View Full Version : 4-5 Day Cruises Out Of Galveston

Woodywoman

It appears from the 2004-2005 itinerary reference guide that Splendour will end its cruises from Galveston in April 2004 and is listed to cruise out of Tampa in 2005. I do not see where RCI is replacing Splendour for the 4-5 night cruises.

How many people are going to miss these cruises? Let's show RCI how much we like them.
Please select the best fit for you.
Thanks!! BTW, My selection is #2.

Woodywoman,

First of all, thank you for your wonderful review of your recent Splendour trip. (Cruisebuggie). We remain interested in 5 day cruises by RCI out of Galveston. However, as we have cruised MULTIPLE times to the SAME ports out of Galveston, possibly, there are those of us interested, with at least ONE new port.

Thanks,

Bookit

Thanks Bookit! Even though we have cruised to Cozumel about 5 times and Costa Maya twice, we would go again, if a ship was available.

What does everyone think about this? Galveston to New Orleans to Cozumel to Galveston OR Galveston to Progreso to Cozumel to Galveston?

I haven't actually cruised from Galveston but I've looked at them and figured I would someday. Galveston is reasonably easy for us to get to and I can sometimes sneak in one of those 4 or 5 day cruises. Plus, they seemed to be reasonably economical.

We would opt for Progreso (been there once) -- there are some (for us) interesting Mayan ruins near there, and on our cruise about 2 years ago, passengers seemed to enjoy shopping in Progreso. Plus, the capital of Merida has some beautiful Spanish colonial architecture. Wonder why none of the cruiseships go to Veracruz? Think they used to -- a Carnival ship was diverted there (weather) a few years ago. The story we heard was that practically the whole town turned out to welcome the ship to port!

I loved cruising out of Galveston.
Woodywoman, as you know we were on the same sailing as you. I would do the exact same trip a million times. We are planning on taking the kids (15 & 17) next time and really want to do it from Galveston.
I don't understand why RCI would stop cruising from there.
We really enjoyed Costa Maya even more than Cozumel so I hope they keep going there

I don't think RCI will pull out of Galveston totally. The Rhaposdy had a 5 year contract, they are still bringing a Celebrity in,and we all believe the rumors that once the "Ultra" comes out in 2006,it will bump something to Galveston. My guess is there is a limit to how many ships Galveston can handle, and with contracts to Rhapsody,Elation, Grand Princess,Galaxy, and the Ecstacy, they are probably at their max.

The problem I see is that it appears the cruise lines we sail on are only doing 7 day cruises out of Galveston (RCI and Princess). I really like the 4 and 5 day ones to hold me over until a 7 day. I'm not spoiled or anything! Also, most first time cruisers will try a 4-5 day before doing a 7 day. I think RCI is missing the "boat".

Ditto WoodyWoman!!!! I too like to sneak in a quick 5 day cruise out of Galveston once a year to tide me over til my 7 day cruise. If RCL doesn't continue the 4/5 day cruises, they ARE missing the boat! It's money they are handing over to Carnival. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_frown.gif

I just got off the Splendour over Easter. I was not sure I would like a 4 day cruise after 7 and 12 nighters. BUT WAS I WRONG. It was a blast. Would do it again in a heartbeat. They need to figure out how to do some more of those.

We were on the Splendour from April 3 - 8 and it was the perfect length cruise for us! There was lots for all of us to do (me, DH, and two teenage kids) but we were ready to leave after 5 nights. It was also great because it fit perfectly into a week's Spring Break schedule, leaving us time to have a couple of days with the Texas relatives before heading back north. We may not cruise again for a few years, but we'd definitely like to do it out of Galveston again!

I'd be interested in a five-day cruise out of Galveston on RCI. Not so much on Carnival. Our daughter is grown and we don't party the way we once did, so a relaxing and even elegant cruise is more interesting to us than a boozy conga line around the pool. We sailed on Rhapsody from Galveston last year and loved it. Let's hope RCI and Celebrity keep ships in Galveston for years to come!

Safe travels,

in response to your question about how full the ship was, I was on Splendour for the 4/3 sailing and we were 50 people short of being full (2,026 passengers!)

Hi Everyone.
I've sailed out of Galveston all 3 cruises. It's a 5 hour drive from home, but it's worth every mile to cruise. I hope they leave at least one 4 or 5 day cruise from RCCL. I'm looking at next summer's cruise, but can't find one on RCCL. The shorter cruises work well for us as we can't leave our business for too long.

I don't have answers to what is in store for us in 2005 and why there are no 4-5 day cruises next summer. One thing I see is that a remodeled pier (or new) will be completed in Galveston. Does RCI own that pier/land and/or building? If so, do they plan on using it only for 7 day cruises? I may need to e-mail RCI!

On the Ectasy vs. Elation question, you might be better to post on Carnival board.

I was with Aussie Girl on the Spendour on April 3 and agree 100%. When you have only one week for spring break, Christmas, or work vacation, getting to see relatives on land is a great plus.

We need more drive-to ports that are not in Florida. It's obvious that RCCL knows that many Galveston passengers are driving since it has the ship leave so late at 6 pm - about 3 hours later than Florida. Also, for us in the Midwest, Florida ports are always more expensive on air fare. Houston and New Orleans can cut our air fare by at least 50%.

Does anyone have reliable info in whether RCCL is stopping all cruises out of Galveston? Temporary or permanent?

I loved the 4 night cruise! I am going to send my secretary on a cruise and it looks like it's going to be the Carnival cruise since Splendour won't be in Galveston. She's never cruised before and I think everybody needs to try it! I hope RCL replaces Splendour because I would do at least 2 four night cruises and a 7 night cruise from Galveston... Different ports would be great, but not having to fly is imPORTant too!! I can never get tired of the days at sea, and I love Coz!!

Friday I booked my third cruise on Rhapsody for Jan2,2005, so they are sailing out then. Almost booked with the Grand Princess, I liked the itinerary better,we went to Costa Maya on the Splendour in Jan. on Panama Canal cruise, I loved it!! But we are taking my 2 college age children and friends so sailing out on Jan 2 was better for them than the Jan 8 on the Princess.

Here is your chance to help out! Do you want a ship in Galveston for a 4-5 day cruise?

Write to RCI at 1050 Caribbean Way, Miami, FL 33132 ATTN: Revenue Dept. Ask them why RCI isn't placing a ship in Galveston for the 4-5 day cruises. Express your interest in getting one there. BTW, Celebrity (owned by RCI) has a ship sailing out of Galveston next Spring. However, the benefits are not transferable.

I also found out that the pier in Galveston is owned by the City and not by RCI.

I would like to see more 4/5 day cruises, but I'll be fine on Ecstasy. They are supposedly building a 3rd terminal that would also be able to handle a Voyager-class, but there appears to be plenty of space on the schedule right now for short cruises.

I think we'll be wishing for more 7-day cruises soon enough. Princess or Celebrity would be fine to cruise on, but I'm not ready for another 12 day too soon.

I do have to wonder if RCCL is doing a pricing experiment. Prices are good in Galveston, but seem to be a bit higher than Florida. I'm sure I've never seen a $189 4-day cruise here, anyway. Another ship would probably mean lower profit PP, so maybe no greater profit overall...

Hey guys, thanks for the information. I must check out the 5 day on October 31st. That one I definately interested in.

Mike, I haven't seen the $189 4 day cruise either. Ummm, they may need to sharpen their pencils.

Please send those letters to RCI about the 4-5 day cruises coming back to Galveston! Even the RCI rep from Kansas said she would be interested in those.

Woody,

You may want to rethink that OCt 31st thing.
That is the sailing before she goes into dry dock.
Now while I doubt it would be an issue on our beloved Rhapsody, there is a thread (top of page right now) about someone on a sailing prior to dry dock, and them starting to tear things apart, while they were on board...

JUst a heads up.

Thanks Brn2crz,

We were on the last cruise on the Monarch out of Florida before it went to dry dock and on to the west coast. Yes there were some items removed or under construction, but it didn't bother us and we had a great time.

I don't like the schedule for this Rhapsody trip - October 31-November 5 (Sun - Fri). We decided no more 5 day trips Mon-Fri. From now on it would be either 7 day or a Thurs - Mon.
Also, it appears that most rooms have been booked on this cruise according to RCI website.

Again thanks,
Nancy

Is the Rhapsody(5 day) doing the old Splendour itinerary--Cozumel and Costa Maya?

Is HAL doing a 4-5 day? We've never been on a HAL ship. I might need to look at that thread.
I keep reading that it is an "older" crowd. How old is older? Maybe I've hit that "magic" number? http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_eek.gif
I know Celebrity is doing a short cruise out of Galveston, but as of today, their benefits and RCI are not transferable.

I would think that if HAL came to Galveston that they would do 7 day cruises. I would be curious as to what their itinerary would be! I'm trying Princess out in November. It would be nice to try out HAL as well. Galveston is giving me a lot of opportunities to try new things out. I love it! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif

I also think HAL wuold do at least 7 days. The older crowd tends to gravitate towards the longer cruises, since they don't have to worry about limited vacation time and such.

The crowd on Splendour 12-day was fairly old too, but it was nice since the bar areas weren't excessively crowded at night. Of course, that would only apply if HAL has things going on after 9PM http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_wink.gif.

I don't think there is a magic number though... it is just a more mellow crowd. At least on Splendour, they were definitely 'active seniors'... just not a party crowd.

They are talking about the Statendam on the HAL board, but I can not find where it is for real. The HAL.com site is inconsistant. It shows that ship on a Hawaii run in Dec of 2005 and yet the yearly calander shows it in the Caribbean. Any one know for sure?

I wrestled with reality for years, Doctor, and I'm happy to state, I finally won out over it. (Harvey 1950)

Was that High School Reunion? I haven't been watching (except for the episode where they supposedly went skinny dipping... they need to read up on that http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif)... but anyway, I went to High School in Michigan. No reality shows from there yet!

Hey Birman - You'll like the Grand. The only think I found was it was difficult to get to certain places.

Klingoncruiser - I went to the HAL board and read the posts. I even tried the HAL.com site. Do they have a phone number to ask about the 4-5 day cruises (I may have missed it)? I thought HAL only ran 7 day cruises?

BTW - How old is old? I'm just wondering if I hit old yet?

I gathered that the cruise would be a longer cruise. Say 10-12 days and include Panama. Let me ask the ppl on the HAL board. I would love to try HAL. But it is not worh going to Florida for. I would NEVER take one in Alaska. They really do cater to the OLD and OLDER crowd there. I am not ready for that yet.
