We've made a reservation for renting an automatic compact sized car in Villefranche through Hertz. I couldn't believe the cost - 114 Euros for the day! (which is about $135 for a day's rental - I've gotten car rentals for this rate but for a WEEK). That's not even including gas...
Has anyone rented for less for an automatic car in Villefranche? Don't know if it's worth it considering that there are only 2 of us, and trains will be cheaper. Plus with us being in port on a Saturday in July, the roads could be very busy.

An automatic car cost more money in Europe first off,and the euro vs the dollar is second. If there are just the two of you I would do the train because third would be the traffic on a Saturday as well as the price of gas. It is easy to use the train in the area and you can then spend the money you save on some of the great tablecloths, lavendar, ceramic's etc.No matter what you do..have a great cruise. These are just my thought's.

Just returned from Germany last week on a 10 day land tour. We had a rental car for 9 days. Now I really hate to tell you what we paid. We got a Mercades 220 Automatic that ran on desel. The cost for 9 days came out to $284 Euros or $346 dollars. The car even came with a GPS system. If I were you I think I would try to do alittle more shopping. Maybe the local train system is the way to go. Tim

That's about right. I think they were renting for 140 Euro when we got off the Silver Whisper for the day. That was a mid sized (what we would call compact) stick shift. The train is your best bet. You can catch it right in Villefranche and take it to Monte Carol or to Nice or for that matter Eze. Very efficient and the cost is low. Plus the traffic is horrendous on the Cote d' Azur.
BTW, it cost me 165 Euro from Hertz in Perpignan, France for one day and that was the lowest in town and that was just last month. In Livorno it cost us 130 Euro for the day.

This is an interesting thread on getting around in Villefranche (in particular posts #6 & 8): http://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=188794&page=1&pp=25.

Has anyone rented a car from Avis in Beaulieu Sur Mer's Railway Station? I was able to get a midsize car for 97.98E for pick up at 8:30 am and drop off at 9:00 pm. However, what is the best way to get to the railway station in Beaulieu? Does Avis offer a pick-up/drop-off at Villafranche for an extra charge like Hertz? Or, should we - a party of 4 take the train from Villafranche to Beaulieu? Or should we take a taxi from Villafranche to Beaulieu? Also, if we pick up the car at the railway station at 8:30 am - is this is enough time to drive to La Turbie and make our 9:30 am golf tee time? With the 9:00 pm return time, are there taxis or will the train still be running at that time to get back to Villafranche?
Thanks! We're looking forward to our cruise in October!:D

Be extremely careful when renting a car in France. they are marked with a special decal as rental cars; the theives can readily identify such cars and target them in parking areas. Leave NOTHING in them when you park.

Meanwhile I found a car-rental in Villefranche-sur-mer for my NORWEGIAN GEM-tour in October 2007. So no experience. Try yourself!

I would echo one of the previous posts. We often rent cars in Europe and never, ever reserve an automatic transmission. It is common to pay $40 - $60more per day for an automatic (sorry if you can't drive a stick). 114 Euros is a fair price for an automatic.

Since my posting on June 14, 2005 I have been to Nice in May 2006 and there has been some thing to think about. First of all the dollar has plunged even more. That means the rental car prices are even higher. That price quote of $114 dollars a day...does that included insurance? As I recall if you have to purchase insurance on a rental car in Europe the price is almost the same price as renting the car for a day. Gee that ship sponsored tour is starting to look pretty good now. I think I would try riding the trains. Its easy to get over to Monico or Nice. Don't forget you can stop off at "Eze" on your way to Monico by way of train. Tim
