We will sailing on the EOS May, 9th to Belize, Costa Maya, Cozumel, and Grand Cayman. Has anyone that has visited those ports recently had any problems with sea lice?

We are thinking of buying that Safe Sea lotion that is supposed to protect you against them.

Thanks,
Chris

We were in Cozumel 4/24 and saw the thimble jelly fish while we were snorkling.

We were in Cozumel on 4/14 and there was tons of thimble jellies because the high winds blew them in from the Channel between the main land and the island. The bar manager at Paradise Beach said they normally don't come around except for the high winds and they only bother about 30% of the people. I, however, didn't take any chances and stayed out of the water. I don't know what sea lice are but I didn't see anything other than the jellies.

What is sea lice. When I was in the Bahamas last year I was bite/stung by something that felt like a pin point but within minutes I had trails of red line marks around my arm. It lasted a couple of hours and then slowly disappeared. Anyone hazard a guess?

We just returned today from our Grandeur of the Seas cruise and we experienced no problems with thimble jellyfish or sea lice (their larva). We visited Grand Cayman, Cozumel, and Costa Maya and did not encounter any problems with the critters at any of the ports. Enjoy your cruise and don't worry ahead of time about jellyfish.

Heard there were some found on one of the RCI ships last month, but they hushed it up.

We had those in Hawaii last year and I got stung a few times. They don't hurt at all and I had no problems. However, we were told my our crew that if you are allergic to bee stings, you should not take a chance with them.

We were in Belize at the barrier reef in April 2005 and they were there but we did not see any in Cozumel or GC or Costa Maya.... we did use Sea Safe in Belize and no one was bothered and everyone was hosed off with water after snorkeling. Do a search on Sea Safe it is a sun screen with an additive that repels the sea lice as well as thimbles.

Paddy...

You were stung by a jelly fish. Those stripes on your skin were made by its tentacles.

We have sea lice from time to time in our waters here in Fort. Lauderdale. My daughter is one of those people who ALWAYS gets the rash if it's in the water--some people don't. We all swim and she gets it and DH and I never do.
On our first cruise she asked if she could get sea lice from the salt water on the ship and we assured her she couldn't. Well she did. This was the only time this ever happened but I am one of those people who would rather have fresh water for that reason.

During our snorkel excursion in Cozumel three weeks ago, we did run into groups of small jellyfish. They did sting for a second if they touched you and several snorklers freaked out and returned to the boat. The stings were like a mosquito bite and left no marks, but still took away some of the fun of snorkling.

BTW, the snorkling in Cozumel was not very good after the devastation. Very little sea life to see and not very exciting.

I have never heard of sea lice. Can someone please discribe what it looks like or what type and size of rash it causes. Where do you buy the lotion to repel it? Does anyone know if the Explorer of the Seas pools are fresh water or salt.
