We are booking an Eastern Caribbean Cruise in Jan 2006. We are looking at balcony staterooms on the verandah deck (5th floor) since we heard that the 4th floor can get hot and has noise from the restaurants.

We would like a quiet balcony room, but also in a safe location for someone who may get seasick. Is mid-ship the best? Are the elevators noisy? We are considering category VC, VE or VF.

Any advice would be appreciated.

Why does it get hot? I'm looking at booking the 4th floor. What do I need to know?

That's a new one to me - never heard of the 4th floor getting hot!

If you are prone to seasickness, mid-ship is best and no the elevators are not noisy.

We were in 5092 (4 cabins forward of the elevator on the port side) on our cruise on the Westerdam in January.

DW was having quite a bit of trouble walking in her heels around the ship due to piching and rolling on the first formal night. The floor seemed to move much less towards the middle of the ship and we had no issues moving around the cabin.

I haven't heard of any issues with A/C on the 4th deck. The lower you go on the ship the less motion also, but the lifeboats are in front of the ouside midships cabins on the 4th deck.

Stanford's girl: We have seen previous postings about people saying that the 4th floor was above the restaurants and tended to be hot and/or noisy because of that. We have never been on a cruise so we have absolutely no personal knowledge of that happening. We are new to this and prone to motion sickness and are light sleepers, that's why we asked.

Geomew-always book a cabin with cabins above you and below you..never book a cabin above or below or next to a public place, like a restaurant or lounge,or promenade deck IF YOU WANT quiet!!! I am a light sleeper and ALWAYS (due to several bad experiences) book a cabin by quietness-no elevators, bars, kitchens, etc. near me.I just got off RCI's Adventure Of The Seas on Sunday and we had an aft cabin on deck 10..very very quiet.Of course, your neighbors play a role as well. But most people who will stay out late and party prefer being closer to the stairs, elevators, bars, etc.I am more concerned with noise than I am with motion, but if motion is more important to you, book midship, and BELOW the public places.......the higher up you go,the more motion you feel.

Just a note about seasickness...

I am extremely prone to motion sickness. I took a (24-hour, non-drowsy) Bonine tablet every night before going to bed, and had absolutely no problem at all.

(Bonine is available at drug stores. I bought mine at Walgreen's.)

I wish you a wonderful cruise!

We were in cabin 5088 on our recent Westerdam cruise. It is a few cabins in from the elevators. It was comfortable, quiet and we experienced relatively little motion even in rough seas in this cabin.

There is a picture of the cabin included in one of the albums from that cruise that I posted on Webshots:

So you can see what it looks like.

We had 5139 on the Westerdam. It is just forward of the rear elevators. No noticeable motion of the ocean. Just gentle movement that made sleeping wonderful. No noise from any direction.

We were in 5024 and 5026 which is at the front of the ship. While we hit some very stormy weather, the movement was not a big issue (and I have gotten motion sickness on two of six cruises). We always try for mid ship, lower down to limit the motion. A significant number of ships have their best suites mid ship, and about half way up.

Avoid the very first cabins on the 4th floor as the balcony does not have a clear, see through panel - you will be looking into the steel side of the ship.

verandah deck (5) mid ship is a great location. There are no mid ship verandah cabins on deck 4 so if sea sickness is a consideration I would go with 5.
