Has anyone ever sailed RCCL to Alaska? If so, I need your help. We are going to be celebrating our 25th wedding anniversary next year and we have decided to take a cruise to Alaska. The question is, which ship and itinerary. We are looking at the Vancouver-Inside Passage-Juneau-Skagway-Hubbard Glacier-Ketchikan-Inside Passage-Vancouver itinerary. I believe the Radiance of the Sea is the ship. I welcome comments for all Alaska sailing ships.

If you sailed the above itinerary, did you enjoy your trip? Were there any ports you were disappointed with? How did you like the RCCL experience? What are your dining options? I know there are a lot of questions. However, this is a special time for us and we want it to be a memorable trip.

Thank you so much in advance for your responses.

italy...i know you asked for people who have sailed RCI to alaska, and unfortunately i haven't done RCI to alaska, but I wanted to throw my $0.02 in about Alask in general. i've done the itinerary you mentioned above twice with HAL. the only difference in the itinerary is that we did Glacier Bay National Park (highlight is Marjerie Glacier) rather than Hubbard Glacier that RCI does... and I must say that ALASKA is amazing. There's nothing in the world that you've ever experienced that is like Alaska. Though I've been twice already, I am looking to go a third time next year. I truly beleive that you could go to Alaska 20 times and still never get enough of the wonder and sheer beauty of Alaska. The ports that you'll be stopping at are all great. My favorite might have to be Skagway. Its this great little small town of about 2,000 summer residents, 700 year round residents. But there really are no bad ports in Alaska. They are all just unique and gorgeous in their own ways!

also from what I understand Radiance is probably be best ship to be on visiting Alaska because of all the glass!

regardless of what ship and itinerary you do, just go! Alaska is a trip you'll remember the rest of your life! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

jstducky thanks for your comments. I have heard many comments that one couldn't do Alaska without a trip to Glacier Bay. If Hubbard Glacier is just as good, I am fine with that. Any comments about one Glacier vs. the other? Again, thanks for your help, it is truly appreciated. I think I will also check into HAL.

BTW, noticed you are sailing HAL's Zuiderdam in August. We did that ship last May and really enjoyed it very much. Especially enjoyed the wonderful variety of food at the buffet.

italy52 --- how's the weather down there in chula vista? its HOT HOT HOT up here in West LA!

anyhow, i can't really speak about Hubbard Glacier as i've never seen it for myself. i have seen pictures of the glacier online and i beleive that it is larger than marjerie glacier which is the highlight of HAL's stop at Glacier Bay. from what I understand, RCI can get pretty close to Hubbard Glacier, within 1/8 of a mile or so if the weather is good and ice conditions permit. from pictures it looks gorgeous. i think that if i end up doing an alaskan cruise again next year, i will do it with RCI just for a different experience...

but with HAL, they are one of the few ships that regularly calls to Glacier Bay National Park. the park service only allows a certain number of ships to enter the Park on a daily basis. upon entering the park, a park ranger will board the ship, and throughout the day the park ranger gives on board presentations as to the glacier formations as well as to the wildlife you may be seeing. also the park ranger will get on the ship intercom and narrate at parts during the day. the highlight of glacier bay is a 1-2 hour stop at marjerie glacier, which is one of the most active glaciers at glacier bay. on most days it does a lot of calving, and that is a sight to be hold. marjerie glacier is actually right next to what is known is the grand pacific glacier, which i beleive is one of the biggest glaciers in southeast alaska. however, when you go to glacier bay no body talks about the grand pacific because 1) you can hardly tell its there, it has carried so much dirt and rock down the mountain as it has advanced that it really looks like a dirt covered hill, when in reality it is a HUGE glacier, you just can't see beyond the black dirt/sand, so most people go to glacier bay and admire marjerie glacier and never really realize that the grand pacific is right there, and 2) its not a very active glacier, it hardly calves at all and since marjerie calves all the time, thats the one everyone pays attention too...

also while in glacier bay the boat will take you past john hopkins inlet. i beleive that the john hopkins glacier, which is situated inside an inlet is the most active of the glaciers in glacier bay, however, large cruise ships are prohibited from entering the inlet as it is a protected area for harbor seals to give birth to their pups and raise them there. its gorgeous to look at though, even from a distance, and you can just tell how active it is because the inlet itself is filled with thousands of icebergs. and you can also sometimes see how active it is because you'll be able to see and hear from a distance the calving!

so thats the 411 on glacier bay national park.

also, if you should happen to have the time and are willing to spend the money, you might want to consider a one way trip in alaska rather than a roundtrip. if you have time you should add a land tour through denali national park as part of your vacation. also if you do the one way on HAL and i beleive other cruise lines do this as well, you will most likely pass through college fjord where you'll see a bunch of other glaciers all named after colleges!

ok, so i think i've rambled on enough! i think you can tell that i absolutely LOVE alaska! whatever you and your husbad decide you'll definitely be glad you went and i assure you that you'll both fall in love with alaska. it'll be a great way to spend your anniversary together!

lastly, i am looking forward to the zuiderdam. never done the caribbean before and to boot this cruise was free as i won it through free cruise lottery on the zaandam in alaska last year! http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_biggrin.gif

Italy52, we sailed that very itinerary on the Radiance. What a perfect ship for an Alaska cruise. I highly reccomend it.

Hello Italy52, we have sailed the Radiance twice to Alaska and loved it both times. The itinerary is wonderful, and it is a great ship to be on. The two times we have been we were not able to see the Hubbard Glacier - in June due to fog and in September due to bad weather. The Radiance is probably one of the better ships to be on for it due to all the glass. If you like shopping Ketchikan is the place. Have fun and enjoy!

Italy: We went on Legend of the Seas two years ago. Loved it!!! We started in Vancouver and ended in Seward and then took a train into Anchorage. Had about 6 hours to kill in Anchorage and enjoyed every minute of it.

We came so close to the glacier while at Hubbard glacier. It was amazing! Beautiful! Can't say enough about it. We traveled the last week of August and have to say it was 53 degrees and raining every day, but just go prepared and it will be fine. Even the rain didn't dampen my spirits and love of Alaska. I'll do it again sometime in the future.

We went to Ketchikan, Skagway, Juneau and Sitka. (loved everyone except Sitka..) Go and enjoy!!

We did the Radiance inside passage. That trip is on an equal footing with Hawaii as the best trips I have ever been on. We took a helicopter to land on a glacier and that was outstanding. We did the Whitepass Train up/ busride down trip in Skagway also a great excursion. Radiance is a wonderful ship, so many places to watch the beautiful sights.

Having been to all 3 glaciers now sailed on Alaska cruises, my preference is Glacier Bay. ANY glacier is spectacular however and NO guarantees how close you will get. Glacier Bay has several glaciers viewable so you are every likely to get fairly close to at least one. The Hopkins glacier is sailed up to in Sept. when they open the inlet but as mentioned it is viewable anyway from the mouth of the inlet 5 miles away. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif Look at several factors- ports, time in ports, route, glacier, price. Budget Fully for tours- you get only half a trip without them. AND lastly - correct- after 17 trips I still have a LOT of Alaska to see. http://messages.cruisecritic.com/infopop/emoticons/icon_smile.gif So in one- do what stikes your interest.

Italy...Our very first cruise was to Alaska on the Legend in August 2002, and it was FABULOUS..! We've become hooked on cruising as a result. We did the cruise-tour package with RCL, and you might consider that also. It is a 7-day cruise and then a 4-day in-country bus/train excursion. We embarked at Vancouver, did inside passage with daily stops and debarked at Seward. Train trip included stop at Denali National Park, and ended at Fairbanks, and flew home from there. We had great weather except for the day in Juneau, when it rained. We did not get to see Hubbard Glacier due to fog, and had to skip Skagway due to 70 MPH winds which prevented the ship from docking.
I concur that the shore excursions are a must to better enjoy the Alaska experience.

And CruisingFool, we LOVED Sitka..! It was sunny & warm the day we were there, and we hiked over to the college campus, watched the salmon swimming in a very pretty stream on the grounds, and also hiked up to a small but very beautiful National Cemetary nearby. Shopping was good also (DW found a quilt shop in town, and that made HER day..!).

The Legend is an excellent ship, a little older in its class, but beautifully maintained. We had an inside cabin, but were so awe-struck by everything else on the ship, that we spent almost no time there, except to shower and sleep.

But whatever the ship or itinery, it will be a fantastic cruise..! Enjoy..!

I too am planning an Alaskan cruise for next year. A couple of questions for you if you don't mind.
What is the best month to go? We are planning on the last week in June. What is the average temperature at that time of year? How many hours fo daylight are there? We will be traveling with 3 families. The kids range in age from 12 - 16. Will there be enough to keep them busy and are there many other families that do this cruise? Thanks in advance for your input.

We have been twice, once in July Northbound on Mercury (X) and once in May Southbound again on Mercury. We loved both times. Living in the south we appreciated the train ride from Anchorage to Seward. Lost of snow through the mountains as well as wild life!! July we had a closer view of Hubbard Glacier. Both we enjoyable; however, May was our favorite!!

MANY, MANY THANKS to everyone that provided me with valuable input and pictures of your Alaskan memories. I truly appreciate your kindness. DH came home last night and said we needed to decide on our cruise now because he has to submit vacation plans soon. That being the main motivator, last night we booked the Radiance of the Sea for August 20, 2005. I was amazed how fast the balcony cabins were going for a 2005 cruise. Our cabin changed twice in the course of our RCCL on-line booking. We are very excited, it has been a while since we were on RCCL. Until our date arrives, we look forward to reading the many wonderful posts, and viewing all the beautiful pictures of Alaska that people are kind enought to share.

We went that week last year (Aniversary is 6/24). We're going 7/11-18 this year, my b'day is the 13th, Dad's is 16th (He's turning 80).

quote:
What is the average temperature at that time of year?

If I remember the coldest was in the low 30s, which was BRISK on deck when we were moving. Got up into the 70s when the sun was out, no smog up there to filter it.

June 21 (22?) is the longest day of the year, so about 18 or so hours of daylight. Less before and after 6/21.
