I believe a few others are, too. I just don't know for sure how many days.

We really don't have any tours booked yet, but have discussed a ghost tour, plantation tour, cemetery tour, cruise on the Mississippi, many things have been tossed out there. Carol B. (Pure Carol) suggested maybe a ghost tour for Saturday nite, but nothing booked yet.

Chris, we are not too keen on the itinerary either with the exception of being able to sail out of NOLA and MOST of all we are sailing because of our dear friends!

Hello again to you and Susan! Aren't we due for another Morro Bay outing?

Janice,

Morro Bay, anytime!!!! We might have a better chance at meeting there than depending on RCI not canceling another departure port and cruise (Mariner) out of Los Angeles:mad:. Just by reading entires in this thread, the group sounds like a blast and agree the NOLA departure port makes up for the itinerary. Looking forward to crusing with you and the rest of the NOS gang........

Glad you found us - you know how poorly I give 'directions' - when I tell Narce to turn left, he goes to the right cuz he knows I am always wrong!! ha!ha! anyway, this thread welcomes you as these are the best folks on here -

I also hope Mr. Jimmy James and his lovely Miss Charlotte will be joining us cuz he lives in Slidell LA and he knows all the right places to go to - he can give us all kinds of pointers plus he's a hoot too.

With this gang, we will dominate this ship!

Corkey Carol

Yes, Carol, I can see this group having alot of fun together. You all seem to me to be very friendly, down to earth people.

There are also other friends of ours joining us on this cruise; Fred and Tony, who have been friends of Steve's and mine for 13 years and they are also looking forward to joining us! Tony was raised in St. Bernard's Parrish in New Orleans and worked at the Monteleone Hotel in college. I am sure that he and Mr. Jimmy James can give us lots of great ideas of things to do in NOLA. So, Jimmy, Steve and I are hoping that you and Miss Charlotte will join us, too!:)

We will have to coordinate - it's nice to go to MB during the warm months in our area - so far, July is not a full month - April to June seems to be active for us now. too bad we aren't all retired and we can go on weekdays!!
I know, slap my fingers for just 'typing' that!!
Need to include Char and Jim! Corkey Carol

We're up for the plantation, cemetary, and Ghost tour. Keep us posted!!!

Time to look for a room, another let me know what or where the group is staying...

Chris
Chris, we have Friday night February 22nd booked at the HGI French Qtr and then Sat-Tuesday (checking out then) at the Homewood Suites, I know that Mary, Pure Carol and Dave have booked at the HGI already. We are booked at the Homewood Suites as is Dave/Bettie...Carol and Mary did anymore rooms open up? We really wanted to get into the Embassy Suites but the rates were outrageous or not available.
However, I have not checked lately...

Chris, we are lucky to live here in CA...we can have our ocean, lakes, rivers, mountains and deserts all in the same state. Well dear Corkey is talking about her July being open...perhaps we should try to set a tentative date? Of course, Char and Jim too!

Dave, I was thinking of using Hilton Honors points for some of the stay but of course want to stay somewhere affordable for all too. FYI, what happened with your union event? Email me if you can; wondering?

Enjoy your day at work and a hug for dear Bettie!
